I start by confessing my ignorance on these matters, but could use some help in understanding the way things were. We have been having a debate about two supposed sisters, both named Julia, both born about the same time claiming the same parents. One shows up on the 1885 Census of the Ponca Indians of the Dakotas (mother Amelia Rulo was Ponca). The other shows up in censuses at the Pine Ridge Reservation and claims to be Ogala Sioux. My understanding was that tribal affiliation was passed down from the mother and that Julia would be considered Ponca. Two separate complete families with many children. Is such a thing possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure these are 2 different people and not the same person? My great grandmother claimed enrollment at both Santee and Rosebud.

She would have been one super woman with a total of some 19 different children and two different husbands! I guess it's possible, but wow!
