Sara: we're not sure if this augusting rocque was Joseph's9the one born in canada) brother or another Augustin Rocque.all Louie knew was that this guy had a trading post on Rock island from 1819 to 1826.

Can you or anyone else forward me any archival documents of Mr Rocque/Rock being at Spirit Lake ND.
I can't seem to locate any off the net anyway.
Thanks,
Sara

Rock Island in Devils Lake is now a peninsula attached to the north shore. It is known as Camp Grafton, the ND State National Guard training camp. Military from all over the world attend classes at Camp Grafton. The Captain Herman Papers in the archives at the ND State Historical Society, Bismarck has some information. If I remember correctly Little Fish/ AKA Tiyowaste, told Herman how they attacked the fur post and killed one of the traders. Thinking they were Ojibwe instead of white men. I think the slain man was not part of the LaRock family. I am sure I mentioned in a previous post that the LaRocks still live here on the Rez. They are a French/Ojibwe/ Dakota family. Toksta ake, Louie

I forgot to mention that Rock Island can be seen on early maps of Devils Lake with the title Big island. However the Dakota name is Cokamwita (Center Island).

I've moved three times since my last post [Dec 13, 2011]. And I deleted my membership/subscription to this forum shortly after. Too much information for me to digest at the time. I'm back in again, re-reading all the posts on this old thread. A lot of information, a lot of confusion and misinformation. I have new information and a lot of clarification to post. I think maybe a new thread might be the best way to do it. Once I post a new thread, I'll be back here to make notice of the new thread.
