SARA,BARB,MONA AND ALL,
I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH CLOE FROM THE CAN DO GROUP, IT SOUNDS LIKE THE NEW RECREATION/WAREHOUSE WILL BE DONE SOONER THAN THOUGHT.
THE DONATION SITE IS IN ACTION, FOR THE UTILITIES FUND.
IN THE MEANTIME RHONDA HAWK SAID, IT WOULD BE ALL RIGHT FOR ANY MATTRESSES THAT I CAN GET DONATED TO BE DELIVERED AT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB FOR THE MEAN TIME.
ANY COMPUTER HELP WILL NEED A GRANT TO BE PROCESSED, BEFORE THAT CAN HAPPEN. I PRESUME THAT WILL HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE FIRST OF THE YEAR, FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO HELP WITH SOME OF THE CALLS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I WILL BE WORKING ON THE MATTRESSES, NOTHING YET. AND I SUPPOSE DIFFERENT COMPUTER COMPANIES, BESIDES THE BILL AND LINDA GATES FOUNDATION. AS A GRANT NEEDS TO BE APPLIED FOR, I DO NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO HELP WITH THAT. UNLESS SOMEONE ELSE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THAT ON.
TRYING TO HELP,

TO ALL,
REGARDING CROW CREEK AREA.
I EMAILED CONGRESSWOMAN STEPHANIE HERSETH SANDLIN OF SOUTH DAKOTA, SHE ANSWERED BACK PROBABLY A FORM LETTER RESPONSE. BUT SHE THANKED ME FOR MY CONCERN AND INPUT. AS THIS ISSUE WOULD BE ADDRESSED IN CONGRESS. ANYONE THAT WOULD LIKE TO HELP PLEASE EMAIL THE CONGRESSWOMAN AS TO YOUR CONCERNS REGARDING THE CROW CREEK, FT. THOMPSON TRIBAL PEOPLE.
I TOLD HER I HAD SEEN A "YOU TUBE" VIDEO, STATING THE CROW CREEK PEOPLE BEING THE POORIST TRIBE IN THE U.S., AND I WAS OUTRAGED BY THE THIRD WORLD CONDITIONS OF THESE PEOPLE HAVING TO LIVE LIKE THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE. COULDN'T SOMETHING BE DONE TO HELP THEM. SUCH AS MAKING THEM ENERGY INDEPENDENT, WITH TURBINE WIND MACHINES. IF THE MACHINES COULD BE PLACED ON THE RESERVATION LAND PERHAPS THE TRIBE COULD EVEN SELL THE ENERGY TO LOCAL FARMERS. I CAN'T REMEMBER WORD FOR WORD. BUT IF WE AS A WHOLE SEND IN THESE EMAILS IT WILL ENABLE HER TO TAKE THESE EMAILS TO CONGRESS WITH AN OUTCRY FOR HELP FOR THE LAKOTA PEOPLE.
I AM STILL WORKING ON THE MATTRESSES, I HAVE CALLED SERTA ,SEALY, SIMMON, KING KOIL, ETC. THEY ALL SAY THE SAME THING THEY ARE LAYING OFF THEMSELVES AND CANNOT DONATE AT THIS TIME THE ONLY ONE THAT TOLD ME TO CALL BACK AFTER THE FIRST OF THE YEAR IS SELECT COMFORT MATTRESSES. IN THE MEAN TIME I CALLED THE SALVATION ARMY, FURN MISSION IN SIOUX FALLS THEY BOTH SAID THEY WERE IN NEED THEMSELVES. SO NOW I AM WORKING ON MOTEL/HOTEL'S IN THE AREA COMFORT KING ALREADY DONATED, HOLIDAY INN IN RAPID CITY SAID TO CALL BACK IN FEB. THEY WILL BE BUYING SOME NEW MATTRESSES AND I COULD POSSIBLY GET SOME DONATED AT THAT TIME. SO I WILL CALL BACK END OF JAN.
