Hi, I'm trying to fill in the blanks on Grandma Elsie Red Wing's tree and find I don't have that much on the Rev. Daniel Hemans her grandfather. He married Nancy, a sister of Martha Red Wing and she became a Pay Pay, but I don't have too much on him. I think he might've died early on. Any info will help greatly. Pilamaya, Wanbliho

Rev. Hemans died on 9-18-1878 at Santee (Iapi Oaye). He is also mentioned in the Santee Mission Register, Book 1. I think his baptism and death can be found there.

In looking further, I see that the Santee Mission Register Book 1, mentions Daniel Wright Hemans, the SON of Rev. Daniel and Nancy. How sad that the Rev. died in 1878 and 8 months later, his son (same name) is born. :-( Daniel's (Jr.) baptism is noted on page 152, on May 11, 1879. His confirmation was on Sept. 18, 1892, He was 14 YO. This can be found on page 320.

Vicky, Thank you so much! I might be able to fill in most of the blanks now! I find it very interesting that Nancy Hemans Pay Pay was a sister to Martha Red Wing and Eli Abraham. Grandma Elsie's mom was Jennie Thornton James. I have the cutest photo of her and her cousin ? Chapman who made the most beautiful cat applique blocks when she was nearly blind. She had lost everyone in her family to TB (I Think that what Genevieve said).

Do these records ever show who are the parents of Rev. Daniel Hemans? I have been looking, but nothing yet.

I'm afraid he won't be found unless you can discover his Indian name. I searched all the early Santee and MN censuses last night and his English name does not appear anywhere. Have you tried to get some probates from NARA? Or you might ask Barbara at the KC archives to do a search. That may be the only solution. :-(

Vicky,
I think I remember where I saw his name and wasn't looking for him at the time so now I will have to look for the Julia Minicasna Win probate. I think his mother was a daughter of one of the Inkpaduta/Maza Inape/?/?/ brothers. I think it might be Tate Ojanjan so I will have to go thru my things again. First I'll look here. Thanks for the help. I might be doing a hurry up trunk show on the Santee Quilts next week before they go to the museum. Wanbliho.

Wonderful! When the time comes, see if you can find out in which museum they will be housed. I would love to go see them!

Hi, Ok now that I have found almost everything I need on Daniel Sr., who are the parents of James Hemans aka Tamdoza? They don't seem to be listed on the 1902 register of families for Santee. Does anyone know who they are and was he related to Daniel Sr?

I don't know if this is the James you are looking for, but this listing appears in the Santee Mission Baptismal Ledger. James Hemans, his wife Louisa and one of their children. Let me know if this is the wrong James. He also had a son James baptized in Book 2. :-) img138.imageshack.us/img138/1346/jameshemansbaptf.jpg

Came across your post by accident, and thought I'd let you know (in case you hadn't already found it), that there is a wonderful archive of 50 or so letters from Rev. Daniel W. Hemans and his wife Nancy in the Gilder Lehrman Collection. You can look it up at: gilderlehrman.pastperfect-online.com/33267cgi/mweb.exe?request=advform . To locate all the items in the archive, enter "Hemans" in the "People" box. To look into the possibility of obtaining images of the letters, contact reference@gilderlehrman.org. It is a wonderful glimpse into their lives.
