Bob Brown, Chairman, MMDC, e-mailed me several years ago with some information regarding Chief Keihe (Flies High) and Mazawindagawin (Checkered Iron) Mary Keihe's parents-and Aunt and Uncle to Emily. Keihe formed the Dakota farming community at Lake Calhoun (Eatonville. My notes also say that Emily was originally from Little Crow's village and then from the Lake Calhoun village of the Mdewakaton. Emily was 6 years old when Ehnamani took her to live with Spirit in the Moon (cousin) but was not formally adopted into the family. Emily took the Prescott name nonetheless. Was it customary to go from village to village and also to marry outside your tribal affiliations? I have noticed several Sioux marrying Crow and Ponca???
Keihe and CloudMan were boyhood friedns who grew up together, as I understand it, and according to historians. Louie Garcia in a recent posting indicated that there were 2 persons named CloudMan. the Minn Hist. Soc. only mentions one cloudman in their biographical sheet on him. One of his sons later took his name after the Sioux were evicted from Minnesota.
The Pond Brothers mention only one Cloudman whose band was at Lake Calhoun and also at lake Harriet. According to Anderson, author of Little Crow,Spokesman for the Sioux, Cloudman and his brothers had a sister., however he did not mention her name.
Mark Diedrich in his book about Old Betsey mentions cloudman having at least 2 daughters.
Re. your question about the Sioux marrying outside their tribe, I would recommend the book The Dakota or Sioux in Minnesota As They Were in 1834, by by Samuel W. Pond.it deals with the sociology ,and Customs of the Sioux back then. I have noticed instances, recorded in Tribal censuses prior to 1940, of Dakota Sioux marrying members of non-Sioux Tribes, but how frequent ly this occurred i couldn't tell you, because I don't know. Chief Wapahasha I, his sister and a brother were half Chippewa, for example.Old Betsey's mother , was said to have been a Chippewa who was capturedby the Dakota Sioux and later married a Dakota sioux warrior, according to Mark Diedrich in his biography of Old Betsey.

Good day to all. In my research I thought that Emily P. Cantley's parents died of the smallpox when she was six years old and that is how she came to be adopted by her cousin Mary Prescott (Spirit of the Moon). From reading above it says that Mary was not the daughter to Cloudman but the daughter to one of his friends, Keihee. How does Emily's parents and Mary's come together? And does anyone one have pictures of the family to share? I have not seen any! Another question. In talking to some elders, they thought that with the spelling of (the native) names in the family that there might be a mix of both Dakota-Santee and Lakota-Sisseton in the family. Is this correct?

The information I have states that when Emily was six years old her brother Ehnamani took her to live with her cousin, Spirit-in-the-moon and husband Philander Prescott. I do not have enough primary resources to verify how Mary and Emily are related-especially with the age difference between them. It does seem feasible that they could be related as half-relations (half-brother, half-cousin, etc.)
My email is now email@example.com I have ordered, read a few good books I'd like to recommend," History of the Santee Sioux" by Roy w. Meyer, and "Indian Chiefs of Southern Minnesota" by Thomas Hughes. I am looking for any documents written by Mr. Williamson as it is noted in my paperwork that my grandfather's people are discussed in this publication?, book?, article?, or journal?.
I never expected researching my grandfather's people would be easy but, I certainly didn't expect it to be this difficult. I appreciate the information that I read on Facebook, that has helped a lot. Thank you for your time. Any information regarding Prescott, Cantley, Dunsmore, Morris, Rose will be greatly appreciated. Happy 2017!!!
Respectfully submitted, Elizabeth Collins
