Hello, I am needing info on Itewayaka and his son Moses Tio Greeley who resided in/near Sisseton c. 1890. We seem to have found the first marriage for our elusive Katie LaCroix/ LaBelle (to Moses) and any help here would be most appreciated! Thank you, Vicky Sorry, it would be helpful if I add what I DO know- Itewayaka had 3 wives- With one he had three children namely, Horace Greeley, Susan Bird and Moses Greeley. Moses Greeley was also married three times. His first wife, Katie LaCroix or Catharine LaCroix (now LaBelle). The second wife of Moses Greeley was Eliza Finley or Starlight. They had a son named Daniel Greeley. The third wife of Moses Greeley was Nancy Isbu or Obogawin. To Moses Greeley and Nancy Isbu, there was born three children, Nora Greeley (now Wanna), daughter, Hapan, son and Emily Greeley who died at age 5 on 4/19/99. To Itewayaka and his wife, Tasin, there were born three children, namely Adam Greeley and Hinman Greeley. To Iteawayaka and Ogotanicuwin, his third wife, there were born two children, Tiaokasin, son, who died in 1891 and Manihiyayewin (or Lily James), daughter, whose death occurred on October 20, 1901. Does anyone know for sure the order of Moses' marriages? The math isn't working on this one, and I am wondering if the list of marriages is out of order? Any Greeleys out there?

Nancy Isbu is found on my family tree as well. Do you see any connection to the LaBlanc family in your papers. I am also interested in the Greeley line. okay.. I am pretty much interested in everything you are! lol
I will pull some papers and post.
Where did you find the marriage? I had seen a birth or baptismal record for Esther LaCroix, daughter of Fred LaCroix but the mothers name isnt viewable. It looked as though her middle name or the name after her first name was Roy.

Hi Tamara, I told you we are all cousins! I have not come across any LaBlanc as far as I can recall. I received some land documents which had the allotment for this Moses Tiyo Greeley. It then says he is married and his wife is Katie LaCroix. Well, after I got up off the floor and "came to", I found a lady who has Itewayaka's probate. I am trying to obtain a copy of this. If you have records of any of Fred's kids and the mother doesn't say "Millie (Mitchell) LaCroix", I would LOVE to see it!!!!!!!! That would be a real "woo woo" moment! Fred and Millie were married in MN in 1873. Esther was born in 1884 in SD. Thanks!

This on an oversized page so I will scan the part I can and show you. Wouldnt you know the part where her name is is "dog eared " over it! This is something that usually only happens to my family searches. I will show you what i can see. I am wondering if Fr Chan in Sisseton might be able to fold that little piece back and tell us what it says.

Good morning Hermin1,
All I know about Esther LaCroix is that she was born to Fred and Millie in 1884 and died on 9-6, 1898. She is buried at Mountain Head cemetery in Marshall County, SD. Her head stone reads-
Esther Ray d. Sept. 6, 1898 Aged 16 years
Lord she was Thine, and not mine own Thou hast not done me wrong I thank thee for the precious loan Afforded me so long.
There is a marker at Mountain Head with the names of 3 children of Fred and Millie who died as children, Esther, Anna and Norra. Louis LaCroix the second has a marker there, as well as lots of other LaCroix, LaBelle, and Itewayaka and his wife. It is an awesome place to visit.

Itewayaka I have found most interesting! I was so excited to find him in my photos of Mountain Head cemetery- the link to the photo is below. 1857- I found Itewayaka on the census for Yellow Medicine. 1865- There is an account of him losing his arm, amputated after a battle- in the book Fort Sisseton by Harold H. Schuler, page 29. 1875- Land allotment in LaBelle township per the list of land documents. His land was two miles north of Mountain Head church according to my old LaBelle township maps, near some Marlows and LaBelles. Both Itewayaka and his wife Tabetha are buried at MountainHead cemetery. The graves for Itewayaka and Tabetha read- 1. Itewayaka One Arm Jim Born 1828 Died 1909 U. S. Scout Fort Sisseton 2. Tabetha Wife of Itewayaka One Arm Jim Born 1834 Died 1916 Something written in Dakotah Mother of Rev. Moses Makey He appears on Sam Brown's list of scouts at Fort Wadsworth. Most of these folks can be found on the Elrod Roll in 1891. Moses Makey appears to be a child of Tabetha, but not Itewayaka. She must have had a previous marriage, and they both had sons named Moses when they married, because Moses Greeley died around 1894. Moses Makey was an elder at MountainHead church. i119.photobucket.com/albums/o134/vickyvalenta/itewayakagrave.jpg
