hi this is DeAnn would like a copy of the 1857 sisseton- wahpeton census as in a affidavit it states that james williams and lizzie williams were returning from the sisseton agency , when james williams died july 19 1913 at conde s. dak . just was wondering if james had any relatives on the census there.
Hello 7songhawk, Boy, do I remember being new to this site!! It is a bit overwhelming at first, but it will get easier to find your way around. The census you seek is posted by Jimmy just a couple of posts up. Click on each page and save to your computer if you wish. The scout's lists are posted elsewhere on this site by Denney and Tamara and I will paste them below. The easiest way to find what you are looking for is to use the "search" button at the top of the page. Just remember to change your results to 100 and the days to 700. Happy hunting and welcome to Oyate!

I think we are walking down the same road, as I too have been trying to figure out who Robert Hakewaste's father is and I have him as Mazawasisun (Iron Frenchman). The mother is Tunkan Okiye Win. Robert is the brother to Anna Tatiyopa Ross (1831-1922) who is our ggg mother. IF it is the same person, there is a Wa-shee-tchoon-ma-za, (“Iron French man”,) that signed the 1851 Lake Traversie Treaty. This is what I am trying to track right now. I have had some great help in tracking this (thanks Candy!). Let me know if you find anymore. Thanks, Brokenrope's
Vicky -- I'd like a copy of this list as well. (email@example.com) I have found a couple spellings on "Iron Frenchman" -- Mazawascisun, Maza Wasicun and on the 1851 Lake Traverse de Sioux Treaty there is a Wa-shee-tchoon-ma-za, (“Iron French man”,) who signed the TREATY WITH THE SIOUX—SISSETON AND WAHPETON BANDS, 1851.
Robert HakeWaste and Anna Tatiyopa Ross were Mazawascisun and Tunkan Okiye Win's kids (6 children total).
I think that all the spellings are the one person. Let me know! Thanks, Carol Brokenrope

Through Dakota Eyes. Narrative 4. Charles R. Crawford’s Testimony. Page 118
“Then this man who was with me came toward me. I was standing, holding the horse that I had in the buggy. He told me to hurry up and get home as quickly as possible. I asked him if he recognized either of the two men that he had been talking with. He said, “Yes; one of them is Wa-xi-cun-maza,” meaning Iron French Man, and that he is the son of Ma-rpi-ya-sa-pa,” meaning “Black Cloud….20”
20. Waxicanmaza signed the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851 and the Treaties of 1867 and 1872. He served as an Indian Scout in 1865 and received land on the Sisseton reservation, where he died in 1883; Kappler, comp. and ed., Indian Treaties, 2:590, 959, 1059; Chilson, “Dakota Indian Scout Roster”; U.S. Congress, Sisseton and Wahpeton Sioux Indians, 44th Congress 1st session, 187, H. Doc. 42, p.13.
I do not believe that my Mazawaisum is the same person as "Waxicanmaza" noted above.
I have been trying to find Maza Wasicun or Wasicun Maza, father of Robert Hakewaste for a long time and I also do not think that these two are the same person. Robert was born circa 1828 and the son of Black Cloud sounds as if he is much younger. I did find one Asa Rice listed but he also is much younger. For the father to have been in his 50's or 60's in 1862 would he still be described as the "son of Black Cloud"? Wanbliho
Sorry but I made that kind of confusing. The date of death for Asa Rice Mazawasicun is 6/25/87. The "code"date corresponds to the original report in the "Iape Oyate" Asa's code date is 7/87/27 which means the July 1887 paper page 27. At the top of Appendix D it explains this. I should have added it to the post.
Brokenrope's do u have Robert's family tree that was done by Brill? It shows Mazawasicum as father and Tunkankiyewin as parents of Wacehinskawin who married William Bell and they had George Bell he died w/o issue. Then she Wacehinskawin was married to unknown and had Lucy Whipple, then married to John Powell Non Indian and had Mary Powell. Then Robert Hakewaste and he married Winona Pazi and they had several children and one was my ggrandmother Anna Wilson and Charles Wilson, Robert and Winona had several children but 3 I believe died in small pox epidimic in 1873. Then there was Tatiyopatankawin aka Anna Hakewaste who Married a Ross aka Mazaheka and they had Amos Ross, she was also married to Jacob Eastman and they had Edward Eastman, Anna also married Howard Belland and they had John Ross, then the other daughter of Mazawasicun was Tatewakanhdiwin who married a Wapaha and had Charles Ross, then the looks like 2 more children Males Wasuwakinyan and Tatekokipapi does not show either of them with wifes or children. So now I hope u can understand what i have written as I am not good at the pc stuff at all. I would like to know more about any of them even if a small tidbit. Sisco
