I would like to know more about Iron Elk's/ Hehakamaza family. I think he had a younger sister or a daughter named Mary. Mary eventually became Mary Voice/Ahotonna . There is a Mary Ahotonna -Hapan Ahotonna that wed Tasso Chaske on Jan 28th 1877 at Santee. I can not find much on Tasso Chaske or Chaske Tasso. Mary gives her mothers name at least twice in census records as Anpetuokiyewin. I noticed a posting the other day that had Iron Elks probate or family tree with Anpetuokiyewin and Mary Thornton. Several months ago I saw a family tree chart Becky Red Earth made and she also had Iron Elk above Mary THornton, as either a brother or Uncle ? I can't remember. Today I looked up Iron Elk in the Book, Through Dakota Eyes. It gives his sisters names as Hapanna(second daughter) who helped hide some of the Campbell family, and another sister Blue Eyes who also helped hide and guard the Campbells.. Blue Eyes had a son Chattan it says, It mentions Chattan having brothers... Chaska and Hapan and he along with Iron Elk and other cousins guarded many whites to safety. It mentions those men all being related to Scott Campbell. They were not recognized for there help and each was tried and convicted of atrocities on the whites in 1862 and sent to Davenports Camp McClellan Stockade. Iron Elk says his sister is Hapanna is this the same Hapan (Mary Ahotonna Tasso Thornton). Mary Thornton always gives her birth as 1840. Iron Elk was born 1820's I think. So if she is called Hapanna meaning 2nd born if a girl surely there would be more kids in between Iron Elk in the 1820's and Mary Thornton in 1840. So maybe Mary Thorntons mother was Iron Elks sister. Well I am off to play some Euchre(?) cards with my inlaws, they make me laugh so much my cheeks always hurt by the time I leave. Sara

Hi Sara. I will get the heirship papers sent off to this week end. I was slow on getting the copies. It lists Iron Elks sisters as Hapan and Anpetuokiyewing. In talking with Hermin we noticed that they are twins. The papers list all of the brothers and sisters children and thier children but no information on spouses. The brothers are Huntakaduta and Tacankuduta. Could you send me a note with your address?
Thanks
Dawn

Dawn: Anpetuokiyewin was the mother of Mary Thornton aka hogandutawin. Mary Thornton was married twice: Her first spouse was Ahotonna. Her second spouse was Tasso Chaske married Ahotonna.
If you look in the 1902 Register of Santee Indian Families, Ahotonna is a male.
I wonder why the Santee Marriage Register, lists Tasso Chaske marrying Hapan, and then Chaske marrying Mary(Thornton) Ahotonna on the same date, Jan 28, 1877? If your assumption is correct, then Mary Thornton went by two Indian names: Hapan, and Hogandutawin, which would make sense to me, if someone would show me the documentation.

Re. Richard Allen, son of Iron Elk's broter Hurstkaduta:
When his father Hurstkaduta died, Richard Allen was adopted by his uncle, Iron Elk and his wife Ellen. Richard's spouse was Josephine aka Wakdgamin(born 1829). They filed a claim in 1871 NE of Egan,S.D, near Flandreau, as members of the "Flandreau colony>" their son Samuel was born near what is now Madison, in 1869.
Samuel Allen married Fannie Cavender(born 1873). She was Julia Cavendar's aunt. Their children were: Nina Ray- w/o Howard Kitto from Santee. They were maried in 1926//
Victoria a noted Mezzo Soprano
May, w/o George Eastman. They had the following children: Ray Allen- married Luverne Redwing on Sept 5, 1932. Caroline aka Mrs Redearth. She went to Sisseton after her marriage; she is now deceased. there. George Allen-was married to Marie Lawrence on Jan 1, 1942.
Richard Keith Wakeman, grandson of Richard Allen, was born feb. 9, 1923. He is a very well known person in South Dakota. He married Beverly Redwing, a granddaughter of John W. Redwing, on May 9, 1950. their children are: Richard Keith, Jr.; Sandra, Lee, and Gary Pryce.
Reference:Moody County enterprise Centennial Edition, 1969. this reference does not say who Richard Keith Wakeman's parents were. Ver-r-r-ry interesting, as Colonel Klink would say.

Good morning. William Thornton always gives his mother as Mary Thornton and his father as Ahotonna/ Thomas Voice Mary Thornton always gives her dakota name as Hogan Duta win - Red Fish Woman. Mary always lists her mother as Anpetu okiye win I think OKIYE should be OKIYA. In looking over the age of William Thornton he was born about late 1878 early 1879. his brother Henry born about 1883. They both give Ahotonna as there father, but Tasso Caske and a Mary Ahotonna are married in Jan 1877. This makes me think that it was a different Mary Ahotonna that wed Tasoo. Never Mind. Crap.

