matoopi; I am a little confused about your posting. In particular, do you know what your gr. grandfather's name was? who were your grandparents, who are/were your parents? also pleas provide as much as possible, the birthdates and where born, and death dates and where they died, for your parents, and grand parents. you can contact the NARA to get your gr.gr. grandfather's Heirship papers. contact is: maryfrances.ronan@nara.gov give her his Indian name and English name, tribe he was with, death date. In the meantime I will see what I can find on the family at Devils lake.

matoopi: I can understand where you are coming from. I never got to know my grandparents because they died in Greece a long time ago. I did find a Matohakikte(bear Looking back) who was living with his wife at Devils lake prior to 1910.Louie Garcia told me that his real English name was Bear looks back. I only have access to the Devils lake rolls up to 1908. I don't have access to Ancestry.com,which has the Indian census rolls for 1885 to 1940, but if you have library where you live, they may have free computer Access on line to Ancestry and /or heritage quest. I used the LDS site, www.familysearch.org to find the 1910 US census for your Stephen Brown at Fort Totten. the problem with the US census is they only have the Censuses published up to 1940.So I can't search for Stephen and mary Agnes's children after 1940. Your blood quantum would be as follows, I think; gggrandf. Stephen is 4/4 his son Clarence Edward would be 4/4 his son George Earl would be 1/2 Sioux if George Earl married a non-Sioux,thereefore his daughter, your mother, would be 1/4 Sioux, and You would be 1/8 Sioux, which is not enough for you to enroll at Devils lake.you need to be at least 1/4 devils lake9spirit lake) Sioux to enroll in the tribe. you are better off if you enrollas a Cherokee. I am thinking that your Stephen and Agnes and their children may have been baptized in the catholic or Presbyterian church at Devils lake.St. michaels is the church there at Devils lake. type it in your Search engine, ands ee if you can get contact info. I will see if I can find anything on their children.

Do I understand you correctly that Clarence Edward and his son George Earl lived in Missouri all their lives? the only thing I have found re. Bear Looks Back is that in the 1900 US census for Devils lake Ind. Res., which I just found is that he was born in ND in 1850, his wife toyatenan? was born 1851 in SD,as were her parents. her mother was living with them in this Census, her name was Makanyhonheyewin,b. 1828 in SD as were her parents. the Stephnen Brown I found with wife Agnes is listed as born ND, parents born Minnesota. my colleague searched her Sisseton Records, and could not find anyone with the last name Brown, nor anyone named Tawakonze, or Matohakikte. the indan Census records post 1862 only go from 1885 to 1940. Stephen Brown and family don't show up on any roll until 1909 annuity roll and the 1910 US census for fort totten.where were they prior to 1909?
re. your blood quantum; if your gr.grandmother beatrice was 1/4 Sioux, then your George earl would have inherited 1/2 of her chromosomes, and 1/2 from his father, making George at least 5/8 Sioux. he would then transmit 1/2 of his chromosomes and Martha would have transmitted 1/2 of her chromosomes to your mother. your mother would then transmit 1/2 of her chromosomes and your father ,1/2 of his. if you are 1/2 Sioux then that would be enough for you to apply for enrollment in the spirit lake tribe.you yourself said you were part Cherokee also.
