HIAWATHA INDIAN INSANE ASYLUM
SACRED BURIAL GROUNDS HEALING AND PRAYER CEREMONY
Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 12 noon The annual ceremony will be held in the town of Canton at the Hiawatha Country Club Golf Course between the 4th and 5th holes, located 18 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, off of Highway 18 East. Harold Iron Shield, founding member of Native American Reburial Restoration Committee began this annual event in 1988 and kept it alive until his death in 2008. It has now been revived to honor and give our prayers of peace and healing to those buried there. Everyone is welcome to attend. =================================== In 1902, the U.S. Government opened the Hiawatha Insane Asylum for American Indians only. The purpose was to care for those members of tribes all over the U.S. who were allegedly insane. The asylum was operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Indians who made up the population of the asylum were those Indians seen by the Government as "trouble makers"--spiritual leaders, medicine men, vision quest seekers, those who resisted reservation boundaries and boarding school students who did not conform to school policies. Today the 121 bodies of the Hiawatha patients who died in the so called hospital and could not be returned to their families lie in state in what is now the Hiawatha Country Club golf course. Just off the fourth fairway one will find a split rail fence surrounding the small cemetery, a monument sits in its middle bearing the names of those interred there. -A ceremony calling out the names of those known buried there with a prayer ribbon for each name will be tied to the rail fence in their honor with a final prayer for peace and healing will be offered. We ask that you: -Bring cedar, sweet grass, and sage for smudging, and tobacco for offering; a special token rock to lay it at the plaque of names as remembrance. -Bring traditional foods for offerings to “the pitiful ones.” And RISING HAIL, a Yankton Sioux group of singers and drummers will be coming Honor Harold Iron Shield's work, blessed be his memory; Please help get the word out. Send this flyer to your tribal and community leaders, friends and relatives, even if you know they would be unable to come. It is time to acknowledge the Hiawatha Indian Insane Asylum for what took place there and the only way to do that is to educate and tell everyone we know. Lunch will be provided in the club house for a $3 donation. For more information contact: Lavanah Judah - lavanah.judah@gmail.com Michelle Anderson - onedla@sio.midco.net

Hello Scararm,
These are the daughters of Elizabeth Pelagie Sarpy (1829-1918). Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Lestang Sarpy and she was married to Paul Pierre Narcelle (1816-1889).
Esther "Blue Eyes" Narcelle, b. 1852 (I do not have a dod for her) was married to Romaldo Rousseau (1844 - 1903), French Canadian. They had 8 children. You can look on the 1900 U.S. Fed Indian Census, Cheyenne River Reservation.

Hermin, just to let you know that all the Yanktons are listed on the 1934 & 37 ICS as being under Rosebud. They were still located on the Yankton Rez. This was due to the fact that the Yanktons rejected the IRA and their punishment was to be a sub-division of the Rosebud Agency and were denied self government until 1963 when they were allowed to have elections once again and elected Percy Archambeau as their tribal chair. My grandfather, Clement Smith was the official and unofficial tribal chair during the 1930s and up to WWII.
Many people make this error as it does say Rosebud Reservation but in fact as I have stated we were a sub-agency of Rosebud.

Thanks Hermin. I have been looking for exact information on this family as Two Lance is the father of Matilda Picotte-Galpin (Eagle Woman Who all Look At).
I have Father Madlon's tree on Honore Picotte which lists Two Lance as her father. I believe I posted that many moons ago.

What I have on this family is incomplete and I am still working on connecting the individuals. Most of the information out there is not correct as far as dates for this family. I have just gotten a hold of additional information but have not compiled it to make this family more correct but I will share with you what I currently have and when things change I will post The following is the only information I have had to work with and much of it is incorrect as I will explain: Uploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usAnd just most recently, I purchased a book entitled 8th Landing: The Yankton Sioux Meet Lewis and Clark by Mary Eisenman Carson. But, even her info is not correct but a little better than what is above: Uploaded with ImageShack.usForked Horn was born abt 1817 and is found on the earliest Yankton census. Uploaded with ImageShack.usVisiting Walking People Woman is married to Kills/Killed by the Thunder. She is born abt 1835 and d. 4 May 1919 Uploaded with ImageShack.usFor additional reference see the Fr Dan Madlon's Honore Picotte trees posted on this site and follow instructions on getting them printed out on 11 1/2 X 17 paper. I hope this helps you a bit. It has taken me a long time to try and work with this skimpy information to try to find all the right connections. Hopefully, within the next year I will have them all connected accordingly. Hinhangi-Brown Owl aka John Brown Owl, b. 1824 is also found on the Yankton census. He is married to Niyataninwin, b. 1833 Askeota means Many Hair Tufts--have not found any docs on this one. Winyanduta/Dutawin-Red Woman was married to Sitting Bull and one of his favorite wives. It is said she died but I am not so sure about that. She had a son who died in the battle of the greasy grass when he was kicked in the head by a horse. I have found conflicting sources as to who the mother of Wm Bean , Chief Blue Cloud is. Anyway that is it for now on this subject. It is late and I am getting a little light headed. So more later and I am happy to answer any questions that I can. Lavanah

