To those that could and would help
I'm trying to locate info on my grandmother Rachel Davis ( my maternal grandmothers grandmother ) who was born 1865 in sumpter Clarendon county south Carolina .it was said that she was a Santee native person full blooded born along the river of the same name.at 15 years old (in 1880) she wed a man named Adam singleton and between them had 19 children . 8 of which died due to fever and illness that swept thru the Carolinas . after research the name Mitchell also came up and I was told that they were also native and had origins in places like Minnesota and Nebraska . both Adam and Rachel for a time disappear from Carolina census altogether and just vanish. Adam was from another tribe of unknown origins and was said to have been one quarter black. They both lived in a place called friendship parish near clarendon count sc (Off topic) I'm also interested in " Navajos" posts regarding Santee Sioux origins and the rumors of a migration from the southeast to what is now the great plains .this is of great interest to me and I was run out of another forum for challenging others on this very possible truth.
Thank you
I'd also like to mention that it was handed down to me orally that Rachel Davis practiced a certain type of medicine where she would dig up herbs and roots to help cure the sick. She passed this skill on to her daughter (my great grandmother) Luella singleton . who moved and lived in pender county north Carolina eventually settling in Wilmington where Rachel had followed her because of an oath that Luella would take care of her mother Rachel in her old age . unfortunately mother outlived daughter and my grandmothers mother passed at the very young age of 35 when my grandmother was only four years old. In census records both Rachel and daughter Luella are listed as mullato . common name given to natives at the time .

As far as I know Adam Singleton ( three parts native one part black) was born free and wasn't a slave but served in the confederate armys in the fight against the north. he was born in 1850 - guess served in the army at 15 ( don't know how that's possible) my grandmother at 15 meets adam in 1880 and marries him at 30 yrs old. between them they have 19 children. there were many stillborns and out of the 19 only eleven survived...Luella came out of that eleven and grows up and meets a blak man named kater vann (vann being Cherokee but this man was all the way black) so luella is one half santee and one half other unknown tribe. Luella marries Kater and they move to pender county north Carolina. Adam and Rachel follow her to north Carolina to pender county and then from there to Wilmington nc to the cape fear area on the coast right near Wrightsville beach. Rachel trains daughter Luella at herbal medicine and Luella becomes some sort of "town healer" gets pregnant and has my grandmother Lueva ruth vann" my grandmother turns four and Luella dies and is sent to live with an aunt......both adam and Rachel outlive their daughter Luella and continue to live out the rest of their days there in Wilmington never returning to south Carolina sumter clarendon county area where they were from

what dates they passed away and when I have no idea . but I do know for a fact that adam singleton lived well into his nineties but his tribal affiliation remains a mystery or who his parents were .... my grandmother rachels people were reffered to as "river folk" by my grandmother when she sat me down and told me this story over the course of a couple hours ......she said " my grandmother practiced what they used to call "Zuta" or "zuzu" back in them days in the south." Kinda reminds me of the word "pezuta" but everyone there being a superstitious people believed "Zuzu" to be synonymous with "witchcraft" and to be very bad ...but it was nothing more than herbs and roots and bark from trees according to my grandmother when she was alive

Thanks and creator bless you for that . if its not too much to ask . there were some family names that came up once a " golden" or a colder Mitchell " that pops up in my family . and there's a colder or golden that pops up in a Santee roll somewhere in the Midwest . could these be the same Mitchell's ? I'm also concerned because if I'm not mistaken the census only listed people as either black or mullatto. There's no doubt about African americans being part of the family but these particular names and family members listed here _ were said to have been Santee . is there at all a possibility that they were and for reasons unknown for the moment were listed as black or mu for mullatto ? I believe my grandmothers accounts on our family's history and tribal affiliations . its been nagging me in the back of my mind where Adam and Rachel wandered off too. I doubt that friendship parish kept any records of natives that were living in the community which was a large population of christian missionaries at the time . but this here looks pretty solid . it rules out the possibilities of my family coming from wales/Scotland the way someone suggested once

Brenda Lyndell vann was my mother and she died in 2002 in Bronx new York city of very unnatural causes. This is true. I'm Brenda's son .http://death-records.mooseroots.com/l/100133601/Brenda-Vann?rnd=687220. If u go here u can see a picture of my mother at age 18 and you'll see that she wasn't fully African american

santee71; your mother was a very pretty woman.Adam was a mixed blood Cherokee.if he was 3/4 Cherokee and 1/4 Black, one of his parents had to have been 1/2 black, while the other was a full blood Cherokee. You mention that the names 'colder Mitchell" , "colder" and "Golden" pop up in your family.Which relatives are these names associated with? our records don't show any of these surnames associated with the Mitchell families of Santee or Minnesota.
I would suggest you contact JackieMHahn@aol.com,as she works for the Nebraska Indian Community College in Dakota city,NE.Tell her to log in to this website and check out your thread, and give her your reaon why.

I'm sorry , my apologies , but did u say that Rachel was Cherokee ? This doesn't sound accurate to me . I firmly strongly believe Rachel was Santee born on the banks of what's now Marion lake . she may have enrolled with them but wasn't of them . there was a strong likelihood that Adam was Cherokee . but did you find Rachel enrolled somewhere ? Or Adam ?

Wow . my grandmother told me Adam was Cherokee but when I couldn't find the singleton name on any rolls I began to suspect he might be from another tribe . interesting .

I was told the Mitchell's were somehow related to Rachel but I'm not sure if it was by marriage or by blood . someone related to Rachel's mother maybe ? I'm really not sure .

santee71: go to www.rootsweb.com webpage. Scroll down left side of page to index of all Search Engines and ...Select it. then in the page that appears, scroll down on the right side of the page until you find Native Americans and click on it. You will next see a search engine. Just type singleton for the Surname and click on search . You will find all the families and /or persons with the surname singleton listed. Click on each surname listing that is Cherokee and see if Adam is one of the members of that family.(he is not listed by himself). it is too bad you don't know who his parents were,as it would make our search easier. I don't understand why he would be fighting for the Rebs in the US Civil war. Are you sure he fought for the Rebs?

There is a strong chance that what my grandmother told me is very true . so far everything that's unfolding has been true . why he would fight for the south is a mystery . being that our bloodlines are mostly matrilineal. I'd be interested in seeing what comes back for Rachel . again thanks.

I'm googling heyward and francenia Davis and there's quite a bit that came back for an obituary for a heyward Davis junior that passed away a few years ago. And I feel like I'm right on top of my Santee ancestry but its very elusive. Smh " frustrating " lol

I know where you're coming from santee71. if you have a library card, you may be able to use one of your library's computers to get free access to Ancestry.com so you can search for your relatives.
