Joseph Rocque was born about 1811 at Prairie du Chien, Northwest Territory [now Wisconsin]. He was baptized 5 May 1817, age 6, at Prairie du Chien as Francois. He married Madaline Robinson 15 Jun 1837 at Prairie du Chien. [more on Madaline to follow].
Joseph's father was Augustin Rocque (1787-1856) and his mother was Angelique a Fox/Dakota woman. They were married 1806 in Prairie du Chien.
Augustin's father was Joseph Rocque (1746-1817) and his mother was La Bleu a Mdewakanton woman, the daughter of old Wabasha (aka Wapahasha I) He was born in Varennes, Canada
Joseph Rocque (1746-1817) and his son Augustin Rocque (1787-1856) were the earliest settlers at the lower end of Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River. Both also served as scouts/interrupters for the British. They trapped and traded in what are now the Minnesota counties of Winona and Wabasha and the Wisconsin counties of Buffalo and Trempealeau.
Joseph Rocque (1811-1875) lived most of his life in Wabasha, Minnesota. He and his wife Madaline donated land to the St. Felix Church which is known as the Rocque Addition and part of the St. Felix Cemetery. This Joseph and a few other early Wabash residents floated logs down from Mendota to be used for the first catholic chapel in Wabasha, Minnesota.

Madaline Robinson (1810-1904) married Joseph Rocque (1811-1875) on 15 Jun 1837. Information that I have collected on Madaline follows:
[AKA] Given names: Madaline, Madeleine, Madeline, Adeline, Magdalena Maiden surnames: Robinson, Roberson Married surnames: Roc, Roque, Rock - - - - - - - - - -
[BURIAL] Madaline Robinson Rocque is buried in the St. Felix Cemetery, Wabasha, MN next to her daughter Josephine Rocque Ebersold. The inscription on her tombstone reads: Magdalena Rocque, 1810-1904, She was a kind and affectionate wife, A fond mother, and friend to all
- - - - - - - - - -
[OBITUARY] WABASHA HERALD Wabasha, Minnesota, Thursday, April 21, 1904
Mrs. Joseph Rocque, relict of the late Joseph Rocque, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Ebersold, of Buffalo County, Wisconsin, on Wednesday. The remains were brought here from Alma on Saturday. The funeral occured from St. Felix church, Father Wurst officiating. The interment was in St. Felix Cemetery.
Deceased's maiden name was Robinson. She was born in what is now St. Paul, Minn., in 1810, her father being a Frenchman and her mother a Sioux of Little Crow's band of Indians.
She came to Wabasha previous to 1838 and lived here, up to the death of her husband a few years ago.
She was a good Christian woman and in the early days she and her husband took a very active part in the up building of the St. Felix Catholic parish. In the early days when most of the people in the parish were poor and the little church here struggling for an existence, the Rocques often came to its support in a financial way. It was Joseph Rocque and the subject of this sketch that gave, free of charge, to the St. Felix church the old portion of the present St. Felix Cemetery upon the one condition that himself and wife be furnished a lot free of charge in which they might repose when death released them.
Ninety-four is a good, round old age to live. It has been a history making epoch and a pity it is that the valuable experiences, through which this aged lady has passed and the events of which she had a personal knowledge, could not have been written.

