On my recent trip to South Dakota and Nebraska, I took many tombstone photos, however, for this cemetery, I can't find a name for it. It is behind a church near Lake Andes on the Yankton Reservation. Can anybody help? I think it is an Episcopal Church. This is the church. I found my relative, Rev. Levi Moses Rouillard buried there. We also found the famous author Ella Deloria in this same cemetery. We also found the tombstone for Wakinyan Maza (1810-1869) who I believe was one of the original 300 found guilty during the War. for some reason I can't get this image to load right now.

Sent this to help others looking for names of churches. Also check the first set of Iapi Oaye. It lists all of the churches names from the earlier times. Most likely the cemetery is named after the church.

There is a wonderful lady named Mary at the Sioux Falls Episcopal Diocese. She does not let people look on their own any more, because of the severe deterioration of her records, but she is supposed to have a copy of all of the Episcopal records from that time frame. She prays that someone will donate funds for her to have the records transcribed before they fall apart any more. Sunshine

Does anyone have any idea where one would find the records from the original Holy Faith Episcopal church at Santee, Knox Cty? It does not exist anymore!

I think that the records would most likely be combined with the other Episcopal church records from Santee. South Dakota diocese should have them, unless they were destroyed.
Sioux Valley Genealogical Society
200 West 6th Street
Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57104-6001
Place a query, need a lookup, or just to make a comment: Contact : lisa53john@sio.midco.net They might have the records on microfilm. They do have a lot of church records there.

Here is what I found for cemeteries in Charles Mix County on the South Dakota GenWeb site for Lake Andes. Perhaps it is one of these. I can't find a name for it. It is behind a church near Lake Andes on the Yankton Reservation. Can anybody help? Although all the names are not listed, Wakinyan Waza is listed in this cemetery. It also lists Mary and Philip Deloria, no Ella however. I believe some of these names might be familiar to you though. Charles Mix Co., SD - St. Philip Deacon Cemetery The data in this file was compiled in May 1941 by the WPA Graves Registration Project. This file contains the names of those buried in St. Philip Deacon Cemetery, which is located in White Swan Township, Section 35, T96N R66W, about 8 miles southwest of Lake Andes, SD. The cemetery was founded in 1911. ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/chasmix/cemeteries/st-philip.txtDarkWolfe

I also went to the USD library today. They have a section called the Chilson collection. I found two books from the Hinmans. Samuels' Journal of the uprising and Eleanors story regarding the Crazy Horse story. One can not take books out, but unlike many other places, the lady there is very gracious and will allow us to copy anything. There is a whole list of rules that you have to read and sign before you get to touch the books! Even though the info did not turn out to be pertinent to our serach, I found tears coming to my eyes as I read the books. There were only 125 of Hinmans' Journal ever printed-still on linen paper. It was a sacred experience. I still believe that there HAS TO BE MORE of Hinmans baptismal records someplace! I am going back on Friday of this week to see if they have the Woolworth collection, which I have been told that they did. Again, if I can get anything for anyone, please let me know! I go to Vermillion 3x's/week for my childs' therapy at the hospital. Sunshine!

Thank you so much for volunteering. I would like Levi Francis Trudell's probate, if he has one. He died 24 April 1930 at Santee. Of course, if you happen to run across any other Trudell stuff, I would certainly appreciate it.

I am looking for something in the Chilson collection... coincidentaly thought it would have been at Augustana... didnt get to go there either, by the way. Can I give you a call and beg to search for something for me? or just tell me what they have on Mr Chilson's work? Pleeease pretty please... I am using a tactic that could possibly work on a very loving and kind motherly type... yet knowing that you have probably experienced every tactic imaginable by way of children! (worth a shot anyway... LOL)

HI Sunshine. As you are probably aware by now, here is my answer to your very nice offer. If you find anything on baptisms, or probates, or church records that you believe will help, please get them.
As for myself, I am always looking for more on Wakanhiyayewin, aka Sarah Graham. Pahinsasa, aka Jerry or Jeremiah Campbell, or any other Campbells.
Good luck with your searches and all that you do.
