I want everyone out there to know how valuable the dictionaries I have purchased are to me. The first one, AN ENGLISH-DAKOTA DICTIONARY by JOHN P. WILLIAMSON, lists even the forts by name, and many locations, such as Flandreau, and then lists the Dakota name for each. When we are searching we come across many Dakota terms, and without the translation, we are unable to find what we seek. I found four baptisms by stumbling on to the word Wakpaipaksan, and finding out it meant Flandreau. The baptisms were listed in the Iapi Oaye and iI thought the word in front was the name of a church. Imagine my surprise when I found out it is actually a location. The next dictionary, A DAKOTA-ENGLISH DICTIONARY BY STEPHEN R. RIGGS, has even more detail. I was able to find out my ggg.grandfather's Native American name by using this dictionary. So if anyone needs a very crucial addition to their genealogy search, please purchase the pair of books. They are extremely helpful. You can purchase them of E-Bay, Barnes and Noble or many other places. They paid for themselves the first week I had them, because they helped me answer so many questions.
