I have been asked to fine family information on a Nelly(ie) Hines. According to the little knowledge out there, she was a Lakota Sioux woman, born on a reservation in the 1870s, 6 miles south of Mitchell, SD. If anyone knows anything at all about this woman or possibly her family, please contact me. This is all of the known information at this point. Thank you, Jackie

Hey Jackie! I've missed you! OK, leaving no stone unturned, I find no Nellie Hines in SD. I find no NA Hines family in SD except for Amanda Pasapa and John (a white dude) at Sisseton. They had 7 children, 6 still living in 1900. Amanda and children received allotments at Sisseton in 1887 but are crossed off the list. ?? They appear on the 1887 census and the Elrod roll where they also have a daughter named Minnie (who must be the 7th child who died). I wonder if Nellie was a nickname for one of these Hines girls? Maybe John Hines was married to a Native woman before he married Amanda c. 1873. In any case, there is no record of a Nellie, so it does not appear she was enrolled anywhere. I also checked records for Flandreau and Crow Creek and find nothing. Sorry I couldn't help. Here's the 1900 census page- img709.imageshack.us/img709/4729/1900hines.gif

Vicky, Yes, long time since I have been on. I am currently teaching at a Native American college, in the middle of getting my master's degree, working at a theatre in the afternoon, and raising 6 kids at home. I will be glad when any one of these processes are complete. In the meantime, I will try to get on whenever possible. Take care, Jackie
