Wow! Can you give me a little background on this? I love to see the things I would have never found myself or even thought to look for. My older brother has offered to make a trip to the MHS for me for the GreyCloud file so I am trying to choose carefully what I might ask him to get besides that.

Tamara,
this list is in a small collection. there is nothing more to it, however there is a description of a book that Eliza Wells had kept. I did not see it in her file unfortunately. The men listed had gone to the Black Hills, not sure if they were scouts or what.

You forgot to mention the still (yet threatened) beauty of the sacred paha sapa. Bear Butte, in its pristine sacred stature, is presently being threatened by the undending influx of the money greed machine which seeks to engulf the totality of the physical arena around the sacred mountain....the people are trying to fight back the best we can. However, we need a national outcry that may resonate with those individuals that may actually have souls, that may cause those people to step back and think about the reality of what is happening to the area around one of the true chosen spots where you can feel the Great Spirit wence you tread upon that ground and are honored enoughed to see from the view of the eagles upon the eastern gateway of the sacred hills. No words can describe climbing, ascending, and experiencing the slopes of the great mount. The customs are unspoken yet undeniable. If you and your loved ones take the journey to the top or within the cradling strength of her interior ridges, you too will know that the encroachment is unneeded, greedy and unhealthy for mankind. You can speak your piece and your own truth on the various websites that are available..... but it is important to speak out. Hypocrisy has spoken out enough lately to allow the encroachment. Protection is needed and our voices combined can yet be heard. She cannot speak up for herself as a sanctuary.......She needs us to protect her....Mother Earth is worth protecting and Bear Butte is one of the last vestiges of soulful connection as a site, that still exist. Please help us help her. email or write and send your concerns over this issue.....maybe our comb ined voices will convince enough minds and souls that think the same way, that it will make a difference in the land of greed and money.

hey that was very nice to see...how can the people help? I got an idea and I have noticed that when a situation comes like this, the reaction I see is slow then some talk like they are ready for war, but then they don't fallow through. If this has been done then don't do it.
"jazzdog" get your mailing address on here, so we can send you signed statements that we the people being Dakota, Lakota, Nakota are wanting the desecration of the Black Hills to stop. I also even though I am a mix blood feel that this sneaking around buying or giving these whites land permits to build saloons and what ever else they do is down right biased against the SIOUX THAT THEY SAY ARE THE RIGHTFUL OWNERS. Maybe some one should get 7 lawyers and take this to court as a "DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT." Yes I know there are several things to consider here in this case certain things have to be looked at in the complaint (s). I don't know, any way give us your mailing address...I would love to send you a statement on the Black Hills. I hope that this is helpful for your cause?
What is your address jazzdog?

I will send my address if you dont have it already. I want to help and know that my Sisseton relations are concerned about Bear Butte as well. My uncle says he will come and camp this summer and bring his tipi. Myself, I would like to try to collect personal funds to try to assist those that are travelling and try to feed people who come. I have send the latest statements to the Sisseton Newspaper and I know they carry the story. I was very disturbed with the latest Rapid City Journal story that gave the impression of potential violence by those attending the most recent meeting in Meade County. They also painted Nick in a negative agressive way and dont seem to see or write about the infinite amout of respect shown by such young men to elders and to the people. The young men I have met that lead these things are powerful and strong in many ways but not aggressive in the manner in which the stereotyping non-indian/non-understanding community are now picturing them to be. I wish a good regular writer would write some sunday large column on the issue and sit down interview the voices of this. speak with families that live with native spirituality and see the manner in which they live their lives. If they knew a little more about the teachings, they might see how appalling the picture of the bar owner sitting on a bike with a woman's "chest" in his face is, when the spiritual leaders that teach my young son, teach him respect for women, mothers and grandmothers, sisters and girlfriends or wives.

The lists from Wells File.
The 1873 list is a list of Santee Agency Dakota that where hand picked by Gen Custer to scout for them on the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition, it was from April -October 1873 they served 6 months. This expedition had over 1000 people on it, the U.S. Army guarded the Railroad survey crew on this expedition. A fight at Pompey Pillar in MT in August was the only fighting this expedition saw. On the other side of the River was Sitting Bull, Gall, Crazy Horse and many many more. They shouted back and forth across the river to Custers Scouts.

I Am a mediocre typist.....I have had my last three attempts to post, apparently, erased, because I have clumisly hit the wrong key in my discourse, so I am typing this messege one finger at a time....do not be fooled by any attorney promising you a certain outcome..no ethical attorney can ever promise a sure outcome....the problem surfaces with whether an attorney or law firm has apotential or actual conflict of interest inrepresenting a client or multiple clients. I do not know if the people or potential lineal descendants and their families know that eac h and every one of the "people" as a potential "plaintiff" or 'LINEAL DESCENDANT" knows that the present firms are only representing those individuals and individual families that satisfy "their", or "our" requirements for lineal descent, despite the fact that many of the individuals that presently makeup the tribes in Minnesota have little or unvarifiable degrees of American Indian (Mdewakanton, Dakota, Lakota, etc.) blood or blood quantum. Unfortunately, our people has been measured so distinctly and uniquely, by the fact that we have "Indian" or "Native American" blood in our veins. If the true lineal descendants and their children are to be the subject of denial and scorn in the face of history, then history and this process, does not know what is about to justifiably hit them.
I personally do not care whose toes I or my Family may step on in our quest to know who we are and where we have been......in fact, it motivates me further the more obstacles that are thrown at our feet....if mere humans decide issues of unqualified history in favor of some versus others, a human soul could only hope that greed and an attitude of exclusivity did not prevail in the decisionmaking apparatus. There are things that are probably not comfortable for the present antagonists to consider, but because of their present position, it is screaming to be brought out in the light of day. All of those that are truly deserving as lineal descendants, would surely be accepted lovingly by those that have for so long been the beneficiaries of being Mdewakanton or "Indian" in Minnesota, wouldn't they?
Would somebody please let me know if I am wrong or completely off base?
thank you
Jazzdog

Jamie
there are at least two active websites which are up and active on the issue of saving Bear Butte......matopaha.org and defendbearbutte.org......... also, I could personally deliver comments to the Meade County (SD) Commission on this issue if any interested brothers and sisters wanted to email me at zephrl@rushmore.com or to send it to me at P.O. Box 9460, Rapid City, SD 57709. thanks for all the interest and helpful thoughts.