hermin1: In another thread [Joseph Jack Frazer? Fraizer?] you mention Dennis Robinson was of Scotch-Irish descent: My records show that Joseph Rocque married madeleine Robinson, daughter of Dennis robinson of Scotch -Irish descent and a full blood Mdewakanton sioux woman. madeleine's brother was thomas robinson, the husband of Wagiwin/Mary Jane Wakute. In her obituary it says "her father [was] a Frenchman" so I'm confused on the European ancestry. - - - - - In footnote 11, page 216 "THROUGH DAKOTA EYES," it states "Thomas Robinson was the son of Dennis Robinson and a Mdewakanton woman. He was born in about 1826. In 1856 he was living at Wabasha and was married to a daughter of Wakute." There was no mention of Thomas' or Dennis' European ancestry. Other references to Thomas Robinson in the book get confusing "The Robertson boys [Thomas A. Robertson and Thomas Robinson] page 173. Other pages in the index for Thomas Robinson are actually for Thomas Robertson. In Taopi's Statement he mentions "two young men, Thomas Robertson and Thomas Robinson, who carried the letter to General Sibley, out be be rewarded." In Gabriel Renville's Memoir pp.273 it lists a Sibley's scouts. one of which is Thomas Robinson. But I think I can make a reasonable assumption that this Thomas Robinson, son of Dennis Robinson and a Mdewakanton woman is a brother to Madaline Robinson Rocque so I'll keep looking for other sources. In some other writing, I'm almost positive that I found mention of Dennis Robinson being a mixed-blood [French/Dakota]. I'll keep looking for that paper.

Mad Rock: thanks so much for the addtional information you found. Thomas Robertson was the son of Jane Anderson and Andrew Robertson, who was aScottish trader up around the Minnesota.thmas tooo was a scout for the Army. There was a trader named Thomas Robinson(not the son of Dennis and the Dakota/fox woman) mentioned in the literature re. Minnesota history. he married a Mdewakanton or Dakota woman and they had a daughter.

madRock: At one of my haunts,Metis-Gen I found a GED-COM for Joseph Rocque. it mentions that he baptized his children at Mackinac Michigan According to the GEDCOM, Augustine,SR. was married to Agatha, a 1/2fox,1/2 Dakota .they were married officially 17 APr. on the Minnesota river"Officially"/ his second wife was Helene a 1/2 fox,1/2 Dakota woman, whom he wed after 1850. What was the year of the 17 April marriage? I believe (but could be wrong) that the gedcom mixes the data of two of Joseph Rocque's children. What follows is from "The Origins of the Roc/Rock Family of Prairie du Chien and Wabasha" Frontier Genealogy Among The Voyageurs, THE GENEALOGIST Spring 1997 Volume 11, No. 1 that was written by James L. Hansen, F.A.S.G.: Joseph Rocque, b. ca. 1785, bp. (as Augustin Joseph) 19 May 1798, age 13, at St. Charles Mo., (Parish records of St. Charles, MO) and died in the fall of 1835 at his trading post at Little Rock on the Minnesota River. (Sibley's papers). Based on the birthdates of his children he was probably married twice, most likely to Indian or mixed-blood women, but not of Sioux blood. (Mixed-blood script affidavit's 1855) Augustin Roc, b. Jan 1787, bp. 8 Aug 1787 at Michilimackinac. Augustin only had one wife, Angelique. But as you will see in my next reply, the 1850 census records her as Agatha. I wish I could view your ged-com file.

