Yes you did Sunshine and I passed the info on to the Native American Child Care Center, First Nations Outreach Center, and the Sioux City Office of Indian Education.
Thank you,

Hello, its me again. I seem to be finding the same people on each board I read Without stepping on any toes, and believe me I do not wish to do that, you have a wealth of information on this site. The trouble is (ducks for cover), is that it is scattered throughout. I would guess it is also repeated? If there were a way to combine genealogies, as they are seen in a genealogy program (I have tried literally all of them, I think, and I use Legacy), an online database would be ideal. I am willing to do some typing for that project. I believe ancestry.com allows you to add your family online, BUT anyone could put ANYTHING on it without documentation, and that is the key word here. I have been doing my own genealogy since 1959, a mere babe and back them we never imagined crossing paths with other family members, let alone the Internet. I am still in the process of gaing back and trying to document entries, and that is a job with over 50,000 names! The most difficult part of this is hosting, where you would be allowed enough space, to place all the wonderful documents I have seen, and I have only been here TWO days. If anyone needs help in Quebec, I have many resources. I am also a member of ancestry.com, so if you need a census or lookup, just ask You are all interesting and a wonderful group. Thank you for allowing me to share with you. I remain, DarkWolfe PS-Big Jon, I added a larger photo of that artifact. I am beginning to think it belongs in a museum rather than on my wall

I wish we could set up a database of all the records we have found. Something like Ancestry.com, with all the searchable and indexed records, but free and for Native genealogy. The problem is how to go about doing something like that. Until then, it wouldn't be a bad idea to make CDs and pass them out to the people who want them. Hi Jimmy, If you go to one of my websites (no I am not soliciting), at the bottom you can see a logo for Host Rocket, who hosts 4 sites for me, no make that 5. It costs $20 to register a name, per year, and then $29 to upload the site, a one time fee. Then if you choose 2 years it is only $4.95 per month, but you pay up front. Then I think you get unlimited space, because it keeps changing. Read for yourself. It says $8.95mo, but that is if you go month to month. The reason I am telling you about the icon on my page is, when someone goes through me, I get $75 as an affiliate, which I would be willing to give back, in this case, once the deal goes through and sent to me. Another advantage is no ads. I am a web designer and willing to help out. Just another random idea to throw out there. I have setup several sites for people, just using their credit card. But you can do it all yourself. I remain, DarkWolfe

I remain, DarkWolfe I am beginning to think it belongs in a museum rather than on my wall I WOULD HAVE TO DISAGREE!...AN OBJECT LIKE THAT BELONGS WITH ITS FAMILY...YOU SHOULD PASS IT DOWN AS IT HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN TO YOU...I AM GUESSING THAT IT MEANS A GREAT DEAL TO YOU(just from what you have written)...AND MAYBE YOU HAVE YOUR OWN BELIEFS, BUT YOU HAVE IT FOR A PURPOSE(which may or may not be clear to you at this point)...THERE ARE FORCES WHICH WE CAN'T UNDERSTAND, AND I BELIEVE YOU HAVE IT BECAUSE OF THESE FORCES...I DON'T WANT TO GET INTO RELIGION IN THIS FORUM, SO BELIEVE WHAT YOU WILL... Big Jon, I can only guess at what you are saying, but believe I "get it." The thing is, this artifact, although handed down in my family, originated from a trade at a trading post. When you say it belongs with family, wouldn't you think it belonged to a tribe, rather than to me? I am of the faith, all things happen for a reason, and part of that is my coming to this website. I have never joined a traditional church, because of my "ways". I will not go into that as well In my life I have had a few strange occurrences, which cannot be explained (by me anyway). At 12 yrs old I attended a one-room school in the Sierras. One day at recess, I wandered out by some trees, and suddenly saw the kids running back to the school, when it was too early. The teacher frantically was waving me to join them. I heard a rustling and turned away from her, and about 10 feet away was a Timberwolf, looking into my eyes, all the while I returned his gaze. To this day I do not know why I was not afraid. I felt such an inner peace and I know I was still smiling, as the teacher finally grabbed me as I walked back. (I had a similar meeting, with a black panther, which had gotten loose from a circus, in a field when I was eight or nine.) While I am asking questions, can you recommend any books on religion and traditions? I have never been able t find what I am looking for. I am finding I am enjoying being here, more and more with each page I read. Thank you. I remain, DarkWolfe