I recently visited the SDHS and was able to copy 25% of this publication. If you are able to visit the Nebraska Historical Society in Lincoln, you can copy the whole publication for yourself. They will not copy it for you due to copy write responsibilities but if you copy it then it is your responsibility.
I was able to get the majority of the publication and did not copy the full 25%. I plan on going to Lincoln and copy the whole thing myself for research purposes.

The Thomas Flood on my tree was the 1/2 breed son of Charles Flood, b. 1837, Ireland--mother unknown. I have found no brothers or sisters from this union for Thomas. My source for Charles Flood being the father of Thomas comes from Renee Samson-Flood-Bruguier.
Thomas Flood was b. 5 May 1857, Wyoming and died 6 Apr 1907, S.D. He was married 1st to Ninette Desersa, b. 1859 and d. abt 1901. She was the daughter of Charles Desersa, b. 1840 Mexico and Julia "Jumping Woman" Campbell, b. 1845 (this woman is not verified as I obtained it from a public member tree on ancestry with no sources or references and I have thus far been unable to find documentation on her.)
Thomas and Ninette had the following children: 1. William, b. 1881 2. Daniel, b. 1882 3. Thomas, b. 1885 4. Mary, b. 1890 5. Charles, b. 1891 6. Eva, b. 1891 7. John, b. 1895 8. Louise, 1897 9. Kate, b. 1899 10.Bernard, 1900
Thomas then married Louisa Fallis and as far as I can see had no issue with her.
I have no information on a Cory Flood. Let me know if you need further information on this family and I will see what I have.