The pdf image link is a "snapshot" of page 4 of the 1850 federal census of District No.1, County of Wabashaw, Territory of Minnesota. It is an unusual enumeration of Augustin, his wife Angelic (written as Agatha), his son Jean Baptiste LaFramboise (written as Baptiste), and his granddaughter Pauline (by daughter Therese). The four of them appear in two households. Why this happened is unknown with many possibilities. Was Agatha(Angelic) at her son's abode when the enumertor visited? Was there marital difficulties? Whatever the reason does not matter. The four Rocques are identified and sorted out below: - - - - - Regarding lines 21 and 22 of the "snapshot" image: The 25 year old male, Baptiste Rocque, enumerated as head of household 34, family 34 on the 1850 United States Federal Census for District No. 1 in the County of Wabashaw Territory of Minnesota is determined to be Jean Baptiste LaFramboise Rocque who was born in February 1828 at Dubuque, baptised 31 May 1829 at Prairie du Chien according to "The Origins of the Roc/Rock Family of Prairie du Chien and Wabasha" Frontier Genealogy Among The Voyageurs, THE GENEALOGIST Spring 1997 Volume 11, No. 1 that was written by James L. Hansen, F.A.S.G. Mr. Hansen is the Reference Librarian and Genealogical Specialist, State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Hansen goes on to say he was "youngest son of Augustin Rock" in Augustin's 1855 mix-blood script affidavit. Line 21, page 4 of the 1850 census further gives Baptiste's profession or trade as a Farmer, that he was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and that he could not read & write. No color (White, Black or Mullato) description was stated. Line 22, page 4 of the 1850 census lists Agatha Rocque, a 66 year old female was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and that she could not read & write. No color (White, Black or Mullato) description was stated. This is assumed to be Angelic (or Angelique) and a misspelling by the enumerator. It couldn't be a misunderstanding because the enumerator, Alexis Bailly knew Augustin for many years. [I thought Agatha & Angelique might be variants of one or the other, but nothing found to verify it) - - - - - Regarding lines 23 and 24 of the "snapshot" image: The 55 year old male, Augustin Rocque, enumerated as head of household 35, family 35 on the 1850 United States Federal Census for District No. 1 in the County of Wabashaw Territory of Minnesota is determined to be Augustin Rocque who was born about January 1787, baptised 8 August 1787 at Michilimackinac, married about 1806 to Angelique, the daughter of a Fox father and a Sioux mother of the Mdewakanton band, died between 10 December 1856 and 23 February 1857, probably at Wabasha, Minnesota Territory. This was taken from "The Origins of the Roc/Rock Family of Prairie du Chien and Wabasha" Frontier Genealogy Among The Voyageurs, THE GENEALOGIST Spring 1997 Volume 11, No. 1 that was written by James L. Hansen, F.A.S.G. Mr. Hansen is the Reference Librarian and Genealogical Specialist, State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Hansen goes on to say, in reference to this enumeration, "As Augustin grew older his reported age fluctuated wildly. the [55] in the 1850 was low, as twelve years earlier in the 1838 roll of mixed-bloods he was listed as [58]." Hansen opines in the footnote to that statement that Augustin and other early Prairie du Chien settlers overstated their age to increase their authority in applications and affidavits. Line 23, page 4 of the 1850 census further gives his profession or trade as a Trader, that he was born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and that he could not read & write. No color (White, Black or Mullato) description was stated. Line 24, page 4 of the 1850 census lists Pauline Rocque, a 19 year old female, born at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Being she was not over 20 years of age no indication was made whether she could read & write. No color (White, Black or Mullato) description was stated. Hansen in another footnote identifies this Pauline as Augustin's granddaughter and her mother Therese, Augustin's 6th child, who died after 1836 and before 1855, probably before 1848. - - - - - Additional information: Not shown on the "snapshot" image, but on the same page 4 of the 1850 United States Federal Census for District No. 1 in the County of Wabashaw Territory of Minnesota is household 32, lines 12-17 containing Joseph Rocque & family. Line 12 contains the 43 year old male Joseph Rocque (another son of the above Augustin). Line 13 contains the 28 year old female Madeline Rocque (formerly Robinson, wife of Joseph). Line 14 contains the 10 year old Joseph Rocque, Jr. Line 15 contains the 8 year old female Domitille (identified by James Hansen as Mathilda). Line 16 contains the 9 year old male Baptiste (identified by James Hansen as Jean Baptiste). Line 17 contains a two year old male Louis Joseph (identified by James Hansen as a female Josephine) - - - - - Two pages earlier, page 2, at dwelling visited 18, family 18, line 35 we find Catherine (Rocque) (Lariviere) LaPointe, oldest daughter of Augustin Rocque. Catherine first married Michel Lariviere in 1827. They have four children, two of whom are enumerated in dwelling visited 19, family 19; Peter, head of household and younger brother Michell, lines 39 & 40). Catherine widows in 1834 and marries Francois Lapointe, line 34, in 1836. They have three children Xavier (line 36), Philomen (line 37) and Scolastic (line 38) Also, two pages earlier, page 2, at dwelling visited 25, family 25, lines 27, 28, 29 & 30 we find Louis Rocque, Nancy Rocque, Mary Jane Hudson & Edward Hudson. Louis (born about 1813 in Prairie du Chien) is the fourth child of Augustin Rocque (household 35 above) and younger brother of Joseph Rocque (household 32 above) - - - - - This census contains Augustin, his wife and four of his children. It does not contain the names of his other three children who died before 1850: 1. Augustin (born about 1807, baptised 5 May 1817 at age 10) marries a Menominee woman, Lajouseuse, in 1835 and he dies about 1838/39. They had a child, Pauline (born about 1833). Pauline was included with her grandfather Augustin. 2. Angelique (born about 1815 and died young without having children) 3. Therese (born about 1820 and dield young without having children) - - - - -

