War Eagle's parents: Was Good Thunder his Father??
There were many Redwings, and Shakopees and Little Crows, and Wabashas...so it stands to reason that there may have been other Goodthunders and or War Eagles...but no proof yet...
Andrew Goodthunder is not War Eagles Father (Although I have heard this from others-its just a guess till there is evidence)...I don't know who was War Eagles Father...But I do know that War Eagles grandchildren would not have married into their own family because they felt that it was their duty to keep the history of War Eagle alive (Alice Conger being his self proclaimed biographer(and sister of your Mrs. Bonin))...(as you know from your experience with Mrs Bonin, they felt it their duty to keep the tradition alive)...(Andrew)Goodthunders grandson was George (Goodthunder) Lawrence, and his Grandson Levi Lawrence Married Rachel Keeler (Daughter of Alice Conger-GGranddaughter of War Eagle)
Mother unknown??
Still Unknown--not sure where Mazakirawin comes into the story (supposedly war eagles wife-but nothing solid on it)
Was Goodthunder a brother of War Eagle?
Still Unknown-Possible but not Probable!
{ War Eagle's Indian name was either, Ruyanike/ Huyanike/ Huyana.
Yes
This is what the Yankton tribe called him. But he was from the Isanti Dakota tribe{meaning Santee or Mdewakanton}
Actually Isanti=Santee and Santee is composed of the Four eastern Dakota tribes--Mdewakanton, Wahpekute, Wahpeton, Sisseton,
He was adopted into the Yankton Sioux tribe and became Chief of the Yankton Sioux, he was known to be the last Yankton Sioux Chief to reside in the Iowa territory. {He was to be of the Sioux tribe in Wisconsin called Warpetourvan also Santee.
Warpetourvan is probably the Wahpeton or Wahpetonwan

War Eagle was given a silver medal by President of the United States, Martin Van Buren in 1837. His family still proudly displays this medal.
I was under the impression that he was buried with his medal...Who has it?...Where is it?...Who are you?...
Welcome to Oyate, My relative!

Welcome back Big Jon! Your knowledge was surely missed.
Regarding War Eagle with other siblings known. I did post on my tree information that I received from the War Eagle tree on this site under Family Trees, (and I have not looked at it yet today) where War Eagle had a brother by the name of Makagahomani Worldturner Birth: abt 1785 Minnesota Territory.
I have no documentation on this relative as I have no real docs on War Eagle just what has been written by historians. Any comments would be welcome.

Vogel (2005) Page 53 (War eagle)...Page 52 (Wakuta)books.google.com/books?id=xrYfektNvoQC&pg=PA53&lpg=PA53&dq=1837I believe the information on Wikipedia is wrong and Sioux City history page is wrong. Unless there was another Treaty of 1837 that I am unaware of, I challenge the validity of his signing it. I believe the reference to 1837 Treaty is mistaken research. (Which would be easy to do given the number of chiefs with the name Eagle or variations on it)...I'd like to be corrected if I am wrong.Treaty of 1836 (Yanktons and Santees):digital.library.okstate.edu/kappler/Vol2/treaties/oto0479.htmThe 1837 Treaty signed by A War Eagle-It wasn't for the Dakota It was for the Kiowa, Katakas, Tawakaros, Muscogees, and Osages. The War Eagle that signed that treaty is listed as Osage. Definitely not War Eagle from Yankton. Treaty of 1837 (with a War Eagle):digital.library.okstate.edu/KAPPLER/VOL2/treaties/kio0489.htmYankton Treaty of 1837 (no War Eagle):digital.library.okstate.edu/kappler/Vol2/treaties/yan0496.htmTreaty of 1825:digital.library.okstate.edu/KAPPLER/Vol2/treaties/sio0250.htmHere it lists a Wa-ma-de-tun-ka-Black dog. (could it be War Eagle?)...no way of knowing...actually probably Big Eagle (or one of his relatives)
White mans history is being pushed on us and we need to find our own history. This is but one example. BIG JON, War Eagle was given a silver medal by President of the United States, Martin Van Buren in 1837. His family still proudly displays this medal. I'd like to see this medal if one exists. I have spoken to many War Eagle Descendants over the years and have heard about a medal but have never seen it. These medals were given out by the government, but you did not have to go to Washington or sign a treaty to get one.By this time he had been elected chief of the tribe and been invited to travel to Washington D.C.with other tribal leaders from around the nation to negotiate peace treaties. Hmmm!War Eagle was a Santee Sioux before he was chief and then was adopted into the Yankton and then he became chief of the Yankton Sioux around 1830. The Yankton agent was in charge of the Santee Agency from April,1877 through June,1878. War Eagle died in 1851Headmen included Struck-by-the-Ree, Mad Bull, White Swan, War Eagle, Black Eagle, PrettyRock, Feather-in-his-ear {Feather Necklace}, Smutty Bear, Iron Bear, Medicine Cow, Jumping Thunder, The left Hand or Crazy Walker, and Walking Elk. Yes all these men went to Washington D.C. to sign a peace treaties but War Eagle did not sign on any treaties. Some of these men signed the treaty of 1858. I believe War Eagles son Doubleworth may have gone by the name War Eagle also This is a reference that I have. If you have any research on War Eagle that I don't have I would like to see it. I would like to see any new research.

