Wazi: I have notes from the testimony of Nancy Myrick-Wakute-Wapaha re. the estate of one of the Stone family, who was her aunt. I forgot to bring my notebook to the hospital, but will brief you on what I remember from her testimony. NancyMyrick was a Stone. Her mother was Julia Stone and she was the spouse of Hakandisapa. Nancy was the only child of the marriage. Julia Stone and her sister(the aunt whose estate Nancy testified at)had 6 siblings. The only living sibling was Samuel Stone. Hermin did u remember what you was gonna tell me from this probate? Also I came across some information on Charlie, but again misplaced it. As soon as I locate it I will post it. Hopefully we will discover who Charlie and Mary's father was, then we maybe able to locate Tatiyopawastewin, their mother. wazi

Maybe you can find osomething with the information I posted above. But if that was so then why didn't they mention he first husband Tahocokaduta, Ellen, Charlie or Mary in Cekpawin's probate or family history? I was looking at Cekpawin's probate yesterday and highly doubt it. wazi Wazi: I would now have o agree with you, Wazi, that Sophia Shaker was not the Tatiyopawastewin that was the mother of Ellen, w/o Rev. Tuttle, because she was still alive after her mother Cekpawin died. Your Tatiyopawastewin died @ 1870/71.

Wow, this is spooky, Mahpiyawastewin from Sisseton is on my mother in laws heirship, Mahpiyawastewin had 160 acres alloted to her, I located her land the other morning when I was visiting in Sisseton, I did not quite no the connection she had with the family tree. But Samuel Stone is on the family tree. But I was thinking the land was through Joseph Walker another grandfather on the family tree. Maybe not. Does anyone have Mahpiyawaste' probate? That would help alot. Anyway when I told my mother in law this morning about the land she said she recieved a letter a while back saying the land had so many heirs the land reverted to the tribe!!! They had a payment in 1985 for this land, a total of $5.00 each. THe same farmer has been leasing it for the last 30 years I found out. I told her to call the BIA in Aberdeen asap. I was told also the other day that that is illegal to have the land revert back to the tribe. If Samuel Stone was the only heir I need to know so we can get a handle on the heirs. Thanks so much.
Sara; I don't quite understand how you canbetalking about your mother-in-law's Heirship papers, with her still being alive. i was under the impression that the Heirship papers were prepared after the person died.

"this is spooky".... lol Sara nice halloween theme!! I agree that Mahpiyawastewin is interesting but it seems to me there are at least two Mahpiyawastewin and one Mahpiyawaste in sisseton in 1887. #717 Mahpiyawastewin is Single and age 14 no clear family members listed with her #766 Mahpiyawastewin age 43 daughter Hakayetewin age 19 I dont know what the girls name means... Where was her land in sisseton? What district, that I have a map that has lots of notes on it and might be able to tell me something. Tamara: You are so right about this being interesting. I found the information on Julia Stone at www.rootsweb.com at the World Connect Project link. I typed in the name andrew Jackson Myrick and got ainformtion her, her daughter Nancy, and then I clicked on the name Samuel d. Hinman whowas her daughter mary's husband and got his family line as well.

Hi Tamara, The land is in Hart Township east of I29 just at the tail end of Cotton Wood Slough. I was at Dennis' saturday morning and saw a book he had SWST Genearl Hunting Regulations. It has all the maps and lists original alottees in yellow. I saw her name and next to it is the Leesie his name is the same on my mother in laws old lease agreements. She has not seen any money since 1985 and it was $5.95 for her share for the entire year.

I doubt we ever will, wazi. What I would like to know is how Mikey John found out when she died? I had asked him, some time ago but he wouldn't tell me. I wonder if Ellen tuttle's probate would tell us anything? does she have a Probate? I know Rev. John Tuttle, her hubby does. I haven't seen it though. I doubt it would tell us anything. What do you think?

I didnt look for Ellen's probate, silly me...
My Tatiyopawastewin died in 1874 if I am remembering correctly. I will go back and check my records. She died before allotment therefore making it difficult to find her. There is one more Tatiyopawastewin that I found, she is buried in North Dakota. I don't have much more information than a cemetary notation.
wazi
ps there is nothing mentioned in my grandpa John's last will and testament.
Wow this is crazy that I cannot post using my username.......

Wazi: If Tatiyopawastewin hadcome to Santee with the other s from Crow Creek in 1866, she would have been allotted land. I did not find her on the list of people who received land at Santee in1872.

