1870 USCensus Redwood Falls,Redwood, Minnesota shows a John More.wife Ann age 35, son Moses (or Moores?) age 16,and jenet age 13.the writing is rather faint in spots on the sheet. Could this be John Mooers(Moore)? I don't know. But that census lists another person with that surname living in redwood countyMN. I don't see a John More family in the Town of Redwood Falls. There is a John More family, dwelling/family #45, in the Town of Lynd, Redwood County, MN. I feel this is John Moores, the son of Hazen Mooers and friend of Thomas Robinson The next Town of Lynd dwelling/family enumerated, #46, is that of a Thomas Robinson family. This should be the Thomas Robinson who is a brother of Madaline Robinson Rocque and a son of Dennis Robinson. THROUGH DAKOTA EYES, p. 216 footnote 10 & 11 states John Moores and Thomas Robinson scouted for the US Army 1863-1867 and settled claims in Hope Township in Lincoln County but the footnote does not say what date they settled in Hope Township. Footnote 10 above states that John married a sister of Thomas after or at the same time as settling the Lincoln County claims. Again, no dates included to ascertain if John's enumerated wife in 1870, Ann, is Thomas' sister or if John took another wife in Lincoln County. Atached is a .doc file containing the Lynd enumeration: Attachments:

madrock: I can't open the file. is this the photo snapshot i had sent you by email? Look at the postoffice. It says Redwood falls. I mistakenly wrote the name of the Post office for the town of Lynd, in Redwood County.

In my records for the Freniers, I found that Rose and John had a son named James, besides their son, hazen listed in the BIA Records. I wonder if James is the son listed on that 1870 US census, or is james the one that died before 1887 at age 2?The BIA Records only list a brother (no name) to Hazen, that died before 1887 at the age of 2.
So John had 3 wives, Rose frenier, Ann, and Mary Nagiyuhewin. Then, the John Moore I found that was married to Annie Reed is not John Mooers(or Moore) but someone else, because the Annie Reed, I found in the 1860 Census for Ninenger, Winona minn, was white. Her father ws anthony Reed(b. mass.), mother was Elizabeth A. also born mass.and she had a sister Lucy, and a brother.Ann would have been @ 24 yrs. old in 1870,not 35 as that 1870 Census for Lynd indicates.

Alexander Robinson (Chee-chee-long-way), son of a Scotch officer in the British army, who had been elected by his mother's tribe Chief of the Potawato- mies, those Potawatomies whom English and Amer- icans thought fierce and cruel, but whom the early French settlers had found to be "the most docile and affectionate toward the French of all the savages of the west ; ' ' whose ' ' natural politeness and readiness to oblige," says Tailhan, ''was extended to strangers," gave full proof of these characteristics of his tribe at the time of the Fort Dearborn massacre (1812). In that hour of tragic horror he and his French-Indian wife, Catherine Chevallier, sheltered the fleeing whites, and both are held in grateful remembrance in Chicago to this day. Robinson was later interpreter for Gen. Lewis Cass with the Chippewas in the treaty of Prairie du Chien. From E-book Our Debt To the Red man. there were several Treaties signed at prairie du chien; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Prairie_du_Chien

I mistakenly wrote the name of the Post office for the town of Lynd, in Redwood County. I thought that may have been what happened. But I have found cases in federal censuses where ancestors of mine have been reported twice. In two cases they were enumerated with their home family and again at a temporary location, same year. In one case, a female was away to nursing school and another was a raftsman at a boarding house in Reads Landing, MN. Do you have Microsoft Word on your computer? The document you cannot open is a MS Word version of a filled-in 1870 town of Lynd translation to the blank census sheet with only families 45 & 46; specifically John More (John Moores) and Thomas Robinson, probably next door neighbors.

Well I 'll be hornswaggled. I was able to open it on my computer that has vista. My other computers have either Windows XP or Win XP pro. it is similar to that snapshot I sent you. the 16 year old's name looks like Moores or Halers. I read through the census taker's listings to see how he wrote numbers and Capital letters. i am going to see if I can find a better copy of that census. i found this from NARA via internet Archive: i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt240/kouklamu/USPopulationSched1870.jpgDoes this look clearer?

The 1850 census of Wabasha County, MN, has only these three Robinsons:
63b 20 Robinson Marie 1 Minnesota pg0062a.txt 63b 19 Robinson Mary 20 Minnesota pg0062a.txt 63b 18 Robinson Thomas
There is no age listed for Thomas but his wife, Mary, would have been born around 1830. Ten years later there were quite a lot of Robinsons in the same county, but I doubt any were the same family as the above.

Located: Dennis Robinson at Prairie du Chien in 1825. I have been re-reading Peter Scanlan's "Prairie du Chien, French, British, American" because I have found in the past that his index is insufficient and there are people in the book who are not included in it.
In 1824 Congress passed a bill requiring that Indian Agents choose the spots where they thought trade with Indians would be suitable. This did not sit very well with the traders, who did not want to be limited and so..."May 6, 1825 a protest against the law locating traders by the Indian Agents came from Prairie du Chien and was signed by Joseph Rolette, Dennis Robinson, J.H. Lockwood, P. Hurtebise, Alexis Bailly and Alexander Roc...."
The fact the he signed the document of protest indicates to me that Dennis Robinson was still involved in the fur trade in 1825.

I have information on the Robinson family as well. Thomas Robinson was my GGG grandfather. I am still trying to connect pieces as well. Some of the Robinson family went into South Dakota and are listed on the Flandreau Santee Sioux Rolls. There is also talk that the family was Assiniboine. Rumor also has it that Thomas was married to both Marys at the same time. Quite a few of them moved to Ft. Peck, Montana and I know some went to Arizona.

mdewakan welcome to our website.. there were at least 3 Thomas Robinsons. there was the Thomas Robinson, brother of Madeline Robinson, the one who married Marie Vicstoria Frazier, and the One who allegedly married the former wife, nancy Niyawastewin, of thomas Robertson. I found a fourth Thomas Robinson, but according to my search, he was the one that was Married to Marie Victoria Frazier. Would you be willing to share your information with us?

I have a Mahpiyawastewin married to a Dennis Robinson or Robertson. His son Thomas, aka Tatanka Robinson and a Mary Morand/Mastin had my gg grandmother Madlan. This is according to the Flandreau Census. Madlan was married and had two daughters. After her divorce, she went back to Flandreau and eventually remarried. She taught sewing at the boarding school since she was a dress maker. Now I know that her mother is either buried in Flandreau or might be Wolf Point, MT. I know that either her mother or husband's mother died there. A lot of what I have found is digging through records and other researchers. I also have dealt with the Flandreau tribe. I know that the bloodline in Flandreau is in dispute. Madlan and her siblings are listed only as a 1/4, but a sociology report on the tribe states she is nearly full blood. Madlan for the longest time refused to acknowledge her native heritage and didn't talk about it. I suspect if my connecting the dots right, the Robinson clan was at Ft. Snelling. I also believe that there was traumatic experiences. The clues I have had came from my grandmother that lived with her. There are times when my grandmother isn't willing to talk about it. My grandma did know that we have French Canadian on that side. I don't know where it fits in exactly. I have been looking at the Minnesota connection and after meeting up with some other family, I am looking at the Montana connection. Madlan is buried in Spokane, Washington. She also went by 5 different spellings. I don't have my notes with me right now but I will look into them.