Hello Jon and Jeff. My son, a fourth grader, chose to do his social studies project on War Eagle. This is trivia that may interest you. One of the articles we found stated that War Eagle was given a cane made out of wood from George Washington's Vermot home. When he died, he gave the cane to Theophile Brugier, who in turn donated it to the Academy of Science in Sioux City.(I am hoping this is the museum, since I have never heard of this place). There is also a Human Rights Commission which has established a human rights award.
The Commission initiated the War Eagle Human Rights Award, honoring the contribution of local citizens to human rights.
Jackie
ps. The Sioux City Wilbur Aalfs Public Library has many articles on War Eagle. If you ever come to town, you should stop and check it out.

I'm also looking for some information about the Silver or{Bronze} Peace medal that was given to War Eagle by President Martin Van Buren, in 1837. War Eagle very much prized this medal which is still in the possession of his descendents. This medal in the summer of 1922 was briught to Sioux City by his grand-daughter Julia Bruguier Conger.
Where is this medal now???

To anyone--
Chief War Eagle was not a Yankton;he was from the Mdewakanton or Santee Dakota but moved into the Yankton area near present-day Sioux City, Iowa, during the War of 1812.
{Did War Eagle have anything to do with the War in 1812?}
Then War Eagle was adopted by the Yankton people; and when head Chief Little Dish died {in the 1830's}, War Eagle was chosen as the {itanchan}, the new head chief of the Yankton.
{ Who was Chief Little Dish?}
And in 1856 the Yanktons underwent a change in leadership. Padaniapapi{Struck-by-the-Ree} became head chief. He replaced War Eagle {ca. 1785--1851}, the highly respected and popular leader.
{ So was Chief War Eagle still Chief of the Yankton Sioux between {1851 and 1856 ? until Padaniapapi {Struck-by-the-Ree} became head chief. And how long was Struck-by-the-Ree Chief ?}
Thanks jeffdm

jeffand BIG JON: there was indeed,another War Eagle,who was a chief.He is mentioned in Doane Robinson's History of The Dakota or Sioux Indians. Volume II of the South Dakota Historical Collections.1904. Almost all the Volumes, including Volume II, and also Volume IX,which you should download and print out, of this very valuable reference are on line now. just type in The South Dakota Historical CollectionsVolume II, into Google, and you should find the website that has almost olallofthe Volumes.I do have information on descendents of Doubleworth from one of Joshua worldturner's gr gr grandaughters. Joshua Worldturner was a descendent of Doubleworth if you are interested.

I've been trying to download some images from the book "Remember Your Relatives" but haven't had any success. I copied some info on a few people War Eagle, Struck by the Ree, Charles F. Picotte, White Medicine Cow that Stands, Little White Swan, John Bruguier, and the Yankton Scout List from 1864. If you would like a copy send me an email address and I will attempt to send them that way. Allie

Hi Allie, The best way to post images is to- 1. go to photobucket.com and open a free account. 2. upload your images to your photobucket album. 3. copy and paste the direct link to your message at Oyate. I find it easiest to have both windows open while doing this if I have a lot of images to do. The "upload an image" function on this site uses imageshack, which deletes all photos not viewed in a year. Photobucket keeps them on their site forever and you won't have photos disappearing. You can also copy and paste the thumbnail image from photobucket, which is nice for pictures, but the best image can be pulled up by using the direct link. Let me know if I can help further, Vicky
