Hi All just checking in, any thing new on Emma, Nancy and Julia?? Ed Ming said somthing about the Wabasha's looking at our papers, not sure why, maybe some kind of varification? Hope things are well with every one. Jamie and Sara, Nice job on the new site name and look. now if we can just set up some kind of index catalog so that who ever is searching can just type in a name or census and "POOF" there it is, that would be so cool, I get these ideas but just don't have the tech smarts to do it, but the old cyberwiz (Jamie) can probly do it doaksha Wapate

i don't know how to explain my idea, or brain fart as it may turn out to be, so I wll try to give an example of how this would work: Set up a database that includes each person's English name and/or english translation of Indian Name, Indian Name, birth date,Death Date, Parents Names(if known), spouse 's name(s)*, spouse's parents, marriage information(date, place), names of children, reference source9s). I know you will say, well there are Genealogy programs already out therethat you can use. this is true.(s). but I haven't found one that can include all the above information. Plus youhave the factor that a lot of these people married more than once, and some of them went by more than one name.
Simpler yet, set up a program that includes the person's English Name, Indian Name and english Translation of Their Indian Name, and the names of each of their parents with Indian name, and English Translation of the name. Ex. for a person like John Wamhditanka Big Eagle, parents: Hot foot(Indian name), and pretty woman(Indian Name), you type in his English name John big Eagle, the you get the names of his parents and their Indian Names as well. You would have the following variables,I think(I am not a computer expert, Jamie would know about this stuff) english Name, Indian Name with english Translation, each parents name ,each parent's indian name with English Translation, or both parent's names with English translation of their names. so that you can key in any of the variables and come up with the rest.the neat thing about this database would be that you could type in say,Hotfoot(Indian Name) and asked it to bring up all persons with the father whose name was hotfoot aka ouchiwowi. The same would apply if you typed in the mother's name with indian name), pretty woman aka oohlala. Like I said this may be a brain fart for all I know. I do know that Charles Eastman worked on a project for the BIA from 1903-1909 to provide the english Names for the Siouxs. No one seems to know if his work was ever published.and I would n't know where to look to see if it was.

Pretty Woman aka "oohlala"... lol I love that part.
I think that would be a great idea. Jamie and MDenney together I'll bet could come up with something. I have seen this idea suggested or dreamed of by many of the top researchers and some regulars like myself. Might lead to something much bigger. It would be something that could be used by places like Native Resource Center and other hot genealogical spots.

Yeeeeha! this all sounds great, all I ask, is just keep it simple, for dummies like me you know like "Research for Dummies" We also need to remember there are some elderly out there that are trying to use our site too and they have never used a PC before, I spoke to one of them last week, so simple is good for us!! So keep up the good work, if I have any more brain farts I let them blow your way. Wapate