I missed the following earlier on page 13 in the Hansen article. It does give a year to the 17 April marriage and explains the confusion of a second wife, Helene. Still puzzled with the name Agatha on the 1850 census. - - - - - About 1806 Augustin married Angelique, a cousin of the "present Chief Wabasha61, and the daughter of a Fox father and a Sioux mother. 62 Like many of the early settlers in the upper Mississippi River valley, he married in the Indian fashion. The marriage was civilly recognized on 27 May 1823 at Prairie du Chien, where the "bride" was identified as "Angelique, a Sioux woman." 63 When their marriage was blessed by the Catholic Church "at Lake Pepin" on 17 April 1846, she was listed as Helene Winocinca Wakan, age 56. 64 That "Helene" was indeed Angelique is indicated in a letter from about 1854 where Augustin indicated he had been married to Angelique for 55 years, probably like Augusin's age something of an exaggeration. 6561 The Wabasha who was chief in 1855. He was the third to use the name (Charles C. Willson, "The Successive Chiefs named Wabasha," Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, 12[St. Paul, 1908]:510-512).

Hansen stated it is difficult trying to identify individuals when the same name is used. There were "four Josephs and four Augustins in three generations, and three Roc[que] women (including two named Catherine) marrying three Lapointe men (including two named Charles)." That's why I have to add birth & death dates to each name to keep myself from getting confused with what I write!! By the way, Hansen refers to the family as "Roc" throughout the article, except when specifically referring to a document where the name was spelled "Rock" or some other derivative. The researcher in the Ged.com uses LAROCQUE. I have Family Tree Maker which accepts ged.com files. What do you use?

I wonder if that is when people stated saying "Close enough for government work?"

madRock: I am guessing that the Joseph Rock/Rocque b.@1785, baptized in St. Charles,MO at Age 13,as Augustin-Joseph ,may be your Augustin,SR. Remember, Joseph Rock/Rocque was a fur trader, so it would not be unusual for he and his family( or possibly Jospeh with his son Joseph or Augustin-Joseph) to be in Missouri back then on business for his fur trade, since that was one of the hubs in Mo for the Fur trade. below is a link to St. charles,MO history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Charles,_Missouri#History

madRock, you may have misinterpreted my statement re, taking Hansen's assumption as a grain of salt, and I must apologize for not being clearer. I was referring to Hansen's statement re. the cenus takers in Minnesota Territory in 1836. You mentioned that the census taker back then was Alexis Bailey, who knew the Rocks well. which would make sense that he would not have actually visited the occupants in the house then. I have no disagreement with Mr. hansen's findings. He is tops in my book,re. genealogy. the information re. the Joseph rock baptized in st. charles Missouri...is from Hansen's article, that you have been quoting from. That one page Gedcom print-out has had me scratching my head. I am glad you posted your information and that of Mr. hansen. it has helped clear up my confusion re. your rock family.

madRock, you may have misinterpreted my statement re, taking Hansen's assumption as a grain of salt, and I must apologize for not being clearer. I am glad you posted your information and that of Mr. hansen. it has helped clear up my confusion re. your rock family. hermin1: Sorry, got busy on another family line. Had a couple good pieces of info come in and I wanted to stay with it while it was hot. Still need to get Hansen's commentary on Joseph Jack Frazer typed up and added to the Frazer? Fraizer? thread. I've been trying to find another copy of Hansen's work. I don't want to let go of my copy. Will be back later . . . . after the weekend. All the Best.
