I am looking for info on Bishop William Hobart Hare @ Niobrara or else where for that matter. I know he took a strong stance for my ancestor Wambdi Tanka and many others that were encountering resistance from Henton, Hinman, and Bishop Whipple for that matter. Folks had there favorite Indian so to speak, or should I say "pets". And treated others with indifference. Hinman was exiled from Dakota Territory after a lengthy Congressional Trial and when many of our people were attempting to return to Minn. they unfortunately encountered him once again. He was able to retain his employment elsewhere though it was reccommended he not be allowed to continue his service. I rarily see mention of Bishop Hare. Especially interested in any communications that may have taken place between Hare and Whipple. Special Agent Oberly may be part of these communications as well as House of Representatives and later Judge J.L. Mc Donald.

I think that he was Episcopalian. I can't guarantee it though. If you need to get into the Dakota church records and see what church he was associated with.

Bishop Hare was from the Episcopal Church. There is/was a Bishop Hare School. My dad went there as well as his Uncle and Cousins.

You might also try the Nebraska Historical Socxiety. they may have some information on him. As for Rev. Hinman, he was falsely accused by one of the Indians at Santee for improper advances towrds his wife, and he was exonerated. Get your facts striaght please.

Whirlwind,
Bishop Hare's records are kept at the Augustana Center of Western Studies. I am trying to figure out a way to get in their and review his records. My Great-great grandpa Isaac Tuttle was his understudy. Bishop Hare was also affiliated with a Bishop Tuttle who took up cause in Wyoming and Montana.