Most recently I took a trip to Pierre, S.D. to visit the SDHS. In my research I finally came up with some information on the patriarch of Hodgkiss family, William D Hodgkiss. William D Hodgkiss was married to two Sioux wins. The first was to a young woman of the Red Fox family. Their issue was: 1. William D Hodgkiss Jr; 8 Jan 1845 - 17 Jul 1927 2. Wincincanna Hodkiss, unkn dob - winter 1848 3. Alexander C Hodgkiss, 30 Apr 1851 - d. St Louis @ school 4. Oscar D Hodgkiss, 23 Feb 1853 - 11 Jun 1912 Second marriage was to Mary Sarah Walking Eagle Feather, aka Amani-Walks For/Forward or Walks on It. She was born abt 1832-36; their issue was: 1. Mary Martha; 11 Jan 1856 - Aug 1939 2. Henry Hodgkiss, b. 1858 - 6 Oct 1925 3. Blanche; b. 1860 - d. 1875; buried Ft Sully 4. Emma; 16 Jan 1862 - 13 Oct 1942 According to family oral history reported from Emma Claymore-Geary-Kessler, Mary Sarah had one sister who was married to Antoine LeBeau, b. 1824, and her name is Mary Margaret LeBeau, b. 1820 (but I feel this date reported on ICS may not be correct since most fur traders of French lineage liked their Indian women young teenagers. Also her first issue is born when she is 32 yrs old--almost unheard of for the time.) On blogs I have Mary Margaret's Indian name to Sicangu-Burnt Thigh, Makes Mouth and Little Thunder. Mary Sarah Walks For brothers were: Chief (Joseph) Four Bears, b. 1833 The Two Lances, b. 1830 Black Spotted Horse, b. (Is this Jos Black Spotted Horse?) Mary Sarah Walks For marries a second time to Yellow Man of Crow Creek. Fr Dan Madlon did a family tree for Honore Picotte, which include the family for Matilda Iyutanyan Picotte-Galpin aka Eagle Woman Who All Look At. He tree indicates that Matilda is the daughter of Two Lance of Pine Ridge and Winyan Maza of S.R. Other sources state her mother was Rosy Light of Dawn-Hunkpapa. And, that she is sister of Two Lance and Two Hawks. Two Lance I, has a son also of the same name, Two Lance (II), b. abt 1830 and another son, Two Hawks. Uploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usAccording to Fr Dan's tree, Two Lance II marries Amelia TaSinaManiWin-Her Walking Blanket, b. 1838 (she would have been 10 yrs old when she had Jos Blk Spotted Horse), 1900 US Fed Ind Pop Census states dob Mar 1829. Their issue is: 1. Joseph Black Spotted Horse, b. 1848, m. Shoot Making 2. Sophie Dutawin - no children 3. Cecelia High Rock/Good H.R., b. 1857, m. John Promise - no issue 4. Amy Cloud m. ? Well, it took some long time searching for the story. It is sad to say the least, but here is what I found. Margarette Laplante was b. abt 1864 to John Baptiste LaPlante, b. 1815 in Indiana and Josephine "Josette" LaPlante, b. abt 1837, a Yankton Sioux. See 1870 and 1880 Big Sioux, Union, Dakota Terr. census. I first find her on the '86 Yankton ICS married to Edward "Ed" Lyman, probably about 1885. They had a daughter in '86 who died '86-'87. He is gone by '90 census and she is alone. 1893 she is Margarette Sherman married to an unknown Sherman. If anyone knows please share. Margarette has two daughters by Sherman in '95 and '97, both do not survive. I do not know when she divorced Sherman but she goes by that name until '99 when she is Margarette Quinn. Margarette has a daughter with Samuel Quinn of the Sisseton Agency by the name of Cora Quinn, b. 26 Apr 1900. Cora is listed with her father on the Sisseton Agency census. This relationship does not last long in '02 she is back to Margarette Sherman and in '03 she is listed as Margarette Quinn. I could find no 1900 census that showed them living together, so maybe they did not. In the meantime, Charles Phillip Bruguier has divorced Agnes Arconge abt 1900. So from 1900 to 13 of Apr 1904 when he marries Susan Canfield, he is a free man. I presume he is having a good time before he has to settle down and is fooling around with Margarette. Margarette gets pregnant with Mary Bruguier who is b. 25 Apr 1904, 10 days or so after Charles marries Susan Canfield. Margarette dies in childbirth. Mary is taken in by her uncle Charles LaPlante who is newly married to Margaret Escacerga of Ft Peck. Mary now becomes Mary LaPlante, daughter of Charles and his wife Margaret. This is why you cannot find her. Charles and Margaret are in Wahehe on the 1910 and 1930 census. In 1920, I cannot find them in Charles Mix. But, that is when Mary Bruguier shows up living with her father on the 1920, Wahehe, Charles Mix census as Mary Bruguier and then on her marriage record she is also Mary Bruguier. Mary goes on to marry George A Westerman in 1926 who is living in Santee, Knox, Neb and divorced. Mary is a maiden and living in Greenwood, Chas Mix at the time. As far as I can determine at this point, they have two children: Linda and Paul. Mary Westerman was admitted 4 Oct 1936 along with Oscar Hope to the St Elizabeths Psychiatric Hospital in Washington, D.C. where both she and Oscar perished. Their bodies were shipped back to S.D. for burial. What I want to know is did they come home with their brains? When Hiawatha Indian Insane Asylum closed its doors in 1933, seventy one Indian patients were transferred to St Eliabeths, where 30% of them perished including my cousin, Peter Picotte. Sioux relatives who did not come back: Maggie Black Cat - Pine Ridge Albert Blaine - Yankton Joseph Carpenter - Cheyenne River Stella Fast Horse - Pine Ridge Sarah Shortwoman - Cheyenne River Peter Picotte - Yankton Mary Westerman - Yankton Oscar Hope - Yankton And, that is just from our Sioux Nation. Here is another clue as to Margaret LaPlante, mother of Mary Bruguier. I found a birth record for Cora May Quinn, b. 26 Apr 1900, Charles Mix, S.D. Parents are listed as Margaret LaPlante and Samuel Quinn (b. 1871 and listed on Sisseton Wahpeton census but always without wife/mother of Cora). Cora May Quinn marries John C Sully (b. 1892 - Santee) 12 Apr 1918 in Lake Andes, Charles Mix, S.D. Cora is living in Greenwood.
Margaret then marries Charles Philip Bruguier in 1901, according to War Eagle tree and has Mary (1904) and William Bruguier (no dob).

