Owen's parents were asa Wakanshanku and Nancy Mahpiyawastewin(born @1824, and died 3 Dec. 1908). I have been unable to find anything on Kate Wapaha, However, her father, John B. Wapaha was married twice, first to Mary Hunton /Shanskawin on Aug. 17, 1879 at Santee(Santee marr. Register). the Santee Register ,Book 1 does not list the parents of the couple. The second marriage was to Nancy Winyangewin and they were wed Aug. 18, 1895 at Santee. the marriage record lists his parents as Wapaha and Tamzaza, and Nancy's as Hepanwaste,and Harpikasnasnawin. The marriage was performed by Rev. William Holmes. I have Nancy Stone(Myrick)Wakute,as being born to Julia Stone and Hakandipeta(ref. rootsweb, World connect Project link; and the 1902 register Santee Indian Families. Both references give Julia's Idian name). I am curious in re. to this marriage license you wrote about. Is there any chance that your relative would be willing to let you scani it and post it here for us to see? i am rather puzzled by wht you posted about the Marriage License. the ternsltion for Wpaha I believe means head or ht. I am not sure what Wapate translates to. Isnt Wapate the screen name for the incredible people who have been working on the Wabasha/Old Bets history? If memory serves, the husband side of the team told me it translated to "The Butcher" and is the name for Thomas Wabasha. Tamara |

RE: JOHN B WAPAHA marriage license Re: Reply #56 & 53. I have a copy of a marriage license for John B. Wapaha to Nancy Wakute. Not sure how to scan it and get it on this website, but if someone wants to contact me and walk me through it, I would be more than happy to post it. It states John Wapaha was 50 and Nancy Wakute (her married name from a previous husband) is 53. They are listed as Red, born in Minnesota and living in Knox County at the time of marriage. They were married on August 18, 1895 by William Holmes. Witnesses were Levi Trudell and Fannie Moose. The date Augus 17, 1895 is on the upper part of the license, so it is possible they were married that day instead of the 18th. His parents are shown as Father: Wa pa ha, Mother: Tahaza or Tahazu. Her parents are listed as Father: Hapuwatet or Hauwater and Mother Ho apt ka Snu Ru??? It says they were married at the Santee Agency, Neb. Here is the marriage record you speak of-  |

I thank you too. Levi Trudell who witnessed the marriage was my gg grandfather. It's always nice to see another document with an ancestors name on it.

I am hijacking this older thread because I found someone buried in the St. Felix Cemetery at Wabasha, who may have also been a descendant of the chief. The name is Theophilus Lachapelle but I don't really know if he is the same Theophilus by that surname--the man I have been meaning to research for awhile now, even though he is no kin of mine. But his case is quite interesting.
This Theophilus in the St. Felix Cemetery [Findagrave] seems, in the beginning at least, to be connected to Prairie du Chien--and my Theophilus certainly was. The Theophilus of Wabasha had a father named Pierre Lachapelle and his mother was Marie Louis Brisbois, this last being a prominent fur-trading family of Prairie du Chien. However, some other information I see about the Wabasha Theophilus makes it seem unlikely he could be the Theophilus I am researching because....well...the Wabasha Theophilus was getting married when my Theophilus was supposed to be in a "hospital" for the insane.
In 1849, at Prairie du Chien, a handsome would-be politician named Theophilus Lachapelle murdered a certain Louis Mayard and burned down his house for good measure. Lachapelle was found not guilty by reason of insanity and the excuse for the man having gone off his rocker was said to have been that "he studied too much". Or maybe that was the defense thought up by his lawyer. There was quite a bit about this in an ebook I read not too long ago--which has since disappeared from the Web. Too bad. But I can't recall--or perhaps it wasn't even stated--what became of Theophilus Lachapelle in the end. Did he live out his years in the asylum--or Wabasha, MN??

Yes, but the question is--is it the same Theophilus Lachapelle who committed the murder of Mayard at Prairie du Chien? For it to have been he, he would have had to be released from confinement within a few years.

Mink, no it is not the same Theophilus laChappelle who murdered Mayard. this Theophilus Lachappelle spent the rest of his life in the insane asylum.
The Theophilus Joseph Lachapelle who married Isabelle Cratte was a river pilot.Added: He was the grson of Antoine Lachapelle and Pelagia laPointe,by their son pierre "Peter " Lachapelle and wife Isabelle (Elizabeth) Cratte.

Thanks, Hermin. The other one was a territorial legislator. His was rather a famous case and I wonder if the river pilot ever got some strange looks when he said his name was Theophilus Lachapelle!  Now I have to find out who the parents of the politician were and if he was related to the river pilot--since both had connections to Prairie du Chien. |

Theophilus Lachappelle died Jan. 1863. buried in st. Felix Cem. Pepin Twp,Wabasha,Minn. Not a big point but I've seen it on someone else's post or website as well. St. Felix cemetery is located in Wabasha Twp not Pepin Twp. The cemetery is located in the "Rocque Addition" of the city of Wabasha(downriver). Joseph & Madaline Rocque donated the parcel of land to St. Felix church to build a church. A decision was made to build the church closer to the center of town and so the donated land became additional cemetery space. Two streets nearby are named for Jos. & Madaline Rocque's son and his wife; Augustin Way and Angelique Street. Pepin Twp is upriver from the city of Wabasha. Read's Lading is within Pepin Twp. |
