Judging from what I have learned and am starting to see here, maybe this thought can shed a little light. For those especially who may be starting to second guess yourselves as to wether you should go on or not. If in fact you cannot link to the two lists for whatever reason and you can trace you line back to the people in other ways, (here's the thought) maybe you/we simply discovered that we are on the wrong case! Maybe you/we should be on another kind of case. The two list's are not the only ways to benefit from this. If you are 'disqualified' it doesn't necessarily mean you don't qualify. We are learning, so 'don't' give up!!!
Keep in contact with each other!

thank you for those encouraging words redbrother. sometimes i feel like giving up but i know that is where my ancestors come from on my mother's side. she was orphaned when she was three years old and we never knew we came from mdewakanton/santee sioux. i am finally finding out where her ancestors were from. so god bless you for encouraging everybody.

I am also encouraged by your words. I am interested in hearing what you may be thinking of for those of us who don't make it on the 1886-89 lists. Keep us informed please. I will continue to search and share. Thank you very much, marnie

I will continue to search and share. Thank you very much, marnie I heard that some rejection letters were sent out. We're waiting to see what is coming in the way of information, if anyone is willing to share it. But again, if anyone shares it, don't give any specific, personal information out. One thing that I would like to know is 'does a rejection letter give a reason why the party is being rejected'! That could help a few people with maybe some key information, that could still help them get onto the list. It could help in they're search for more accurate information, which is one of the hardest things to come by. This site, Oyate, has been 'one' invaluable source, from what I understand.

Here is an email I received from a distant relative. After reading it, I contacted our family lawyer and our lawyer is going to represent this line too since they are very closely related. However, I wanted to share with you what was written to them so you have an idea what is on a rejection letter.
Jackie
*** has just been notified by letter that our family has NOT been certified. He received the letter in the mail. I haven't been personally notified yet, but I served as the family contact for our family. He was told that more proof would be needed to be certified and that we had only until June 23rd to possibly hire an attorney.

I agree with you 100% redbrother. We can prove beyond a resonable doubt that we have a descendent that was Mdewakanton they were the true "warriors" in my opinion.

Great Advise! We have been through two lawyers already and still haven't given up hope. Like redbrother said, there will always be another way. I know there are good Lawyers out there that know Federal Indian Law really well !! There will be another way!! So keep on keepin on!! I have family that came from Kaposia and went through the whole 1862 crisis and ended up traveling as an extended family group from Ft. Snelling to Crow Creek to Flandreau. Where they ended up building a life for themselves despite all the hardships. I am SOOOOOOO proud of them and I WONT give up. I get tears in my eyes when I think about it!!! God BLess You All in Your Search for your families History!! These are family sagas each and every one of them. They are History .......familial history that we shouldn't give up on. So as I said before Dont give up!! THank YOu Redbrother for the Encouraging words!!!!!!!

thats because it's the only legal Doc. they have to go by. we can't make-up our own and expect it to be worthy to stand up in any court

Here again I would point to the Mcleod census and his statement that not all on the census would be elidgeble to recieve benefits. Can anyone put that into the perspective of the census being the determining factor of benefits? It would seem to me he is saying that it was a census of who was there but not of who the beneficiaries are. Also how bout Lettow's statement in December about how it would appear that the censuses are a good presumptive starting point in determination but that there are some who are on the census that shouldnt be and some that are not that should be. I'm not making up anything. Just reading the stuff from MKLaw website. I think it would be impossible to ignore Judge Lettow.

For me this has been a journey that i was destined to make....I am very grateful for all of you, we probably would never have met and discovered our bloodlines together. this is far more rewarding then any monetary value. It is this rediscovery of our past that will help our children and grandchildren remember and understand who they come from. People now have their own family archival collections. Imagine this would have been impossible to achieve in a one year time frame. If I was to do this journey alone, I know it would take me 15 years to put together these documents and my family tree. Not only that I would not have know what became of my ancestors siblings and their families. So my words of encouragement, is be proud of who you are and keep looking because the reward to your treasure will last another 100 years maybe more.
your relative, wazi

Great Words !! Thank You !! I couldn't have said it any better !! Thats exactly the way I feel about this whole experience. I mean who wouldn't like to get some money, but rather than get dissappointed because we dont get certified we can be thankful that we have family legacies for our children and grandchildren to learn from. AHO!