You are correct in saying it means a great deal to me. The day my mom gave it to me to repair, I knew I would not be returning it. To her it was nothing more than a conversation piece, a decoration, and that is very wrong! I knew when I was stringing it back together, it belonged to me. It was not her family, but my father's, who handed it down.
When I go to Nebraska, I will try and find out from the local people what they know about the trading post, and what became of the other items in my great aunts house. I should have done this long ago.
With heavy heart, I remain, DarkWolfe

I have to agree with Jon in that as it means much to you, it may be best with you. I have one item that I feel that way about. It is a painting from a now well known artist my grandfather knew many years ago, I often think it belongs in a museum. But when I look at the old family pictures from 1960 or so and see it on the wall with my grandparents sitting with friends in the kitchen or living room, I know it belongs with me. The only other thing I might consider is (considering what sort agreement is offered) putting it with the rest of the artists collection at Crazy Horse Museum in honor of my grandfather's memory. Nice to meet you DarkWolfe (how do you say the name in Dakota? - Jon? wanna give it a try?!! -I only know Wolfe to be Sunktokca or Sugmanitu or something like that) Tamara

Greetings Tamara, Thank you for the kind, and wise words of encouragement. I have been given a whole new way to look at this artifact. I am now believing it more a necklace, since I have shortened it. It would be an honor to see this painting, if you care to share at some point. I am somewhat an artist and poet myself. I have several websites, but the only one which I shall send is: www.darkwolfe.netThe others are either unfinished, or have nothing I care to publish at this time. Nothing bad or illegal, you see, just not advertising them now. I have used the name DarkWolfe since 1995, when the Internet was in its infancy and I needed a chat name. It all goes back to the story of the Timberwolf. I saw a photograph of one, the very day I was looking for a name, and so it began. Thank you for telling me the Dakota version, I am finding all of this most enlightening. Although I do not have Sioux heritage (that I am aware of), I am finding this site to be something I was drawn into. I do have Cherokee in my background and for many years told people I was "part Cherokee" in conversation. I had also told my children of this. One day at a park, one of my children came over with another child and I suppose he wanted proof from me that he was telling the truth. I said, "Yes, we are part Cherokee." An old man sitting on the bench across from me, looked up and quietly said, "which part?" Puzzled, I asked him to repeat what he had said. Then he asked me if it was my arm, my leg, or just what part of me was Cherokee. We had quite a conversation after that, and never again have I said I am part Cherokee. I know literally nothing about Indian ways, and hope it is alright to come here and soak up the knowledge of your patrons. I am willing and anxious to learn more. I remain, DarkWolfe

I have always love Wolves and Mr Denney gifted me with a nice pic with one on the Reference Board. I love the way the word for wolf is like "different dog"! My grandfather was HoksinaTokca and his g/grandfather was said to have possessed the spirit of the Wolf and that no wolf would harm him and he would never them. I wonder if a bit of that could still exist in my own veins... ? Maybe I am actually part wolf and not just the mother of a little bear.. -MatoCistina Ina!
DarkWolfe, the websites are beautiful! I am very intersted in this as my young niece is studying this type of work. I have asked her to help me with a logo -I was thinking a Bear/Mato but maybe I need a Sunktokca/ Wolfe! I realize you are very clear in that you are not advertising, so I thank you for indulging me with the link. Personally, I feel that we owe much to a number of non-indian people who have assisted with their skills and knowledge, contributing to the overall working of this board. Myself, I love to learn other cultures, not just my own. I think that is exactly the type of attitude that will help to eliminate stereotypes, racism, and ideas that divide us as human beings. I have never held to the idea that we are all the same, although "we are all related", and rather that we need to understand, accept and respect our differences.

I would like to inquire if anyone could help me obtain a document showing Richard Allen and Josephine (Makhdgewin) as the parents of Sam H Allen - born 5/15/1868 or 1869? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. My email is jrederth@svtv.com. Thanks again all of you.

