Am researching the Eagle (Red Eagle) and Whitecap (Wapahaska) family history, as a personal project. Chief Whitecap left Minnesota after the Dakota War of 1862 via Fort Peck (?), and entered Canada with Little Standing Buffalo and was a member of Chief Sleepy Eye's tribe. There is indication that Chief Sleepy Eye married the eldest sister of Wapahaska, name unknown. Running Bear also travelled with Wapahaska to Canada. An 1886 Canadian Census shows that Running Bear, age 33, was part of Chief Whitecap's band along with Poor Dog, age 30; Little Crow, age 66, nephew to Chief Little Crow that was written on the census. In addition, Old Bear, age 30; Iron Buffalo, age 33., John Littlecrow, age 27, Running Blanket, age 40 plus Red Flag, age 58. Chief Whitecap would have been 67 in 1886. Have been on Ancestry.ca, FamilySearch.com and Canada's Vital Statistics websites. Research assistance and/or suggestion of any kind would be greatly appreciated. PS: Harold Red Eagle was half brother to Charles Eagle, my ggrandfather, (Charles married Mary Whitecap, daughter of Chief Whitecap).

Mr. Eagle: The Running Bear that you mention - Is that Matoinyanke , son of Itewakinyan, of the Tizaptanna band?
I have a copy of a water color painted in Canada of Wapahaska in 1874. Email me at Louis_Garcia@littlehoop.edu Louie
