John W. Colombe and Sarah Prue,according to my records had 2 daughters and a son.No indication that any of them were adopted.
I would recommend you contact earth7w(she is one of our members). earth7w is the genealogist or the Rosebud tribe. she may be able to help you.

Select the Search the Site link on let side o page. type Thin Elk,Betty and in the search option select D. You will find under Burials t-TH: Betty A. 1940 US cenu for Mellette County South Dakota litss Betty thin elk at age 5 yrs with her father jess Thin Elk age 36, mother Cassie(or Carrie) Thin elk age 23 yrs. and Betty's sister Frances- age 1. All born S. Dakota.
