Looking for this list. Since they were paid as scouts...surely there is records of payment. Anyone know where to look?

This is the details available about the holdings by the NARA on the Sisseton Agency. I am told that everything they have has been copied to the SDHS.
Sisseton Agency Series Title List

I am reading the book...The Dakota Indian Internment at Fort Snelling, 1862-1864. On page 94, it says, "Beginning in February of 1863, "sixty Dakotas and mixed-bloods were scouting for Sibley on the plains of North Dakota. They included His Thunder, Good Thunder, Tapoi, Iron Shielf, Yellow Pigeon Hwok, Indian John and henry Ortly." I am trying to find out who else was part of the "sixty". thanks

Wouldnt that be the list Samuel Brown did? The list I have seen comes from History of the Sisseton Reservation Elijah Blackthunder. I dont know how great the pension records are but every person that was a scout in my family, I have found a pension record for. How about Sibley records or papers? Know you got me curious! ... darn and I had other things I needed to work on! lol The scouts is really a focus of mine and hard to resist.

Re: List of Sixty Dakota (Scouts for Sibley 1863)
This information is in B.I.A. records. I don't remember where I got this paragraph but it looked like something I wanted to look up so I copied it. Maybe if you call NARA they can tell you where to find it. I know it's definately in B.I.A. and not in military records. vmarier
920. LIST OF SIOUX SCOUTS AND SOLDIERS AND HEIRS. 1892. 1 vol. 1 in. Names of Sisseton, Wahpeton, Mdewakanton, and Wahpekute Sioux who served as scouts and soldiers during the Civil War or the Sioux uprising in Minnesota in 1862 and the names and relationships of the heirs of those who were deceased. The persons listed were those considered to be eligible to participate in a payment to be made under a provision of an act of Congress of March 3, 1891 (26 Stat. 1038). The list was prepared by Special Agent Samuel H. Elrod and was approved by the Acting Secretary of the Interior. Arranged by roll number assigned to the scout or soldier. There is an alphabetical name index in the volume. Among the annuity payment rolls (entry 906) there are rolls of names of persons actually paid. There are records concerning applications designated as file no. "3051-92" of the letters received by the Bureau (entry 91). A list of members of the Sisseton, Wahpeton, Mdewakanton, and Wahpekute bands of Dakota Indians who served as scouts or soldiers of the U.S. Army during the 1862 Dakota Conflict and the Civil War, and of their heirs. It was compiled by special agent Samuel H. Elrod to determine their eligibility for annuity payments authorized by an 1891 act of Congress

I have the exact location of this at the Minnesota Historical Society and was told by them (this was years ago) that I would need to come in and copy it in person as they were unable to give me a copy of it via mail. I would need to order it from the NARA. I let this go when I saw the Elrod Roll i think we all have seen since I assumed this was the same thing. Now in looking at your post I am thinking I shouldnt have assumed that. How nice to have it put in front of me again, there is a lesson in this for me. To review old resources and old wants as my knowledge has grown and I can get more from reviewing them now.

The scout list is found on microfilm at the Minnesota Historical Society in St Paul. I have the pages with Thomas Robinson and his heirs on it. There are a few more names on there, too. It is MnHS call number M201.

Are you referring to the Elrod Roll? The only problem I have with the Elrod's list of Scouts is that it was compiled by submissions from former scouts or their families and might be lacking because of it.
Does anyone have an original copy of Samuel Brown's In Captivity? Does anyone know if it shows the list of scouts?

I would like to see the list you have. Would this be the group that went west? I think I have a page of the names of these scanned on my pc at home in rapid city, where the grass is greener, the sun is shinier, and the internet speed is "speedier"!!!... Great information on the pension records, I need to get them.

BUt if it is before WWI you have to use the long form and I thought you still had to pay for it? THat would be cool if we did not have to pay for them. It adds up quick.

Tamara I am thinking that you may be right that Sam Brown's list may be the one that has the Scouts from 1863. There are also some mentioned in the Dakota Sioux Internment at Fort Snelling 1862-1864,and also look in Through Dakota Eyes which also mentions some ofthe scouts.

Re: List of Sixty Scouts www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.htmHow to Request Military Service Records or Prove Military Service: Military personnel records can be used for proving military service, or as a valuable tool in genealogical research. Most veterans and their next-of-kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) and other military and medical records several ways: Cost: Military personnel and health record information is usually free for veterans, next-of-kin, and authorized representatives. If your request involves a service fee, you will be notified as soon as possible. NOTE: Some records (Navy and Marine Corps enlisted personnel pre-1939) are in the process of being accessioned into the National Archives' collection and are no longer considered part of the NPRC, but are now part of the new Archival Programs Division. Standard reproduction charges may apply for copies of these documents. The process for requesting these records remains the same for now. I just posted part of the information. There is an online request form or a form or you can write a letter. vmarier

native Fam. Resource Center in Sioux City has the Elrod list, and the Annuity Payment roll for thescouts. what they don't have and I believe it is on one of the Sisseton Annutiy microfilms, is the Orphan's list with accompanying letters. That is what I would like to find. the number tocall to arrange for copies is 712-252-5902 and ask for Edith Casaday.

I am thinking that the historical society at Browns valley may have that In Captivity you are looking for, or possibly their public library.
