Is Hakewaste's Band that is mentioned in the 1867 Santee census the remnant of Taoyateduta's band? Family history says that Hakewaste was a member of Taoyateduta's band at the time of the outbreak, and I wonder if he succeeded, at least temporarily, to the leader's role?

Hello Tokakte. On the 1860 Mdewakanton Whapekute Annuity list for 1860. Hakewaste is listed as #7 Hakewaste - 1 man, 1 woman and 3 children. Total of 5 people receiving $20. each. He is listed under Chief Taoyateduta. I would say your family history was right. Sara

Sara-- Thanks a bunch! Sadly, the three children mentioned in that annuity list were the ones surnamed "Hakewaste" that died in the terrible smallpox epidemic of 1873 that decimated the Training School. Robert Hakewaste was listed on the Santee Scouts Roster of 1873 as "Hakewaste Wilson", and the younger children, my grandfather included, began using that name. Tokakte

My husbands great grandfather Samuel Red Wolf was on that 1873 Yellowstone Expedition with Hakewaste. I hope to find more records regarding the scouts from Santee on that 1873 Expedition. You can order military scout records for Hakewaste, it costs about $37.00
I sent for Samuels a few months ago. It was a large file. Gave alot of info.
Good Luck

Tokakte,
I am happy that you mentioned Robert Hakewaste. He is my Great-Great Grandfather: On the 1900 Santee Agency Register of Indian Families he is listed at #346. He was 73 years old, a Full-Blood Santee Sioux. His Dad: (please forgive my translation) Mazawasican. His mother: Tunkanokiyewin. #347 Elizabeth Hakewaste "Supretuwakauwin" She too, was a full-blood Santee, neither Mother nor Father's name listed.
Samuel Johnson, age 17, a grandson lived with them. He too is listed as a Full-blood Santee. His mom and dad were; Frank Johnson and Susan Brandt.
My line? Gordon E. Kitto, Sr., Grandmother Victoria Wilson, Great Grandfather Charles Wilson, Robert Hakewaste Wilson.
Let me know where to send the page and I will copy it and mail it or fax it or email it, to you.
Your Cousin,
Curtis M. "Mike" Kitto

All is well here, I am completing my second week of being the Acting Director. I am having a great time. Wish we could get a little rain, but other than that, All is well.
I will send the page tomorrow. Since the page is a little large, I will send it first class by itself. I can get up to the Office Depot on Shady Grove Road, by my house and copy the entire register and will mail that to you Saturday. I hope you have as much pleasure reading the names as I did.

Richard, Don't you have the 1902 Santee Family Registry? If you don't, and your computer is large, I can email it to you as an attachment.

Then I had to wash my dog, he stunk like skunk, he was muddy too. Then I had to wash myself. And here we are. Send me your address and I will add it to the copy list I have for Kinko's. Sara

Dear Singsdakota,
I am so very happy to hear from you. I remember Grandfather Steve Redwing and Aunt Elsie (both deceased). (They were married and that is how I remember referring to them) I can still picture them both so very clearly. They lived in Fremont, Ne., one of their daughters was named Aunt Genevive, a grandson Donald. (all deceased) They were such nice people, I was just a child when they were alive, but they left me with very good memories.
Your Cousin,
MIKE
