There is Red Cloud Indian School, Holy Rosary Mission outside of Pine Ridge ~ Our Lady of the Lourdes at Porcupine, and they are both parochial. There is another one and I remember it as Crazy Horse School but now they just say Pine Ridge High School. There is also Little Wound in Kyle, another school in Allen, SD. In Oglala there is the Loneman School, Rockyford School in Rockyford SD, a school at the Seventh Day Adventist Church between Oglala and Pine Ridge. Just east of Pine Ridge there is a grade/middle school called Wolf Creek. There is a Shannon County School in Batesland. Hope this helps.

I live in Springfield, SD (only been here 2 years) and have the phone number for the Springfield Historical Society. They are not open all the time, but by appointment only. I would be happy to go and copy any information you may find that they have and take pictures too if they let me to share. The contact person and number is Marilyn McNeely 605-369-2501. Let me know if I can be of help!!
My email is cmathews@gwtc.net. I don't get to check this site as often as I'd like during the gardening season, so it's best to contact me personally.

Hello, Yes there is an Indian School at Marty~Mount Marty~and we were there a couple years ago looking for info. and it appeared to be a fully functioning school. I know that it used to have a large number of students as boarders as well as a day school. I seem to remember two other Indian Schools with 1 in Ft. Pierre/Pierre (?) and Flandreau (?) and there is St. Josephs Indian Scool in Chamberlain. I ran into a lady at the Mayo Clinic and we struck up a conversation while waiting to get x-rays. She worked at an Indian School and I think it was located in Minnesota I think in the vicinity of Pipestone. I know it was close to the border of South Dakota and Minnesota but I didn't think it was in far enough to be at Morton,

My mother and uncle, Donna and Leonard Mackey attended school in Marty, South Dakota. My mom told us some stories about the awful way they were treated up there.
There is an Indian School in Flandreau. There is a marker on the highway by the Indian Cemetery that tells of the school. It appeared to still be a functioning school, but not sure if it is now open for Native Americans only.

Does anyone know the story of Tekawitha in Sisseton SD. I remember hearing about some family members who had to go there after their mother had died. Was it a school or was it an orphanage? I think the original buldings are still there because I drive by them sometimes but who would have the records. The buildings are now being used as offices of some kind for the tribe there.

There was a children's home there from 1938 until it closed in 1969. It is now the Tekakwitha Fine Arts Center and is located on South 8th Ave. www.sisseton.k12.sd.us/Tourism/FineArtCenter.HTMThere may be records for the children's home at Marquette- www.marquette.edu/library/collections/archives/NativeGuide/Help/IndexT.htmlThere was also a Tekakwitha Hospital on E. Chestnut St. which is now a nursing home, I believe.