According to the Ft. Snelling Book, Tahocokaduta at Mankato was forced to choose a wife, in 1862. He chose Tatiyopawastewin as his wife. Her brother Wakanhditanka is in Santee. My belief is that she was there also but died. Was allotment at Santee done in 1872? I am not sure, but I have yet to find anything. It would be interesting to find our more on Mary and Charles Stone, since they are listed as Ellen's younger siblings, but not listed in Julia Oldman's records as her grandchildren.

Wazi; Yes land was allotted to them(the people), and the deeds or papers were delivered to them in 1872. However, I did not see Wakanhditanka's name on the Allotment list of those who received the papers on their land in 1872.the Land allotment records are at First Nations Outreach Center in Sioux City. According to an Affidavit attested to by Frank H. Young and B.J. YOung:
Tatiyopawastewin died before 1897.
Tatiopawastewin left as her sole heirs:
Daughter, Ellen Tuttle(w/o Rev. John C. Tuttle)
Brother Wakanhditanka who also died before 1897, leaving as his heirs: Martha maka(dau.),Julia Frenier(dau.), andjesse Ben(son)
Brother Wanhdega who died before 1897, leaving as his heirs a dau. Judith Wakeman who diedJune 6, 1899(her husband predeceased her) and the following children:Abigail hemminger, Solomon Wakeman,Jane Wakeman, Jesse Wakeman, Ida C. Allen and peter alex Wakeman.
Alice Stone, who died 30 Sept. 1910, at the age of 80 years, was also a sibling of Tatiyopawastewin. My understanding from others is that Tatiyopawastewin's english Name was nancy Stone.
I would like to see what documentary proof you have that Charles and Mary Stone were Ellen Tutles younger siblings. Julia Oldman's probate papers definitely do not mention either Charles or Mary Stone as Ellen tuttle's younger siblings.

Nancy Stone eh? I have not heard that but will definitely look into it. My assumptions is that Tatiyopawastewin remarried either at Crow Creek or at Santee. That her spouse had the name Stone. That Ellen took this name when they had to come up with last names. Mary and Charles were children of this marriage. They are much much younger than Ellen. They both die at a young age.
Wakanhditanka went by the last name Ben, from what I have seen. He dies in Santee. If you look at the Santee baptismal and census records he is definitely there.
wazi
ps have u found a Nancy Stone with the name Tatiyopawastewin?

wazi: There is that Sophia shaker, who married Thomas Shaker who was at Crow Creek. she was a daughter of Cekpawin and Sihahahanska, but she was still living in 1903. So that rules her out.then there is the Julia Sully aka Tatiopawastewin,w/o Sam Sully but she was still alive they were living at Crow Creek.after 1897. What we need to do is check out the censuses for Santee and Crow Creek and Santee. No I didn't see her names with Nancy Stone written next to it. I just wrote what others have told me. i have not put this on her file card. i just made a note of it in one of my notebooks. If we knew sometuttle ancestors, maybe they could tellus who she was. she sure is a mystery. there is theEllen Stone who m=was married to amos paypay . Could Charles and Mary have beenher younger siblings?

Could be. The only problem with that would be why weren't they listed with their mother Martha Stone? Or Ellen Stone-Pay Pay-Harlen? Dakota tiyospaye definitely would allow for that to happen. It still does not explain why my grandmother Ellen Tuttle went by Stone.
So I have another question; Did the Martha-Mary Hapstinna mystery get solved? I definitely believe they are two different people. Hermin the Martha Stone you and I have been chatting back and forth about, I have yet to see her use the name Hapstinna.

Wazi: she used the name Hapstin, I believe, in the 1885, and 1890 and 1902 Census. but I have never seen her listed as Mary Stone, or Mary Hapstinna either,as tsunshine is inferring. I have Martha Stone as the daughter of Wakanditanka Ben, and that she was the mother of t Ellen Stone who married Amos Paypay aka Amos Grant. if I understand the Huntkatanka Tree, Tohocokaduta and Tatiyopawastewin had the daughter, Ellen without the word Stone next to her name. I believe Elen's baptismal record reflects the same.

On the 1902 census for Santee it lists Ellen Stone-Paypay-Harlen's mother Makanabdewin (spelling hard to remember) as being dead. This makes it interesting because in 1910 she was listed as a living heir to Alice Stone's estate.
"Wakandhitanka, brother of Alice Stone deceased, who died prior to 1897 leving as his sole heirs, Martha Maka, daughter, aged 51 years: Julia Frenier, daughter aged 38 years: Jesse Ben, son aged 24 years."
I went back looking at the Santee Baptismals, but got tired eyes, so I haven't come across Martha in the books. Her brother Jesse is listed and I am pretty sure I had come across her name. I thought I printed out the document, but am unable to locate it.
So is the Martha Stone I am related to also this Hapstin person sunshine is looking for? Currently I have no proof of that.
