I have been able to trace my relatives back to a Eugene (Caske) Hoffman and his wife Sarah (who I believe was originally Sarah Merrick or Myrick and goes by Saddie or Hapstin as well).
Can anyone help me climb the tree further than this? I know these relatives were born in MN but lived from 1885-on in Santee, NE. I also know I have a more distant MN grandmother named Mahpiyawastewin.
Thank you so much for your help I am helping my own grandmother Henrietta Trudeau trace her mother's line (Mary Hoffman Bennett 1903-1972).

Eugene Hoffman and Sarah Myrick married at Santee on Aug. 10, 1879 by W. W. Fowler ref: Santee Marriage Register
There is a great deal of info on this site regarding Nancy Myrick (Wapaha) nee Stone, and her family. Just do a search, type in Nancy Stone or Myrick and change your number of days to search to 1000 and change the number of results to 100.
hermin1 probably has info on Eugene's parents. It would appear they died in MN as I do not find them on the Santee death registers.

wow thank you so much - I started searching now that I have Nancy's name and I have already discovered so much. I am just really confused tho because i KNOW that Sarah Myrick is my great grandma's Mary Hoffman's mother yet Mary Hoffman born in 1903 is not listed anywhere! I think my grandma told me the 1903 Mary lived with her grandmother, but I don't know if that would be Eugene's parents or Nancy Wapaha.
My great aunt Eva Hoffman is listed in the family - I know she ended up having a cabin in Yankton before she died and I think she died single.
Does anyone know what Jesse James connection there might be? Lol I do not know if this story I have heard throughout the years is true or not but I think my grandma told me that Jesse James is a great great uncle....who had a child with one of Sarah Myrick's siblings?
This site is so awesome, much love to you who contribute, Mitakuye Oyasin you are bringing my grandma some happiness before she passes.

I am confused about your Mary Hoffman. Do you know where you found her birthyear as 1903? That's a 20 year difference from Eugene's Mary. I must be missing a generation here somewhere. ??

I went through Books 1 & 2 of the Santee Episcopal Mission registers line by line. I find the following- When the family entries were made in Book 1, in about 1887 we find- Eugena and Sarah have these children- Mary b. 1883 Enos b. 1886 Harry b. 1887 In the Baptisms section there are- Lawrence Garvie Hoffman baptized Oct. 20, 1901 Eva Lucy Bapt. Jan. 29, 1905 Taft Eugene bapt. Jan. 1, 1909.
In the Marriages section- Eugene m. Sarah in 1879 Eugene and Sarah's daughter Mary m. William Chapman on Oct. 18, 1901 (Book 1, p. 436.
Eugene and Sarah had no child born in 1903.

Eureka! Mary CHAPMAN married Henry Bennett. Check the Santee Mission registers on this site. The page is not copying clearly for me. Look at Book 2, p. 198
Henry J. Bennett age 29 m. Mary Alvena CHAPMAN on June 12, 1927. Henry's parents- Joseph A. and Rhoda E. Harrie Bennett Mary Chapman's parents- William Chapman and Mary (Hoffman) Chapman. (Mary the daughter of Eugene)
So not only were there a bunch of Mary Hoffmans, Mary Chapman also had a daughter named Mary. This is your Mary, born in 1903.
Whew, nap time!

I dont that many Mary Hoffmans, but I have 24 Cekpawins in my files.I also have at least 4-5 Mary Chapmans as well. eugene Hoffman's parents were Cetanhunka-dec'd, and Mary Tiakiskatewin-dec'd. Mary's mother was Jane(Ashdohewin) Hoffman-Primeau. Her fatyher is unknown, as Jane had several daughters with different men, but did not live with them as husband and wife. Jane's parents were Tatetawa and Kampeskanhewin. Tatetawa's parents were Waskechaska and Wamnuheduta or Dowanmani.(ref: Josephine Webster heirship Report, and John Kangimdoka heirshio Report).
Mary Tiakiskatewin was married also to Philip Webster and they had a daughter Anna Webster. Anna married isaac RedOwl. So Eugene had a half-sister.
Willie Chapman's parents were James Chapman & Mahpiyabezewin.James parents were Canpaahdewin and Caskeptecadan Chapman. (ref: Philip Webster Heirship Report). Willie and Mary had at least another daughter, Adelia Grace Chapman, who married a Medina and they had 3 children. Willie died @1902/03, and Mary died in 1908. Alvena was the older of the two daughters.

Sarah Myrick's father was John DeWitt. her bapsimal record just lists Nancy Myrick as her mother. Nancy had several children with Louis Jewett, but there is no record of any marriage with these men. her other husbands were Andrew Jackson Myrick(dec'd) Thomas Wakute, and lastly, John B. Wapaha. (Ref: Ellen Wakute Heirship report, and Nancy Myrick Heirship).

You are so truly amazing! I am so so happy to find this information, and so grateful to you for helping me with the family tree. I see now it would have taken me ages to find this on my own. I can't believe you actually sorted this all out for me. I feel like I am babbling right now, I am just so happy that all of this knowledge is not lost!!!
You are of course right about the Chapman name, I had forgotten that one, I was indeed a generation off. And my grandma's Aunt Eva was actually her MOTHER's aunt. When I am back in Sioux City next I am going to borrow our family album so I can share the pictures I have and try to put names with faces.
Pidamayaye! I am so grateful, let me know how I can help, with expenses for the site or otherwise.

PS = also I know some Medinas today and knew they were related but wasnt sure how. Now I also know why I thought Sarah was Mary Alvena's mom, because she raised her - prbly after her mom died. There is a story my mom told me today that the reason Mary Alvena cant be found on Indian Census in the Hoffman home was because Sarah would hide her when the agent came by - she didint want her granddaughter to be sent away for school.

Hello Gina, I think hermin1 and I had a grand time doing this tree! We are so happy you are pleased. The greastest gift you could give us in return is to share any photos and family stories you might have. We have so few pictures of our people, each one is truly a blessing. If you need help posting them here, let me know and I can help. God bless!
