I am interested in the information that is listed with Tateibobdu #9 under Iron Elk's band. #7 Oyeicasnamani under Yellow Medicine's band. Also have you found Wabasha's band list yet. I am looking for some people that are listed in his band in Minnesota.

Also how much would it cost to get a hard copy from you, or are you willing to share?

I have this census, and NARA included this page which does not have the Chief’s name above the list of individuals. I am assuming this is Wapasha's band, as it is the first page of the census they sent, and his band is listed first. Could you please check to see if this is the missing Wapashaw band? You are not a spoil sport!! That's why I asked. I was curious as to why there is no chief at the top of this group of folks like the rest of the groups. In the census pages NARA sent me, Wapasha is listed as a Chief, but there is no group of folks with his name atop. Unless NARA just omitted this page. The bands included in this census are-

Well I am glad to see the mention of this page, it has bugged me for years. I to thought it was the ones who went to Flandreau. but on the pages for each different band is listed BIG SIOUX, which I was told was Flandreau. There is another page on this Microfilm for 1869, The top of the page reads...

And I can not find wapashaw's band in this 1869 census. I thought i had it before. This is strange.
Well I thought it was strange to see a head man by the name of Owancaduta, I think maybe he is the head man in charge for Wapashaw at the time of this Census. ?

Hello Sara,
My copy only has 5 of the six bands, with Wapasha missing. I have emailed NARA in KC where I got this, and asked them to check and see if there is a page for him. Hope we can clear this up. I just hope this page isn't missing from their copies. You are correct- each chief has a listing of the folks in their band who went to BS. Curious indeed who the folks on the first page are! We shall see....

this census has some letters that are hard to read, so i maybe off on some of the spellings.....
m is for man, w is for woman g is for girl,b is for boy, if c.o ismeans crossed out on the census,the number iput next to b or g, means they r under that age, the age group is 15 to 10, 10 to 5, and 5 to birth, so if i put 15 next to the letter g or b , it means that the g or b was under that number soany child over 15 is counted as man or woman

Sara and all-
I have heard back from NARA and they assure me this is all there is to the 1869 census. They find no separate page for Wapasha's band. They also have no idea about the first page of folks with no chief listed. I am going to assume :-) that Wapasha's band was either overlooked at the time this census was taken, or was lost somewhere along the line.
I am also thinking the first page with the names starting with David Faribault is a separate census taken at Flandreau. I find a lot of these same names on the Chief's pages under their listing of folks who went to the Big Sioux.
This might explain why there isn't the same information on this page- no numbers of guns, horses, etc. and is on different sized paper.
Jackie, Big Eagle can be found in Iron Elk's band.

thanks to everyone for being so diligent and thanks for the reposting jackie, the most incredible part is the translation of names. Example Thomas Wakute as Tawahinkpe. I have wanted to know who this is as i came across a letter in record group 75 regarding a man named Tawahinkpe. I will dig it out and see if it is of interest.

On your post of Nov 11 you listed the census. In OWANCADUTA Band you have at #3 MARIPYAHDINAJIN. This is the name we have as the wife of PAZA (earlier he is always listed in Taopi band). She is the mother of Lucy (ORANOTAWIN) Carpenter, and her sister Emma WAHANKDITANINWIN) Tompkins who were at Crow Creek in the 1870's (according to superintendent's report).

Vicky's reply of Nov 19 said that MARIPYAHDINAJIN HAD 1-2-2=5?
My Question: Could this MARIPYAHDINAJIN be a woman? If her husband PAZA had died would/could she be a member of this band? and why is TAOPI listed in the first group?

I'm so lost. I have only been looking for Minnesota connections for Lorraine Isburg for a couple months. In my four years of research for her no indication was ever found until Vol. I of the Crow Creek Episcopal Baptism appeared that she had any connection to Minnesota. I've become very familiar with the history of Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Standing Rock, Cheyenne Eagle Butte, Rosebud and some of Yankton and the names and places were becomibng easier to recognize....but even though I read as fast as I can about Minnesota Sioux history I feel I am so ignorant. You can't gain a lot of knowledge in a couple months just enough to become frustrated. I envy you and the other people your vast knowledge. I've not found ANY information of MARPIYAHDINAJIN until she showed up at Crow Creek census of 1886 then she died in 1887 and PAZA is just a name that appears occasionally on a list or two as a member of TAOPI's band. On Lucy's probate he is listed as WICOSAYATAPI or KING. (First we knew him as PAZA-AMANI or PAZA was on the 1876 baptism of MARPIYAHDINAJIN as her husband and the father of Lucy and Emma. He had to have been born late 1700's but evidently was a very quiet person. I'm sure hoping that this MARPIYAHDINAJIN could be a woman and is the one I'm seeking.
