Hau, at four my grandmother named me at the wounded knee memorial. She was taken off the battle field by a lakota man, she was only 2. from there she went to boarding school. She never knew her family name. The name she gave me was Pte Ceya Wakan Winyan, She told me that I would cry for all the wounded. Can you Translate the exact meaning of this name for me please. I was told that a basic translation is Sacred crying buffalo woman. Is this close? Thankyou Karen

I thankyou so much that is what she said that my name meant. but she said sacred crying bufflao woman. I do appiciate the translation. I have tried to research my lines but since she never knew her parents name and that the lakota family that picked her up never said any thing when she was taken away, we know not much. We did how ever find a shoe box that she left with my name on it. In it was 4 buttons silver hand pounded, and an eagle bone whisle with a note that said, this was my fathers, it is all I have. And a picture on metal of Bigfoots family after the massacre, with a woman with a child on her back, with a note that said My aunt and I. This is all I know. thanks Ceyawinyan

Ceyawinyan, I will see what i can find out for you. it will be a challenge, but I will do my best foryou. what you need to provide us with is some vital dates on your grandmother(DOB,DOD). where was she living when she died.it is obvious she was married. do you know the name of her aunt? this will help us too. Do you have an obituary for her?this may give us some clues for searching. I am wndering if her father might have been a blacksmith or silversmith for the tribe. I would suggest you log on to www.rootsweb.com and select the world connect Project. In the search Engine that will appear, type Big Foot in the surname, and chief in the given name. You should come upwith one or more trees about this famous Chief and his family. I am wondering is there any reference that might list the names of those massacred at wounded Knee?

Hi, I thankyou for helping me. As far as I know her name givin by the boarding school was Mary smith, and I know that she married a Cheyenne boy from the same school who had the last name of Hughes, I know that she was born around 1888, and that the things in the shoe box were taken from her parents when the lakota man took her off the battle field. Both parents were killed. I am sure the buttons were off her mothers clothing and the whilstle from around her fathers neck. I do know that she stayed with that family untill she was about 6 and then the white gov came in and took her to the school. I spent a year with her in a tipi when I was four as there was a death in the family and all were preparing a give away. she died in colorado at age of about 89. No family members are alive now, but my father was her youngest child, she remarried a man with last name Hines and he took this name. She married young about 15, I have seen the picture that she had on the internet. and all it says is Bigfoots family on it. I do not have that pic. I do not know where it went. I do have the eagle bone whistle, and the buttons. I know that my father told me that her father was a medicine man, and that she was some how related to bigfoots family. She was taught not to be indian at the school, but in her old age she stoped speaking english. At 4 she only spoke lakota to me. She named me in cereimony at the knee. and she said that I would cry for all of my relations and the wounded of the mother. I have put a picture of Bigfoots wife, who I think may have been the sister of her mother, side by side with mine. you should take a look. also my son looks very much like bigfoot himself. I have looked at the school, and there were so many Mary smiths lol. Thanks for helping me. Ceyawinyan

karen: send a copy of the photo to vicky and ask her to please post it. she has Photo bucket which is better than Image shack,
I need your father's first name, when and where he was born , if dead, where and when. do you know which boarding school she was sent to?she was not sent to the Hampton Institute, nor was this Huges fellow. so they had to have gone to a boarding school either in North , or south Dakota, or Nebraska.

I don't think this is the same man, Dawn. she is talkng about Chief Big Foot aka Spotted Tail. I don't know how many medicine men Big Foot had, but the one who was with his band when the massacre occurred was Yellow Bird. _________ correction: big Foot'saka spotted Elk. I apologize for the goof.

Karen, I would be happy to post the photo for you. My email is jandv@inebraska.com Or, go to photobucket.com. Open a free account. It's really easy. Upload the photo to your account and copy and paste the direct link here. The direct link will ensure the best quality image and will save space on the site. The quick loader here is no longer viewable by those of us with dial-up. We are also having problems with imageshack links going bad. I would strongly encourage everyone to try photobucket. It's free and very simple to use. :-)

Vicky, about the one pic of my son, It is the eyes that get to me. He has the same eyes, same intensity in his eyes that Bigfoot has. That pic gives me goose bumps everytime I see it. Thanks again for posting it.

I am posting a list of those slaughtered at Wounded Knee in a new thread in the "History" section so we can save this section for name translations. :-)
