Greetings all my cousins, I have transcribed the 1885 and 1890 Santee Indian censuses. They are on-line at the following location- ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/_na/1885-1930/ne/santee-sioux/I have also transcribed the Sisseton/ Wahpeton 1891 Elrod Roll, and it should be up soon. I will share the link when it is available on-line. I would like to tell the keepers of this site that this is amazing. It is a wonderful thing you are doing here. Thank you to all of you who are sharing.

That is fantastic!! incredible work and I am sure we all know how much work it must be to accomplish. thank you so much, I am looking forward to the 1891 Elrod Roll. Amazing that I had been thinking how much easier researching a census roll would be if it were transcribed and a person could search a document by name or age, etc.

Hi Jackie, The Elrod Roll is the Annuity payroll for the SW tribe conducted by Samuel Elrod in 1891. It differs from the Scouts list, but it is good to have both, I think. If anyone can open a Works database, leave your email address here and I can email it to you so you don't have to wait for it to be posted on-line.

hi sandy. do you have any baptism records for any south dakota churches other than what we have posted? jackie Those are the only ones that I have access to as well. I haven't gotten anything new on baptismals in quite a while, (since the ones that are on-line). Where else can we go to get baptismals? I have not given up yet, I have been out and about looking in several places, but nothing yet. But, I would like to get my hands on more info, as I'm sure others would too. If I do come across "anything" I will share, I Promise. I had a few leads on some baptismal books. But I am not sure what is going on there. These baptismals seem to be so hard to obtain for some reason. I wonder what is going on with that? LOL Anyway, I better get back to looking and try to find all the hidden areas. Wherever that may be. ;D Take care Jackie, and btw HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY. Hope you had a good one. Later, Sandy

i would love a copy of it as well. I have an incomplete copy so have been unable to share it. I think hermin1 is familiar with it as that was where the orphans list she spoke about was. the 1891 Elrod Roll was essentially a census of the Sissetons. to my understanding, when the payment was made to the sissetons, it was to include in one sum, the payment to the scouts. I dont know that there was a set amount for the scouts or that they were paid individually. I would need further proof that so far, I have been unable to find to prove that anything of the sort actually happened. according to history of the santee, there was much talk on payment to the scouts and drafts drawn but later extracted in amended acts passed. The 1891 is a fantastic sisseton roll as it is old enought to include the first generation of sisseton families and recent enough to include some of the elders parents we are more familiar with. It shows indian names and as Henry Campbell was the interpreter for it, the names are as spelled correctly and as accurate as I think one will ever see in a native census roll. The microfilm seemed to me to be very clear and more readable than others.
