Thanks Hermin,
What is the name of Wozniak's book, any other interesting information in there? I may want a copy.
I have had contact on the Santee Agency Facebook page and asked questions, but no real answers. I will try to write them as you suggest.
Thanks,
Brenda

Hi Herman,
It has been a while since I last posted but have been doing major research. With the info you gave me about wozniak's book....I tracked down the John Fletcher Williams papers he references in this book. The J Fletcher Williams papers contain an interview (listed as a biographic account) with Benjamin A D Young. I found this a the Minnesota Historical Society and ordered it. It is copyrighted and I don't have permission to post, but I can share the information.
His parents were: Stephen Young (Etienne Dyonne or Dionne) a Scotsman who worked as an interpreter...He married a Sioux woman, Hupisto. Hupisto and Wabasha's mother were sisters. The father of these two women was White Elk (Aha Ka Ska)...
Work every penny I spent...now I am trying to find information on White Elk and Hupisto. The article list a sister of Benjamin - Mary...i am trying to track her down to.
Any information on White Elk???
Thanks for your help.
Brenda

Brenda thanks so much for this information. I had been searching for several years ,on and off to find info on Benjamin. Did the papers indicate which chief Wabasha was the son of Hupisto's sister? here is the Email of madrocque who has done an extensive search on the Chiefs Wapahasha9Wabasha) dynasty. I know he would welcome your information as he is updating the tree on the chiefs and their families. here's his email: mad_rocque@comcast.net

So - I think i have found his father...will post more information when I verify. His mothers father was White Elk or Aha-Ka-Ska - Hermin do you have any idea where I can find information about him?? If his mothers sisters was Wabasha's mother it would be likely he was referring to the Wabasha closest to his age (he was born in 1814) since his mother and Wabasha's mother were sisters. Do we know when Wabasha III was born? Or Wabasha II? I found pictures of his children if you want me to post here...I am hoping to find one of Margaret Campbell - his wife's mother..do you know if any photos exist of her? Thanks Brenda Here are some of the artifacts we have handed down in my family

Dear Brenda; welcome back. I did a search for White elk but hit a brick wall. the Wabasha whose mother was the sister of Hupista was Wabasha II.Wabasha I or Red Bonnet; @1720 to 1806. Wabasha II: Died in 1836 at age if 63 yrs, which would put his birth @1750 Wabasha III died at the Santee Agency in 1876.
yes please post the photos you found.
Margaret(Menager)Campbell was Benjamin BAD Young's mother-in-law. His father-in-law was Scott (Antoine Scott) Campbell. Margaret was part Menomonee.
Brenda,i doubt that youwill find a photo of Margaret.
The artifacts are beautiful and pricelsess.

Thanks for the information on Hupisto...So Red Leaf is the Chief Wabasha Benjamin AD Young was cousin to. Here is a photo of Emily Young Womrwood (BAD Young's daughter) her daughter Harriet and Harriet's daughter Grace...My GG Grandma, My G Grandma and My Grandma respectively... Second photo photo of my grandmother wearing a bandolier bag and beads. A few other photos are to large and it won't let me post here...one had Emily, John and Benjamin Joe in the photo...is there somewhere I can send to you to post...I do want to share for any descendants who don't have any photos. Also - where did you get the information on which Wabasha's mother was sister to Hupisto? I have looked at some much research but all the list for the Wabasha line number them differently and birth and death years might be off a couple of years. Thank you so much for this site...I will contribute any information I find and donate any photos etc..for others to help find their ancestors. Brenda

Bebe, here are the links to The chiefs Wapahasha dynasty; i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt240/kouklamu/scan0002-3.jpgi615.photobucket.com/albums/tt240/kouklamu/scan0003-3.jpghttp//:i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt240/kouklamu/scan0004-3.jpg madrocque posts info as a quest. he comes off the laRocque/Rocque branch of the Wabasha lineage. On this website is a discussion of the Wabashas.i am sorry I don't know which section it is under, but MadRocque has devoted years to tracing the lineage of chiefs Wabashaw.he is currently working on updating his work. if you are interested, we have a thread on the Menager/Menagre family, and more on the Wabashas at our other website: mdenney.proboards.comlog in to the website, and go to the third page in the Section Family trees. You will find the info I just mentioned. I have been working with another of the BAD Young-Henriette Campbell descendants since 2005,she lives here in Sioux City,IA where I live. She is from the Rockwood Branch of the Campbells. I will show her the photos you have posted and give her the info on Benjamin BAD Young that you were able to find.

Hermin1,
Don't know if your question got answered but a bandolier bag is a distinctive form created by American Indians in the Great Lakes and Plains regions beginning in the mid-19th century. These large, vividly colored and intricately beaded bags were a central element of men’s formal dress for dances and ceremonies. Wearing two bags at once was a sign of prestige and status.W
We are lucky enough to have 2 handed down through my GG Grandmother...the story goes they belonged to my 3G grandfather and she received them from him. By letters we have from BAD Young to her, we think she might have been his favorite daughter.

Wkanhotain - thank you for you comment on the bandolier bag.
Wkanhotain or Hermin1 - can either of you translate Benjamin AD Young's indian name for me - I have 2 different spellings either Pe-ut-se-du-ta or Paiyuksaduta.
Thanks Brenda

Hello,
I've been working on my family tree for several years. I come from the LaFavor/Flynn/Young branch. My mother always said we were of Native decent, but didn't know enough of the history to tell me. After my research on Ancestry.com found in fact my 5th Great Grandfather is A.D. Benjamin Young. There are a few photographs on Ancestry of the Young's and Flynn's. Upon reviewing the photos, one of which Benjamin Young 1848-1935 is standing with "several important Santee Chiefs and Warriors" I finally found enough information to really prove our connection with the Santee Sioux. The photo states that Benjamin Young was the "Chief of In. Police". There's also a letter from him to a Nephew Burt Roscoe, which gives some more family names including Scott Campbell. I was then able to look at the US Territorial and US Indian Censes and again verify our relation to Benjamin Young. I then discovered the name Paiyuksduta, when searching for more information, I found this website. I would love to save the photos and the obituary posted here, on my family tree on Ancestry, if I have permission.
Sarah
