Need help in trying to find lineal descendants. Here is the information I have from records:
My name is Debra Susan (Drew) Gittelson
Mother: Lois Lorraine (Armstrong) Drew 1/16 Sioux Born 7 October 1923 in Long Beach CA Died 2 May 2005 in Oxnard CA
Grandmother Alice Marie (Paul) Armstrong 1/8 Sioux Born 5 April 1898 in White Rock South Dakota Died 14 July 1956 Married to John Armstrong
Great Grandmother Emma (Cloutier) Paul 1/4 Sioux Born March 1868 in Minnesota Died 14 July 1956 I believe her father was George (Georges) Cloutier and mother was named Rosalie Martin Emma was married to a Mathias Paul.
Have a certificate of degree of Indian blood for all three. And in the additional data or remarks: Alice Paul Armstrong is enrolled as Number 53 on the 1940 Indian Census Roll of the Sisseton (Lake Traverse) Reservation and her date of birth as recorded on this record is 1898. This document is dated March 16, 1942.
I have information on the Rolls/Census but cannot seem to connect back any farther.
I appreciate any help with being to go back further. I just want to know who my family was. Thank you

I can understand your frustration. Unfortunately I don't know what to recommend. What you need to do is see if you can find the heirship papers for your grandma, and/or a death certificate that may provide some information. I am guessing that Cloutier is French. have you tried typeing in Metis Genealogy into Google?it is possible you may find th ecloutier surname and possibly some family trees. if she was born in Minnesota in 1868, surely she would show up on the 1870 Minnesota census. i jave an Emma cloutier in my records, born 1868, but born in Canada.

You are correct, Cloutier is french. The story my Mother told was that a French Canadian fur trapper married a Sioux woman. But when I try to go further back than Emma Cloutier Paul, my Great Grandmother, I run in to walls as to who was 1/2 Sioux blood. Seems they were in Canada, Minnesota and then South Dakota. I appreciate any and all help I can get. Thank you so much. ___________ Now we're getting somewhere. first go to www.census-finder.com and look for the 1849 and 1850 Minnesota Territorial censuses, and see if there are any Cloutiers mentioned there. As I mentioned before, also check out the 1860 and 1870 Minnesota Censuses at the above website, or ancestry if you have access to it. I have some records on French fur Traders and will see what i can find there. also go to google and type Metis History. You should see a web site that has the words telusplanet. this is a wonderful site. You will get bleary-eyed going through all the records here, but you may find some information helpful to you. Then try Pigs eye Noepad.com this is a kind of alphabetical listing of people involved in the history of St. paul,MN. Are you sure emma was born in Minnesota? ___________ george cloutier whom you say may be emma's father, was listed as a farmer in 1870 US Census for McCleod,Wensted,MN. so george's father would have to have been the fur trader who married the indian. but on the 1870 census just mentioned, both George and his spouse Rosalie are listed as White.

J B Cloutier is the only Cloutier on the 1849 Minn census, and list only his name. I have been working on Emma as I work on Pehanduta since they are in the same time frame, The Emma in Canada that fits the year died when she was four. Than another in La. Than I found her as an 18 year old listed as single. I have a little more but am trying to get a run before posting. ________ thanks for your input Ray. the emma I found living in Minnesota(at ancestry) was born in Canada and was married.she and husband immigrated to Minnesota in 1883. so there is more than one emma Cloutier.

I appreciate all the research you two are doing... I also posted 2 Land Patent Images showing athe 40 acres were granted to a George Cloutier in 1910 and an Ada Cloutier too. I run into a wall on the Cloutier family line in ancestry.com because they are pretty adamant that there is no Sioux in the Cloutier family! Anyway, I am still digging on my end too. Thank you so much for all this help. Debi Attachments:

debigtt: I searched through my fur traders files and , I found a John Baptiste Cloutier who was in the Minnesota territory and Michigan area back then. In 1816 he was working for Pierre Rochablave on the Grand River(don't know where that is), and in 1817 he worked for Ramsey Crooks at Fond DuLac. this may be your fur trader. Tell your family they may be full of beans. There is a Roger Cloutier at genealogy.com's genforum and ancestry.com's forum, who claims that all the Cloutiers in North America are of Mixed blood origin, and that they all come off of Zacharie Cloutier,a carpenter born in France, who came to Canada. One of his wives was a Menomonee named Mary(Marie)Josephte Manitoukoue(she was born@1757 Wisconsin), on Nov. 21,1780 at the Catholic church in Oka,Quebec. They had 7 children(3 before and 4 after the wed):Charles b. 1776, Francois b. 1777,Genevieve-Angelique b. 1779, Joseph-Benjamin(also went by Benjamin Cloutier). Hpe this helps. b.1781,Mary-Madeleine b. 1782, Josephte b.1785, and Julie b. 1799(may be mis- copy, more likely she was born 1789?). both Charles and Joseph-Benjamin came to Mackinac,MI in1828. here is a link to a biographic sketch of Zacharie cloutier. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zacharie_Cloutier
