This is my first message and I am looking to find out information on my g-g-g grandmother Emily Prescott Cantley(Anpodutawin). She is listed on the Mdewakanton band roll. She was adopted at the age of 6 by her cousin Mary Prescott who was married to Philander Prescott. Emily's brother is Artemus Ehnamani. Mary(her cousin) is the daughter of Cloudman(Uncle to Emily). I am not sure but have been told that Emily's parents died during the smallpox break out. I was trying to find out which one, Emily's mother or father, was Cloudman's sibling. I do not have much information on Emily and no pictures of family at that time. If anyone has time and knows the answers please let me know.
This Emily must have been a step sister to Artemus. In the informatin I have Artemus sisters are Rdahnihdewin (Maggie),Ohatekogewin (Sophia), Candisotawin and Hnpaohdinapewin, mother to these children are Mahpiyasawin, Georges's second wife. Georges first wife was the sister to Mahpiyasawin and her name was Miniyokasnasnawin and they had the following children - Wakanhdiyotankakewin, John Kawinge Henry, Wasupeta, Tahupadutawin (Kate), Wacangawin (Sophia) and Wicihdezewin.
If anyone has any additional informaiton on this family I would love to get together and share notes.
Hunkpapa, would you happen to have any information on his parents. We are from George Huntkatanka Henry and his first wife Mary Miniyonasnawin and I beleive Artemus is from his second wife. I have never been able to find much on them. Anything you have to offer would be great.

Emily (Anpaodutawin) Prescott-Dunsmore-Cantley (#374 on BIA registry of Mdewakanton and Wahpakoota Bands of Sioux indians)is my g-g-grandmother and sister to Ehnamani (Walks Among), Margaret, and Sophie (Oyate Kagewin. Their parents are Huntka Tanka (Great God of the East) and Mahpigasawin. My great-grandmother is Mary Cantley (#1997), Morris, Rose. I have a couple of "family trees" I have been sent with several tribal and Christian names so research has been a challenge. My grandfather was Adelbert Rose (#1998 on same registry). I would like to know which reservation my relatives were born on. My g-g-Uncle Artemas Ehnamani was born in Redwing. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I also have information on Prescotts, Fraziers, Morris, Cantley, and Dunsmore
We are descendants of Huntkatanka as well. We are from his first wife Miniyoshasnawin. She is supposed to be a sister of his second wife Mahpiyasawin. I would love to see some of the family charts that you have and compare notes for this family. Have you been able to locate who their parents were?
The only information that I can verify is that my grandfather, Adelbert Russell Rose is the son of Mary Agnes Cantley-Morris-Rose, who is the daughter of Emily Prescott-Dunsmore-Cantley and William Hiatt (Hyatt) Cantley. I have been researching for over ten years and have talked with many interesting relatives. The Fraziers (Aileen (Pick) & Will Frazier) and my distant Cantley cousins have helped me tremendously but it's difficult to verify the on-line information. I also have the Woyake Oswasin by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve. I have some questions regarding the lineage recorded as it differs from what the Fraziers tell me and what is printed on my family trees. I have trees from the Fraziers and a gentleman, last name Boots, of Davenport, Iowa. I thought tracing my grandfather's people would be relatively (no pun intended) easy. Boy! Was I mistaken. What is the easiest way to exchange info??? Looking forward to your ideas.
Mary/ Spirit of the Moon Prescott, was not the daughter of CloudMan. but of his friend Keihee.( Ref.: Early pressbyterian Church records From Minnesota, . page 17. Philander and mary were married in June, 1837 by Rev. S.W. Pond) Philander Rrescot's Affidavi ( Evidence of Sioux Half Breed Land Scrips-Lake Pepin 1853-1857)t does not mention an adopted daughter named Emily , but he does mention the nephew of his wife, Louis Dumarce(s/o Francoise Dumarce and the sister of MaryPprescott-deceased) whom they adoped and baptized( Ref; Same Reference as above for the Marriage, but on page18 under heading Births,Baptisms and Deaths of children list includes Louis-adopted son born 1828. He was baptized by the Prescots on Dec. 13, 1846.). Do you have any information on when this Emily was born?It is possible she may have possibly been adopted after the date of the Affidavit, but before the 1862 uprising.
what you could do is scan the information and send it in an Email to Jimmy and ask him if he would upload it to this forum for you.We are very anxious to help you all we can.
addendum: when was your grandfather Adelbert russell rose born and where was he born?

I'm not sure where this is posted but here goes. My g-g-grandmother Emily (Anpadutawin) was born in the fall of 1841. She was the youngest of four children. My g-grandmother Mary Agnes Cantley was born in Shell Lake, WI on 2-8-1885. My grandfather Adelbert Russell Rose has conflicting birth dates that I attribute to his being born on the reservation??? I have 3/9/1908 (which conflicts with birth of half-brother Philander Prescott Morris born 10/30/1907 from one source and 1908 from another) and 3/9/1912. My grandfather was born in Two Harbors, MN and died in July, 1968 in Seattle, WA. Supposedly, my g-g-grandmother Emily's life was recorded by Dr. Williamson in Santee, Nebraska.
Do the experts out there know of the events of 1844 that could account for the passing of Ehnamani's (Artemas Frazier) parents? I too, thought epidemic illness but now I'm not too sure. It could have been tribal raids or war. Any insight would be appreciated.
I don't remember the website address, but it delals with Metis history, and tells off events that occurred. would you please give us your reference source your statementre.Artemus's parents having died of illnes in 1844? Epidemiologically speaking , diseses that were prevalent back them, were tuberculosis, Chollera, smallpox measles, and diptheria to name a few.
just checking on GOOGLE for an epidemic there is frequent references to smallpox starting in the 1830's and coming forward ie George Catlin observing the death of Four Bears after a smallpox epidemic (1844).
1844 Jan, Feb, March - 23 Dakota & Half Breeds are baptized.
1844 - A Metis was killed by a Yanktonai. In retaliation the Metis killed eight Sissetons and Cut Heads of Lake Traverse. The Sisseton and Wahpeton chiefs, Burning Earth, War Eagle who Cries Walking, Thunder Face and Running Walker sent a letter to the Metis leader, Cuthbert Grant: November 14th 1844 Friends, we hang down our heads; our wives mourn, and our children cry… The pipe of peace has not been in our council for the last six days… We are now strangers. The whites are our enemies.. The whites have often been in our power, but we always conveyed them on their journey with glad hearts, and something to eat. Our young men have been killed. They were good warriors; their friends cry. Our hearts are no longer glad. Our faces are not painted. You owe the Sissetons four loaded carts; they were our relations; the half-breeds are white men: the whites always pay well. The four Yankton did not belong to us; but they are dead also. Tell us if we are to be friends or enemies? Is it to be peace or war? Till now our hands have always been white, and our hearts good. We are not frightened; we are yet many and strong. Our bows are good; but we love peace: We are fond of our families. Our hearts were not glad when we left you last; our shot pouches were light; our pipes cold; but yet we love peace. Let your answer make our wives happy and our children smile.
1844 December 8th - A letter from Metis leader Cuthbert Grant replied that the Metis fought in self defense and they had violated no faith and broken no peace. We know you are brave and generous people; but there are bad people among you. In a another letter a Sisseton wrote… You killed my father. I wish him who made me fatherless, should be my father. He was a Sisseton war chief, had a gun and a bow, and been scalped young. His feathers reach the ground.
According to one of Huntkatana's daughters he died 1850 and his first wife ( Miniyokasnasnawin) died 1834, sorry no reference to the second wife. Where was the reference that he died in 1844? I would like to look into this more to make sure we have the correct info.
