We all sympathize with our friends at the Santee Agency in their present afflictions, and trust the Allwise Father will bring good out of this evil, as we are encouraged to hope from the past history of this people he will do.

The schools are all closed. Even the churches are shut for a time. Guards watch the highways to stop the thoughtless traveler. Waiting on the sick, planning and praying for the stay of the scourge are the order of the day.

I get cold chills every time I read the names of the dead, particularly the children of Robert Hakewaste. I get the feeling that Jacob Wilson's name would have been on that list had he not been born in 1867 rather than before the Uprising. I will pray for all the victims, and for their unborn offspring whom we might have known and loved.
