Mona, I am so sadened to read your post. I knew it was bad and getting worse out there. I was hoping THe Winona Diversity Foundation got the Utilitiy crews on film shutting power off to members of the community. I have been waiting to see it on the National News, but have not seen anything yet. I will be spreading your story in hopes for some contributions for paying the Utilities for members. My prayers go out to all those members who are in dire straits this year. THank-you Mona for your post. Sara

Tamara, I have 4 box' of stuff for a garage sale(Brat Sale). I am coming up to Sisseton Sunday night. I will be there till Friday. I will bring the Garage Sale stuff up with me.
I think we should bug Warren Buffet in Omaha Nebraska, he owns most of the Utility Companies in the midwest. Maybe he and the Gates Foundation can help Indian Country with Utilities? And also health care. Sara

I heard that yesterday! I am looking forward to meeting you and am going to plan on stopping up and bugging you all at least a day or two. The girls are trying to use the grocery store here to do the brat stand, it is something their softball team used to raise funds so they are familiar with it.
Sound like some good ideas, I am needing some background information on the circumstances there in crow creek, anyone know of a good source of current info to cite? I am needing to read up a bit. ... I am thinking I wish I could do High School history all over again, I would so ace it! -and try harder to maximize my potential, amongst many other things.

I'm also looking for information on Sihahanska or Longfoot. He was my maternal grandmother's grandfather, her name was Bessie Goodvoice. Besides Tukiska or White Shell he had four other children with Cekpawin: Sophia Shaker or Tatiyopawastewin, Sutahedan or Sutahena (my grt. Grandfather), James Long or Dowanhiyayena and Wayagiyotankewin. I have a copy of Cekpawin's probate and Wicanrpiwastewin or Good Star Woman's probate/will (thanks to Tamara) but I'm unable to find a probate on Longfoot. I do know he was a scout from 1864-1865. I called the Yankton Sioux Tribal Enrollment Dept. and spoke to a real nice woman (forgot her name) and she said that Longfoot was also her grandfather and that his name was Peter and that he was the son of War Eagle but now I'm not to sure because the info. on RootsWeb.com lists his dakota name as Waka'eya. Confused! I also have some pictures of him and others found in a book called "The Shindler Catalogue" they were taken when the Yankton delegation visited the president in Washington, D. C. on Feb. 23, 1867. Willing to share what info. I have. My email is kohl_quinn1926@hotmail.com or lois.kohl@venture.com

I left a copy of the Remember Your Relatives books with Diane at Historic Preservation. (I really do need to get them back) She told me she had them ready for me, I just havent gotten over there. In those books you will find more information on Longfoot and War Eagle. I dont think they are the same person though. Anybody know for sure?

War Eagle did indeed have a son named Peter Longfoot, according to the Reference Librarian I consulted at the Sioux City Library. the sioux City Library does have ome information on chief war eagle, but very little on his descendents. I would suggest you log on to www.rootsweb.com, select the World Connect link and type the following in the search engine: Chief war Eagle Then see the contact information of the person who submitted his tree, for more information.

