Dawn;
Thanks for the information. Is Tatiyopawastewin the mother of Ellen, Charles and Mary Stone? I have been looking for her for sometime but haven't had any luck with the records I have been going through.

Wazi, I was reading through a probate paper for Cekpawin yesterday and there is another spelling that is very close to the one above that is listed as Sophia Shaker (Tatioyopawastewin) that is the daughter of Cekpawin. Sophia's brothers are James Long, and Tukiska. One sister listed as Wayagiyotankewin. Cousins, Louisa Greeley, Bessie Shepherd, Samuel Goodvoice, and John Goodvoice. Thought I would mention since the spelling was so close.

I think I might have a list of all names that are supposed to have probate records in Sisseton I think the list I have is from the 1960's and I would be willing to do some look-ups. I dont know how easy it is to get information from the Sisseton BIA anymore as it was before the Lawsuit that I used to research there. The Sisseton Census would be incredible to see and If I am not mistaken I think you can order a copy of a microfilm at the rate of 30.00 per film. I thought it was a pretty good price considering the gas, time and paper per screen. I may be wrong but I think that was what the website stated, something that I have not done yet but would love to utilize in the future. I have been wanting to see the McLaughlin Census but dont know much about it yet. I was told by Ken Stewart at the archives that he was not aware of it being held at the SD Historical Society as someone had previously told me. He did say they had the McLaughlin papers and it might be a part of that, but it would be up to the individual to find out. I also have a copy of the Word Carrier in my possetion but as most of it is in Dakota and I wind up needing my Grandmother to translate, I havent made much use of it yet. I am able to look up specific dates if anyone needs me to. I was so very greatful for the sharing of the Elrod Scout papers and had wanted to very much to see it, for someone to scan and post a link for it on the other website, blew me away. The amount of sharing on this site is awsome and I find that it matches my personal feelings on historical and genealogical research. I have always felt that such history is not mine to keep and if someone wants to learn family information it can only benefit them as it has me. I have spent a great deal of time researching the Dakota Uprising from a Genealogical standpoint and although I am not authority and am humbled by the knowledge I see here, I would love to help if possible.

Tamara, that was very nice of you. I would love for you to be apart of the Memorial/PowWow this year over the Memorial Weekend here in Davenport. I am looking for help in the history display. If you have anything you want to share, you can present it at the Memorial. If you are coming from Ssseton I heard rumor that they wanted to charter a bus to come here. Talk to the Sisseton College about that, Rev Canku or Rev Simon or Scott Bravebull at the College would know about there plans to come.
Also Tamara, I can do lookups for the 1887 Sisseton Census I have it in a paper copy.
Thanks again for your offer to help people on this website. Sara

tamara: the 1917 McLoughlin Roll is humongous, a lot of name names on it. I know because I spent two weeks at the library printing off the roll from the microfim I and a friend got on Interlibrary Loan. I know Jackie Hahn has a copy,because she borrowed my copy to print off a copy of it.

Hi, I have copied all of the 1887 Sisseton Census.
The only Ray or Roy? that I see is this one...
#967 Ray Henry or it might be Roy Henry 46 years old #968 Mary Hakeiktawin age 43 years. #969 Edward son age 17 years. #970 Emma son 15 years #971 Mary daughter 7 years.
I will keep my eye out for the Ray family. Are you positive of the Dakota spelling of Towanojanjan? Do you know what the name translates too? Thanks, Sara

Well Wazi, it looks like Sophia Shaker or Tatioyopawastewiin is not the one you want. Sophia's children are listed as Sutahedan died 1887, Tukiska died 1894, James Long or Dowanhiyayena died 1899 and Wagagiyotankewin.

Sara, I am wondering about how many pages this document consists of. Is it massive or do you think it will be easy to copy, because I'd like to have a copy of this document in its entirety. There are many families here that are all asking for records to research their family trees. We are organizing meetings in the communities to assist as many of the families as possible. Some of them don't have any connection to the lawsuit, but only want to see the records so they can tell their children how their family trees are established. This is so educational for many families. Those that are just now beginning to research to establish their bloodline to the MMDO lineal descendancy need lots of help too. Can I get a copy of it for the use of the people here on the Yankton? I will send you a MO or Cashiers Check for cost if you give me an address to mail it. Many families here will really appreciate your help in the matter. Some need to catch up to those of us who've been researching for years. We hope to help them do so.

I'm looking for information for my GGrandfather who was originally known as Towanojanjan. His father is listed as being Wahpeton and his mother is listed as being Wakpekute from Minnesota.
Towanojanjan became David Towanojanjan in the late 1860's or early 1870's. He later became David Ray on the 1890 Yankton Sioux Census. David Ray-Towanojanjan, wife is Rachel Ray (Mahpiyaakinyewin), Daughter is Sarah Ray(David).
Do you have any information that give me a clue as to, who David Ray's parents were? SZ

I had an idea sometime back to develope a webpage that was set up to share the larger documents that I have. Maybe if one could scan and post as a link to download. I know there so many people who could benefit from information and I personally find it hard to make copies (not to mention expensive) and mangage to get them in the mail.
