Today the name is spelled Longie.
Families are found with this surname at Turtle Mountain Chippewa rez, Spirit Lake (Devils Lake) and I think also at Ft. Peck, MT.
As I understand it there were three brothers, One disappeared, one with the Chippewa and one with the Dakota.
The name originally was L' Ange - Little Angel, some members at Spirit Lake changed their name to Langer (German for angel).
The reason Cavalier County, ND has the name is because there are Metis in that area today.
