Hi,
I am trying to find information on Wambdi Mani and his wife Winona.
Wambdi Mani was born in Minnesota in 1825. There are erroneous references to his birth in Dakota Territory at a later date. I have records that say he was born in 1825 in Minnesota. He signed the Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1868. He wife was a Winona. I have records that state she also was born in Minnesota in 1835. Minnesota did not keep birth records prior to 1835 and so far I can find no other information other than what is listed on the 1885 Census records for Standing Rock and further elaborated on by Brave Bull on the Standing Rock Tourism website. This man and woman were my great great grandparents and our family is trying to find out information about them. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Kelly and welcome to our website. First of all we have some Walking Eagles here that I suggest you contact. They could be relatives. Their e-mail is wambdimoni@hotmail.com. They are great people and have alot of information. Winona is a name that will be very hard to trace since it means first daughter. If you are able to find more on the other side it might help you when you get into probates. Do you know if this was an Indian Ceremony or church, jp, etc.? Most likely it was an Indian Ceremony since both were of Indian descent. We will see what can be done to help. Be prepared to share more info to help find more info.

kelly: Minnesota as a state did not exist back then. the first Territorial Census was done in 1849. Minnesota became a state in 1850.

Hi,
Yes, my mistake on referring to the then territory as a state. I appreciate any help that can be provided. I have genealogical information on all members of the family but these two individuals. We are from Standing Rock. Wambdi Mani is listed on the Standing Rock Census Rolls in 1885. There is no mention of his wife. On the records that I do have it mentions Winona as being born in 1835 in what is now Minnesota. This is all we have to go on. My desire is to try and figure out when they left Minnesota. I am almost certain there are no birth or marriage records. We have a letter from our grandfather that states that my grandmother's family was still in Minnesota from 1862-1867. The letter states that they were of the group that were willing to leave. From that point until Wambdi Mani is on the census rolls of 1885 there is little that I have been able to find. Wambdi Mani is a signer on the Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1868. He is in the well-known photograph taken on October 15, 1888 in Washington, D.C. He is listed as Lower Yanktonai by some accounts. He signed the treaty while in camp with the Sihasapa. The most extensive information I have been able to find on him is located on the Standing Rock Tourism website. I am looking for information on both individuals. Again, any help or further assistance is appreciated.

kelly: You might try the Dakota Territorial censuses. South Dakota did not become a state until after 1870. do you have names of any of their children with a birth and or death date? You canpossibly track back to themusing their children, at ancestry. You may akllso beableto trackthem back using their grandchildren. wambdi Mani translates to Walking Eagle. winona was the first born child.
