Outside of Red Wing, MN there is a very small town named Wacouta with a cemetery with the same name...Wacouta Cemetery. We were not able to go through the cemetery but at the Goodhue Co. Museum I asked about it. There was nobody around to give me any info. on the cemetery but they showed me where there was some info. regarding the town. It seems that Red Wing was initially named Wakuta and just a couple miles away there was another town named Wacouta, sounds the same but different spellings. They were both located in Goodhue County. When it came time to choose the county seat, the choices were Wacouta and Wakuta. It was decided that the names were too confusing so the town spelled Wakuta changed it's name to Red Wing and the township was still able to honor the lineage of Santee Red Wing chiefs. Red Wing was then chosen as the county seat of Goodhue County. I hope to go back and find someone locally to give me some historical info. on the Wacouta Cemetery, Wacouta Township and there is also a Wacouta Road. Someday....

I am going to a wedding dance in wabasha this weekend. I will see if there is any place in wabasha that might have info. I have also seen that town and wondered about its' origin. There is a wonderful book store in Wabasha whose owner is knowledgeable on many things like this. She once gave me the name of a local native geneologist. I'll see what I can find an get back to you first of the week! Sunshine
