I came across a page that was given to me with someone else's family papers. It would appear that it is a part of the Santee list of allottments. Am I correct that this was done in 1869? Would a person who shows on this handwritten list with land description and age have a probate in Santee? How do I know if their probate is in Santee or in Winnabago? any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tamara, Yes, the probates are located at the BIA in Winnebago. Good luck there though. I tried recently to obtain one, and after many many months they sent me a packet with a letter stating they don't provide those any more. The packet contained only a pile of printed information about "What is an Indian" and how to trace your heritage. DUH!!! I don't know if one would have better luck going there in person. Anybody know?? Folks used to be able to go to the tribal office at Santee and obtain family cards. I don't know if they do that any more either. It is getting more and more difficult to get documentation. Life used to be so simple! Mail a request, and have your info in a couple of weeks. Oh, how I long for the "good old days"!

Oh, how I long for the "good old days"! thanks jackie and vicky so it sounds like the same old song as with the rest of the BIA offices. i really do understand the reasons why as they were explained to me by the director on my reservation. it just gets hard for those that dont have computer access or the means to purchase copies or travel to the historical societies. tamara
