deerclan: One place to look would be the Land records for Buffalo County South Dakota. Buffalo County GenWeb may also be of some help to you also(type in Buffalo County SD Gen Web in your Search Engine). I will see what I can find on my end. At this time I don't have any Carpenters in my Cross index, and i don't have any listed in the 1917 McGloughlin Roll.

deerclan1, Yellow Man is listed on my Grandmothers probate papers. And his son Jay Carpenter is my Great Grandfather. I have probate papers on Lucy Carpenter as well. The probate papers list her parents, sibs , husbands. You can contact me at any time if you need any of this info. Sandy H.

deerclan1: I looked high and low at Ancestry.com for the name Skunk Robe, but came up with zilch. there are oodlesof people with last name of Robe, and lots with the surname Skunk, and people with the names of other animals+Robe for their name, but no skunk Robe.

Hello, Manka is skunk in Dakota Sina is robe in Dakota
Sinamanka - sheena mahnka is I think the way to pronounce it. Maybe look for it to be spelled very close to that in older records maybe.

i found him on the 1886 census for crow creek...they wrote it MA-KAN-SI-NA indian name and SKUNK ROBE english name and listed him as 81 years old with his son ISAAC CARPENTER age 24, and that matches the info i had on the son.

thanks...if you look up on that census i sent you there is a JAY YELLOWMAN, he is also known as JAY CARPENTER the son of YELLOW MAN ( the second son in the family named yellow man). YELLOW MAN is the brother of LUCY CARPENTER and VISIBLE LIGHTNING who is also called EMMA LIGHTNING WOMAN. they are all the children of 4 CLOUD and WICOSAYATAPI or KING. if you would like the other brothers and sisters names, i can list them.

deerclan1: I tried calling you this morning, but got your answering machine. I got the copyof the 1886 Crow Creek Census you sent yesterday, and used the data on it to go back to ancestry and search again. I will send you what I found by snail mail. There are High Bearks in Dewey County, So. Dakota I also found some TwoCrows(spelled Twocrow) in Shannon County, S.Dakota. I suspect that the TwoCrows( Winnebago Siouxs) originated in Wisconsin, some migrated to South Dakota, someto Nebraska, and others possibly to Minnesota. there are a lot of TwoCrows who originated from Wisconsin, so that would be a place for you to look.I still was not able to find Lucy's sister Elizabeth by her married name,, let alone her madien name, sorry. Ancestry did not have anything on the Skunk Robe surname. I suggest you search the Earlier Crow Creek Censuses for him.