Thank you Hermin. I have been going through the War Eagle/Bruguier trees and one of them states that Charles Phillip Bruguier (b. 1870-3) was married to Margaret LaPlant (1864), daughter of John B LaPlante, b. 1815, Indiana and Josephine "Josette" LaPlante, b. 1837, in 1901 but I can not find her on any ICS. It also states that Margaret had a son, William Bruguier. Unless Margaret remarried and then the children went by their step-father's surname, which is not all that uncommon among the Sioux and is part of kinship. But, trying to find Mary Bruguier prior to the 1920 census and prior to her marriage to George A Westerman has been very difficult. Even after her marriage to George she does not show up on any ICS records.
Margaret LaPlante's -- Siblings are: John b. 1855, Joseph, b. 1857, Mary, b. 1859, Louis, b. 1860, Andrew, 1866, Charles, b. 1869, Julia, b. 1869, Moses, b. 1875;
Thanks Hermin, if anyone can find it you can or at least point to a direction.

ANSWER: Mary Bruguier Westerman b. 1904, died 16 Jan 1936 at St Elizabeths Psychiatric Hospital and her body was shipped to Yankton. I realize it was difficult to research without the dob. I could not find it until Dr Prandoni of St Elizabeths gave me Mary Westerman's age at date of death as 30. Searching I found the marriage record of Mary Bruguier and George A Westerman in 1926.
The first record I have Mary Bruguier she is listed as 16, yr old, 1904, daughter, on the 1920 census with father, Charles Bruguier, b. 1873 and mother, Alice Jewett-Bruguier, b. 1884. Also listed is Helen L, b. 1905, daughter, Mollie M, b. 1913, daughter, William Arthur, 1917, son.
Charles was married to Agnes Arconge in 1893 and was divorced by 1901. As far as I can determine there were no children from this marriage. And, in 1903-4 she is married to Henry Frederick who has children from his previous marriage only.
I have her mother listed as Susan Canfield (1882-1908) and her father as Charles Bruguier on my tree but I can find no census with her name as daughter of Susan and Charles. I have Helen Louise Bruguier b. 1905 and d. 1925 and Theophile Charles Bruguier, b. 1906 and d. 1906-7, as children of this marriage.
On the 1921 ICS for Yankton, Charles is listed with children: Helen, Mary Mollie, b. 1913 (listed as NIECE) and Wm Arthur, b. 1916. No Mary Bruguier, b. 1904.
So who is the mother of Mary Bruguier, b. 1904-5 and daughter of Charles Bruguier?
Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I am looking for the genealogy of Mary Westerman who died 16 Jan 1936 and was buried in Yankton, S.D.
I have been informed by the authorities of St Elizabeths that Mary Westerman was shipped to St Elizbeths Mental Hospital, Washington, D.C., along with Oscar Hope, 4 Oct 1935 and both perished there. Mary's body was shipped to Yankton, S.D. for burial.
Any information about Mary Westerman and her family would be much appreciated.

Canton is building a museum at the old railroad depot and plans to dedicate part of that to the Hiawatha Indian Insane Asylum. The mayor expressed a desire for this history to be taught in the schools and would like more middle school children to attend at next years healing ceremony. I thought this a wonderful idea and plan to present it to my tribes middle/high school teachers. Interest in our history must be seeded in youth or as adults it becomes more difficult to be become interested, if the seed was not planted. The ceremony including the post ceremony lunch gathering was about 4 hours. It was a good time for healing as many non white attendees expressed to me that they had not had such a feeling of goodness for a long time. I hope some of you will be able to attend next year. To those of you who were not able attend and had expressed that you thought of the ceremony all day; thank you for your positive thoughts and prayers, for this too contributed to the spiritual harmony that prevailed throughout the day. I originally called for an "ALL NATIONS" ceremony and had sent out the flyer to the tribal offices of the Minnesota Chippewa, Montana Blackfeet and Cheyenne, Oklahoma Cherokee's, Choctaw and Potawatomi, Arizona Hopi and Gila reservations and many more. In addition, to every Sioux reservation in Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Montana, and Minnesota. Some posted the flyer to their websites. I must thank the Lakota Times for posting the flyer, TaTanka.com, Native Village and many of you who posted the flyer on Facebook. You all contributed to making Harold Iron Shield's legacy and work a good memory that will continue never to be forgotten. If I have failed to mention those of you who contributed and helped, please forgive me--Wakan TaTanka has not forgotten you. Attached are some of the pictures that were sent to me by the Canton Historical Society. The photographer respected his limitations to photograph particular parts of the ceremony and we are grateful. I will be posting more pictures later as they come in.
