I am curious if anyone has been able to determine who Asa Lovejoy's parents were? I'm talking about the first Asa who homesteaded in Flandreau.

I haven't been able to find out who they were. You would have to see if any of the lovejoy descendents still living might have the information.

Shucks! I thought for sure someone would know. It's never that easy with genealogy, is it? We have family still living in Flandreau so guess I can start there! They're not Lovejoys but they might refer me to someone!

Hello all; I am also looking for more information about Asa Lovejoy "Wakaninihanku". According to the MHS.com, in the Alan Woolworth files, there is a biography about Owen Lovejoy, I believe this is one of his children. I was hoping maybe someone on this site has access to this document. I am a direct descendent of his from Flandreau, but have no information other than the family tree provided by P. Brill.
"Lovejoy, Owen, undated and 1934.
Born 1855. Includes biography. Lovejoy was a Dakota clergyman. "

Owen's mother , Mahpiwastewin was a sister to Samuel Stone of Santee.
Owen's wife, Hannah's parents were Wizun(Poor Bear) and hapan both dec'd.
owen and Hannah had Sarah,Rosa,Alfre G.( married George W. Dupuis),Nancy(she married a Wabashaw),Agnes,eugene, Steven,guy A.,jesse E., Cecelia B., Joseph, and Thomas(he was married 2x).

Does anyone know where Asa was born? Is he on any lists on this site? I've noticed several different spellings of his name? He is my ancestor along with Eliza. Now, about Tasinagiwin, I've seen somewhere that her mother is Julia "Sunna" Sky. Is she listed anywhere on this site?  |

julia Suinna Sky was the mother of both Mahpiyawastewin and Tasinagiwin,but with different spouses. Julia's parents were Chief Wakute, and his third wife.(paul Brill's Family History Chart on The Redwing descendents of chief Wakute).
Asa was born in what is now Minnesota

Can you post a link regarding Paul Brills family history chart that lists Julia Sky and her parents? I've tried searching but my sugar levels got low and I must take a break.  who are Chief Wakutes parents and his DOB? I've read of two different fathers. Julia was born in 1801-02. Who is Paul Brill? I'm sorry I'm such a novice. |

twilyums: there is no link to Paul Brill's chart.. I was told some years ago that he prepared the chart for decendents of Chief Wakute.
You will need to contact santee 1968 and ask if she would please send you a copy of it, and please make sure you indicate how you are related to Julia Sky.
From my research here is what I found re. Julia Sky and family:
Chief Wakute and his third wife Zitkadansakoyakewin had the following children:
John C. Redwing- husband of Julia Winona
children: Mark, Emma, and mose Redwing
Julia Sumnawin and unknown spoue
children: Hannah Sky/winona who married Owen Lovejoy
children: Joseph,thomas,Agnes(now dupuis),nancy
(now Wabashaw),Sarah (now Redwing)
Jesse, Cecelia, Rosa, and Guy Lovejoy.
Hepipazi
Ben Sky married twice:
First to Belle Kitto
Second to Zitkadansawin,Jane
children; emma sky, and mary Sky
henry sky/Hapstin
Hapadayedawin, Mary wed an Unknown.
Daughter : Jane Thompson
Fred Sky/Hake
William Sky/Tawapahota
My results were confirmed by one ofthe Redwing decendents whom I was helping with her family history updates.
why paul didn't include the other spouse of Julia Sumnawin aka Suina, I do not know. but ancestry has her as the motherof both mahpiwawastewin-wife of Asa Lovejoy, and her sister of whom you claim desendency.

I didn't find Santee1968, so I couldn't send a message. I've seen that most members haven't been logged in for awhile. Do you have any contact information on Mr. Brill? Who is Tasinagiwin's father, and what is her maiden name? Do you know what year Wakute was born? I really appreciate all your help and I know the mad rush to find all this info has passed but for some reason I just want to know my ancestors so that I can tell my children where they come from.

No one knows who Tasinagiwin's father was. her english name would be Her yellow blanket Woman.
Wakute was born before 1826 is all i have been able to find on him.
Try contacting another Redwing descendent: redwing@siouxlan.net or redwing @siouxlan.com
You will need to delineate for her, how you are related to-and from whom-of Wakute's children.
That was Santee1978 I wanted you to contact.I am so sorry for the error.

Wakute died at Santee Indian Agency on 3 August,1880.

I've sent Santee78 a message and am waiting. Julia's birth year is 1801, so Wakute must have been born in the 1700's.

His father Walking Buffalo died in 1829 according to Major Taliaferro's records.

This site claims Wakute was 60-ish in 1849. www.goodhuehistory.mus.mn.us/RWExcursionPartII.html . Now Ancestry had Julia being born in 1801, Wakute would have been about 10 years old at the time Julia was born. Where am I wrong? How old was he when he died in 1880? |

I got some info from Vicky . Chief Wakute died in 1880 at the age of 66, she states he was born in 1814. Julia was 13 years old at the time. Could she have been a sister or cousin. Is her father one of the other Chief Redwings?

The chief Redwing line runs like this:
Redwing I: died @1805.
Hi son Walking Buffalo(Redwing II)succeeded him. He was born @1759, and died 1829.
He was succeeded by his son Wacoute(I). Wacouta (I) or chie Redwing III,died 1858.
His son Wakute (II) or Chief Redwing IV died 3 August,1880 Santee,NE. No body knows where he is buried.

The two sister brides of Asa Lovejoy were the daughters of Julia Suinna Sky(not the daughter of chief Redwing and his third wife). the Julia Sumnwin that was Redwing's daughter, is acording to the Redwing decendents,the mother of Hannah Sky(winona), wife of Owen Lovejoy.
However, the heirship for Wizun(Poor Bear) and the 1902 Reg. of Santee Indin Families indicate that Hannah's parents were Wizun and Hapan both dec'd. Paul Brill did not know who Julia' Sumnawin's spouse was. which makes one wonder if Hapan,wife of Wizun, was Julia Sumnawin.Sumnawin also had a son Hepi Pazi who died without issue.this son is not mentioned in Wizun's heirship report,
There are 3 Julia Skys in my records, the one who was the mother of Asa Lovejoys's sister wives,the Julia Sumnawin mentioned by the Redwing Descendents, and the Julia Standing Soldier who married Ben Sky(son of Wakute and his third wife),Alex Redwing, and Dniel Gaham.
