I am almost done copying the 1887 Sisseton Whapeton Census. And it is in Alphabetical order. Yey! I have copied up to the T's. A huge Thank-you to Annette Big Eagle for sending me that microfilm. I can do some lookups for anyone. Sara

Sherwyn, I came across a reference last night to a David Tonwanojan (sees light) in Sunset to Sunset the Thomas Riggs book. It says he was one of the leders in John P Williamsons church at the Yankton Agency and with the help of him and another man the first log building was made....Page 47 and later page 90 refers to him and interpets his name as (Lights of Town) is this the same person?
I have also started to read a book on Yankton sioux with some wonderful photos by Herbert T Hoover called Yankton Sioux. The book Remember your reletives is also pretty incredible and has writings on such people as Walking Elk, War Eagle and his son Longfoot names Iron Shaker or Mazakanwin and marpiya Kaidewin who married Theophile Bruguier and Tamaza Kandua who had not children. and others. Really a wonderful geanealogical source for some families.

Tamara, Yes, this is the same person. This is his Indian Name translation. He was a medicine man, ordained deacon and interpreter for the Sioux Nation in Washington, DC. I saw his photo for the first time last year. He was also half or partially blind. He picked his medicines on a new moon night, when the slightest bit of light was easy to follow in the darkness. He prayed and called on the ancestors to lead him to the medicines he needed to heal others. He is David "Towanojanjan" Ray, my great grandfather. Can you send me what you have on him? I would greatly appreciate any and all data on him. Sherwyn Zephier, P.O. Box 115, Marty, SD 57361 or fax me copies to 605 384-3071 Can you scan them and send them as attachments? SZ

Okay, I read on and answered my own question. It says that David Zephier married the full- blood daughter of David and Racheal Ray, named Sarah. He is pictured in this book along side him in some sort of delegation in 1904.

Linda, on your research on the Freiners have you run across a connection between them and the Philbricks. Clinton and Elizabeth Philbrick used the name Freiner when they were first married and I have not been able to determine why. There wedding and birth of a child were listed in a MN paper with the name Freiner.
I have seen some places where the husband takes the wifes last name but I have not been able to find much on Elizabeths parents or an English last name for her so I don't know if this could be the case here.
Thank you for your help.