I am new, and don't know alot about your system, but Cd's would definitely be helping me right now. ON the side, I do fundraising for organizations and help find grant money. I just gave the website grants@seliger.com to Jackie to pass on as they have many tribal funds available right now. Also, what about The Waitt Foundation(now Kind World?) You do need to form a formal group though; at least a spokesperson willing to call Foundations adn ask what their requirements are. There is a "TON" of grant money available. Like this project, you just need to know where to go to get the right answers!!!!! Best, Sunshine I would love to get funding to start a organization. Everyone is here now I just need the help to get going. What can I do? I have staff here that know that I need a base set up and some supplies to match the need for this kind of work, computers, CD's, paper...and staff pay coverage. I could come up with a spokes person and the group and the total cost for how many years under requirements for funding that would be allowed. Next step is who do I need to talk to? let me know.

Dark Wolfe: Don't feel that you are alone in wising you had gotten more information from your dear aunt aboutthetrading post when she was alive. I was able to get my motherto talk about her family , and what she knew about my dad's family, in Greece about two to three months before she died. i taped my converstion with her, and have made copies for my siblings to have . I also had to translate for them what she told me in Greek, to English. I was somewhat amused, because my mom had never seen atape recorder before, and she was amazed, when i played the tape back for her. she kept me up half the night having me paly it back forher again and again and agin. I was going to try to get her to talk about my father's side of the family, but she had the styroke that led to her demise. I tried many times to talk with my dad about his family, but he would not say anything. My mom said he had had a very hard life when he was young. his mother had deserted the children, after his father died when he was @3 or 4 yrs old. I was able to find out some of his sad history from my mom, and in the past four years more about hisfamily, from his great nieces and nephews who are still alive in Greece. personally, I feel the relic belongs to you. i amthinking that the local papers knox country may have some back issues that may tell something about a trading post that was operating near Santee way back round the 1850's or 60"s. I know it is mentioned in a book called "Completing the Circle." The South Dakota Historical Society at Pierre, SD,may have something on it also.

Thank you Jimmy! I forgot to send you the link to my "storage file", but I see you found it and have posted my "stuff" I found last night. I may have to reboot my computer, as the theme background is all messed up and I cannot create threads. I do not seem to have any problems on any other boards, but maybe this is something I need to do.
I forgot to post the missing link to my ancestor on the Renville/Rainville/De Rainville family, but just now added it to your post you did for me. I thought by making this folder for me to add things, at least I would not loose or forget them.
I am making a web site where I can add things I have had in my family, and will let you know the address when it has enough on it. If I start from scratch there, I will not repeatedly duplicate what is already here. Forgive me for doing that so often, but I am trying. The search option is not helping me. I am making the web site it not only for the Indian information it contains, but maybe some of the whites will read and "learn" about our heritage there.
I remain, DarkWolfe

Dark Wolfe: Don't feel that you are alone in wising you had gotten more information from your dear aunt about the trading post when she was alive. I will be going to Nebraska this summer, a few elder relatives are still living and may know something. I will let everyone know if anything comes of it. I have searched the Internet about this trading post, but perhaps it was just a stop-in-the-road and nothing more. Mc Cook is still a small place. BUT, my grandfather was born in Bloomington, Knox county, so for all I know it may have been up there! I keep remembering the name "Roman Nose", which I can hear in my fathers voice, as a small child. I wish I knew what that was about. Thank you. I was hesitant when I first told about it. I was afraid someone might be angry that it belonged to a "white woman" and that it belonged with a tribe somewhere, which is what I thought at that time. Now, after talking with Jimmy, Vicky, Big Jon and Tamara, they have made me come away thinking thusly: Perhaps this necklace brought me to Oyate, where I am meant to help and make friends. I know it has been doing some "magic" in my life and I feel things when it is around me. It had never been photographed until the day I put it on this board, nor had I told anyone of it, besides sharing at school when a small child. I wish to thank all of you for your kindnesses to me, and allowing me to share. I still have so many questions, and learn from all of you everyday. DarkWolfe