Here some information on War Eagle and his children: From Sketch of War Eagle, by Constant R. Marks, 1924 available at the Library in Sioux City, IA
Quote "(...) War Eagle was a Santee Sioux Indian, probably born in Wisconsin, or east of there, soon after the American Revolution, about 1785, and had some connection with the War of 1812. He died in 1851. He was said to be of the Sioux Tribe in Wisconsin, called Warpetourvan, also Santee.
He had but one wife (Mazakirawin), who outlived him twenty-four years, dying in 1875, and his sixth son and child who died in 1916, age 81, was born in 1835, and his second child, Blazing Cloud, and the fifth, Dawn, were wives of Theophile Bruguier, who first came to the Missouri River in the fall of 1835, and probably married one or both of these Indian girls within two or three years after that date. (...) Mr. J.C.C. Hoskins, in wirting of War Eagle, and who probably spoke from some definite information from Theophile Bruguier, gave his age at his death as sixty-five years. We may give the year of his birth as 1785, which would correspond to his brobable age at the time of his marriage and birth of his children, and the related fact that he came to the Missouri River after his marriage, and while he was a young man, and before 1830. Fort Vermillion was a trading post before 1835, and is reported to have been built about 1830 by William Dickson, and was in a bend of the Missouri River above Elk Point, southeast of the present town of Vermillion (...) His (War Eagle's) Indian name has been spelled in English in various ways, Hurjaueka-Wahmedawahkee, known as Little Eagle after he joined the Yankton Tribe, also called Ruyanike, which means Bald Eagle. He was a very tall man, straight as an arrow. In early days in Sioux City, whites understood War Eagle as Indian name and spelled Wauregan. The name War Eagle seems to have been given him by the whites. There is no record or tradition in the family of any particular Indian battles he had been engaged in, except the fact that he had participated in his early years in such engagements. (...) He married a Santee Sioux girl, in Minnesota, when a young man and came with his wife and some of his children to the Missouri river and had been adopted into the Yankton Sioux tribe. There had always been much intermarrying between these tribes and such changes of tribal affiliation were common. It is probable that this migration was influenced by a like move on the part of his and his wife's relatives. (...) War Eagle's life was evidently much influenced by his relationship to and connection with prominent Indian Chiefs and white men who had taken Indian wives. The most noted white man amont them was Col. Robert Dickson, an educated Englishman, who came to the upper Mississippi river below St. Paul about 1798. (...) Colonel Dickson married an Indian wife, she was of the Cut Head band of Yankton Sioux, a sister of Red Thunder and Shappa, chiefs of that tribe, and she was the aunt of Waneta, sometimes spelled Wanotan, son of Shappa, who later was a most famous leading chief of the Sioux Nation. His wife and these chiefs were cousins of War Eagle. (...) War Eagle had seven children, four girls and three boys. Their names originally in the Indian language were not spelled but pronounced, and represented some idea or object, and in later years, these names were given a spelling to fit the sound and are not always given the same letters. (...) Rev. John W. Cook, a missionary at Greenwood, SD, in 1901, after interviewing Longfoot, War Eagle's son, and others, wrote to D.A. Magee, of Sioux City, giving the names of War Eagle's children and some information concerning them. Evidently, it was not always easy to translate into English the meaning of the indian words, though there is a similarity of idea and English spelling, to that, given by Mrs. Conger and her daughter, Mrs. Bonnin.
1. The oldest was a daughter, called Iron Shaker Mazayus-Kanskanskanwin, or Shaking Iron, Mazakanwin. She lived to be about 80 years old, and died, leaving three children, two boys and one girl. She was baptized as Elizabeth, by Rev. J.P. Williamson. 2 Fires the Cloud, or Blazing, a daughter, Maripiya Kaidewin, she married T. Bruguier, and had four children. She died in 1858 at the mouth of the Sioux and was buried near her father. 3. Red Gun, Tamaza Kanduta, he died at Yankton, S.D. after 1901, leaving no children 4. A girl, Lies down all-a-jingle, Snayankdiwankewin. It seems by Indian custom Bruguier took two of the girls as wifes, but did not claim this one, and she married Henry Ayotte, Bruguier's partner, and she and her husband died, and the surviving children died young, and are buried near War Eagle. 5. A girl, Dawn, Anpao. She married Theophile Bruguier and had nine children, and died in 1860, at the mouth of the Sioux at their home and was buried beside her father. 6. Peter Longfoot, Wakaseya, born about 1835, died at Greenwood, S.D. in 1916. He was a tall man, said much to resemble his father. His picture taken in his later years is in existence; a copy is held by the Sioux Academy of Science. He had one son living in 1922, at Greenwood, S.D. His name is Andrew War Eagle. 7. The youngest child of War Eagle, a son, was Doubleworth, Nonpaikdawa. He died leaving a son who is also dead, leavin three surviving children, two boys and one girl, Joshua Obed and Maggie. In 1922 there were living five children of Theophile Bruguier by his two wives, daughters of War Eagle. Their names are Rose, Julia, Salena, Eugene and Samuel." End Quote
Wish you all Happy Holidays

1. ridgerunner Wrote I've found out that my grandfather, Bernard Alvin Lebeau's greatgrandmother is Mahpiyailewin (Blazing Cloud). I cannot tell if she is on the 1886 or 1889 census. But her sister, Tamazawin is on both of them. Tamazawin is married to Jacob Otherday and they have a son named Thomas Otherday. At the time of the census taking they had a grandson or nephew named Charles Taope living with them. I need help in determining if Mahpiyailewin is located somewhere on the census possibly spelled differently. I thank and I pray for good blessing to my cousin Rocklyn Lebeau for helping me to know this. Also what does the asterisk by Tamazawin and others on the census mean? Can anyone out there please let me know. Thank you
