Here is a small mention of him also...
The first organized Christian gathering was at Fort Snelling in 1823. In 1834, missionaries Samuel and Gideon Pond received permission from Major Lawrence Taliaferro, who was the Indian agent at Fort Snelling, to work with a Dakota band that summered next to Lakes Calhoun and Harriet. The Pond brothers worked with chief Cloud Man and his community to teach new farming techniques. In 1834, Jedediah D. Stevens, a missionary from New York, with the assistance of the Pond brothers, erected a school for the young native children near Lake Harriet and had hopes of converting them to Christianity. Work at Lake Harriet was distinctively missionary and never advanced to any form of formal organization. However, Stevens did serve as pastor at the Fort Snelling Presbyterian Church. In 1840, Rev. Samuel Pond became the minister at Fort Snelling; and, in 1849, his brother Gideon reorganized the church and it became known as the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. In 1862, the name was changed to the First Presbyterian Church of Minnesota and it was located near Nineteenth and Portland. In the meantime, Rev. Gideon Pond had also been holding church services at Colonel John Stevens' home. The two churches merged in 1865 and held services until 1952.

Eastman was born in a buffalo hide tipi near Redwood Falls, Minnesota, in the winter of 1858. At birth, he was named “Hakadah”, meaning “the pitiful last,” because he was the last of his three brothers and one sister, and his mother died shortly after his birth. She had been the granddaughter of the Sioux chief Cloud Man and the daughter of Stands Sacred and a well-known army officer, Seth Eastman.
These were still the days of nomadic bands of Plains Indians living in relative isolation from the white settlers who were invading their traditional lands.
In his early youth, he received the name Ohiyesa, meaning "the Winner."

a while back at the MSHS i read in one of g. ponds accounts that his name was mahpiyawicasa and he became a farmer and had one of the best corn crops around all because he didn't want his band to go hungry. before this his men were out hunting and got caught in a blizzard and they had to spend 3 or 4 days under robes out in the plains. while he was laying there he thought to himself the buffalo are disappearing and i will not put my people through these hard winters, he became a christian & farmer. this is what i remember reading about mahpiya wicasa through gideon ponds writings. i was looking for a clue to see if maybe my relative mahpiya shunka was from his band. this is what i remember.

:)Thanks much everyone for your efforts. the information I have on Cloudman was that he had 4 brothers. The oldest was killed in a brawl. His other brothers were Fearful Face,Eagle Help, and Paul MazaKaotaman. Cloudman was associated with the Common Dog village clan. the principle man of the Brush Village clan, was Walking Spirit.cloudman's sister was taken in marriage by a nephew of Walking Spirit. I found his name , when I was cleaning up my little notebook: Mahpiya Wichastcha.

Re: Cloudman's Indian name, is Mahpiyawicasta. There were two Cloudman's. The first helped found the Lake Calhoun village in 1830. He was Mdewakanton, and my GGgrandfather. He married Canpadutawin, Red Cherry Woman, and they had children Anpetuinajinwin, who had a child with Lawrence Taliaferro, named Mary.. Another daughter Hanyetukihnayewin married Daniel Lamont, nonIndian, child Jane LaMont. A son Hupacokamaza, rest unknown. Another daughter Wakinajinwin, married Seth Eastman, child Nancy. Another son John Weston, married Mary, children Elizabeth and Phillip. Finally my Ggrandfather David Weston married Margaret Culbertson, child Amos. Other children from previous marriages: Samuel Weston, Edward Weston, Lizzie and Moses Culbertson.
The other Cloudman was a Wahpeton leader with sons Ecetukiya and Soloman Two Stars.

Hello smyers, Would you know anything about Margaret Culbertson's parents or if she had a sister named Julia? Daniel Weston(Kinyanhiyaye) married Julia Culbertson(Tateaihdakewin). Julia's parents names were Alexander Culbertson(frenchman) and Mahpiyahezewin. I'm looking for Mahpiyahezewin's english name or anything you might have on her.
Thanks, Debbie

Debbie, We know Margaret Culbertson had two(?) sisters, one married into the Lovejoy family. We are not sure the name of their father. We were told he was Culbertson and French, does Culbertson sound French? There is a book on Alexander Culbertson, Frontier Diplomats by Lesley Wischman, nowhere does it mention having these three daughters in this area. However it does mention his children with with native women out west, but that he was in the Minnesota area in the early 1830's. This Culbertson came from Pennsylvania. You're right her mother's name was Mahpiyahezewin, unknown what english name she took. We are still searching for info Margaret and her father also. Sorry I couldn't help you, will post if we find anything. Bye!