Sara and Hermin send me your address and I will send you the papers. The papers list Anpetuckiyewin as Mary Thornton's mother. Anpetuckiyewin is the sister to Iron Elk. There is another sister listed as Hapan. Both Anpetuckiyewin and Hapan are the same age. The child listed for Hapan is a Nancy (Mrs Henry Trudell). The other children for Anpetuckiyewin are Caske (Oliver Moore), Mahpiyahdianajin, Tunkantoiciye (Bluestone) and Nancy Ford.

::)Sara: don't say crap. and don't get frustrated. In the 1884 Santee Census, it doesn't list Ahotonna as head of the family, so he had died some time before that census. and in the 1902 Reg. of Santee Ind. Fam., Mary thornton is listed as a widow. Is it possible that Ahotonna and Mary Hogan Duta Win Ahotonna might have had a daughter named Mary? For one thing, we don't know when she and Ahotonna were married, which would help us, clear this up. We also don't know when Ahotonna died. Plus, I can't find anything about this Tasso Chaske either, at either Ancestry or my other web sites that I haunt for genealogical data. And I have even tried reversing his name and come up nada. Finally, I don't believe the civil authorities and the church would allow a man to marry two different women at the same time; the same official is listed as the one who married this Chaske to the two women. The other problem is that there may have been more than one Hapan in Santee back then. Personally, given these qualifiers,I would have to conclude that Mary Hogandutawin, after Ahotonna died, never remarried, and agree with you Sara, this Mary Ahotonna is another woman and not our Mary Thornton.

That Jane Grey, aka Cekpawin (Twin) must be the one who married Joseph Paypay.and she is also listed on the 1902 Reg. of Santee Indian Families, as the mother of Samuel Stone. maybe I can find out somethng more about her at Ancestry.

Sara: You must have ESP. I have been mulling over the surname Thornton and wondering how Mary Hogan Duta Win got the surname Thornton. And I said to myself,"Self, I'll bet Sara has the answer to this poser". And of course 'self' didn't answer me back. This is called having an intelligent conversation. ha haha Seriously though , I went through the 1902 Census and ran across Adam Elk,aka Pahamaza age 37, which would have him being born around 1864,possibly at Crow Creek. It lists his parents as Tunkantoiciye-dead, and Kapopewin-dead. He married Jane Stone Jan 15, 1896 at Santee with Rev. Chas. Stroh Officiating.(Santee Marr. Reg.).

Sara are the 3 wifes listed of Huntkaduta or his father Canhdeskamani. I just want to make sure I have it right.
Did it list anything about Huntkaduta's children. I am interested in his daughter Hapan, who had a daughter named Hapan who is the mother to Sam Sully.

Sara,Hermin,Dawn, Is it possible that the names Aupetuokiyewin that you're talking about and Aupetuiyotkewin could be the same person with one of the spellings being wrong? In the 1902 census it has Aupetuiyotkewin-dead and Johnson Redowl being the parents of Lucy Redowl. Just wondering if they could be one and the same or not.
Thanks, Debbie

On the 1887 Santee Cesus it lists Pahamaza man adam elk number 743 living with his grandmother Julia Oldman. In Julia Oldman's heirship papers it list him as Adam Bluestone (illigetimate child) and his mother is Julia Oldman's daughter Mahpiyakepopewin, so she must have also used the name of Kepopewin which is just leaving off the Mahpiya at the begining. She died 1864 or 1866. She was married to John Kawing Henry and he was in prison when she had Adam with Tunkantoiciye. When John was released he married her sister Mary Itoklyewing Henry.

:DDawn: thank you for the information. I will update Adam's card file and Julia's card files. I can't remember if I sent you the data on Julia from the 1910 Census for Santee,Knox,Ne: It lists Julia at age 94 years of age;she and her parents born Minn.; Daughter-Mary Age 57, born Nebraska, and Grandson-John Henry at Age 24 years, born Nebraska.
Then Mary akaitokiyewing, would be the sister that married John Henry when he was released from prison.
I am sorry, my card file on Julia only lists her parents, a spouse, Tamazakan, and Tohocokaduta as her son. From her age listed on the 1902 Reg. Santee Ind. Fam., I estimated Julia was born @1816 in Minnesota.
How is John Oldman related to Julia Oldman? The only information I could find on the Rev. Iron OldMan aka Wicahincamaza aka Joseph W. Graham, was what I found at that web site found in the booklet,"an Experiment of Faith" re. the establishment of the settlement and the history of the Episcopal church at Flandreau,SD. I would agree with you, if you concluded that he too was related to Julia Oldman in some way.
I just noticed, in the appendix to the above mentioned booklet, the names Oliver and Grace Moore on the list of Missionaries sent out by the Church. I wonder if this Oliver could be the son of Anpetuokiyewin?