CAN-DO GROUP IS WORKING ON THE UTILITY BILLS FOR THE MOST NEEDY IN CROW CREEK AREA. I JUST GAVE THEM SOME NAMES FROM MONA, WHO NEED THE MOST HELP. AND PETER LENGKEEK GAVE THEM ANOTHER 10 NAMES, THEY ARE A SMALL ORGANIZATION SO CAN'T HELP ALL, ONLY THE MOST NEEDY. APPARENTLY THEY HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY DONATIONS SPECIFICALLY EAR MARKED FOR THE UTILITIES OF THE CROW CREEK TRIBE.
IF YOU CANNOT HELP FINANCIALLY, PLEASE EMAIL THE CONGRESSWOMAN ASKING FOR HELP FOR THEM.
AGAIN, WE ARE ALL RELATED,

TO INTERESTED PARTIES, AS YOU KNOW AFTER SEEING THE VIDEO THAT SARA POSTED ON OYATE, I HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR A BETTERMENT FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE CROW CREEK TRIBE. AND I FEEL I SHOULD PUT THIS OUT FOR ALL TO SEE, THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE TRIBAL COUNCIL ITSELF, PERHAPS ANY WITH COMPUTERS OR RELATIVES THAT LIVE AND VOTE BEST TAKE THIS INTO ACCOUNT AT THE NEXT ELECTION, THESE PEOPLE ARE VOTED INTO OFFICE, AND I BELIEVE THAT IS THIS NEXT APRIL.. I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT IS LOCATED HERE IN CALIFORNIA THAT WERE WILLING TO HELP WITH THE POVERTY AT THE CROW CREEK RESERVATIONS. TWO YEARS AGO THIS ORG. WAS WILLING TO BRING IN HEWLETT PACKARD WITH COMPUTERS AND TRAINING( FOR FUTURE JOBS) AND ALSO WAS WILLING TO BRING IN TRAINING FOR HOMELAND SECURITY WITH JOBS IN FUTURE, NOT TO MENTION WANTED TO BRING IN A FACTORY WITH JOBS RIGHT ON THE RESERVATION AREA. ALL THAT HAD TO BE DONE WAS THE TRIBAL COUNCIL TO GET TOGETHER AND I GUESS THAT MUST BE THE KEY WORD (GET TOGETHER) AND AGREE ON LETTING THIS ORGANIZATION HELP THEM. I'M NOT TOTALLY SURE WHY? ?? THE COUNCIL COULD NOT TAKE THE TIME, AND HAVE ALL MEMBERS AT LEAST A MAJORITY TO VOTE ON LETTING THIS ORG. HELP THEM, BECAUSE IF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE TWO YEARS AGO, THERE WOULD NOT BE AS MUCH POVERTY THAT THERE IS AT THIS TIME. I ALSO AM RUNNING INTO SOME OF THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE CONGRESSWOMAN'S OFFICE TRYING TO HELP THE CROW CREEK PEOPLE, SEEMS THE COUNCIL DOES NOT REALLY WANT TO HELP THEIR OWN TRIBAL PEOPLE. I AM POSTING THIS IN HOPES THAT SOMEONE WILL BE READING THIS AND MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN ON THE COUNCIL. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THIS ORGANIZATION'S HEAD, HE WILL GIVE THE TRIBE ANOTHER LOOK AT, WHAT HE CAN DO TO HELP THEM IF? ?? HE CAN GET A MAJORITY VOTE, BEFORE HE STARTS TRYING TO SEE WHAT HE CAN DO FOR THEM AT THIS TIME.. THE OPPORTUNITIES HE HAD FOR THEM CAME AND WENT, BUT HE PROMISED ME, HE WOULD GET ON IT RIGHT AWAY, BUT ONLY I STRESS THAT WORD ONLY IF THE TRIBAL COUNCIL GIVE HIM A MAJORITY OF THE VOTE TO GO AHEAD. THIS TIME BEFORE HE SPENDS TIME ON PROJECTS, THAT THEY DIDN'T VOTE ON LAST TIME. HE JUST TOOK THE DONATIONS HE HAD EAR MARKED FOR THE CROW CREEK PEOPLE, AND BUILT A VILLAGE IN AFRICA, WITH NO PROBLEMS. THOSE PEOPLE WERE GLAD TO GET THE HELP..... SO, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE A REASON TO SAY NO!!!!! TO HELPING THEMSELVES OUT OF THE POVERTY THEY FIND THEMSELVES IN. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME FEED BACK IF YOU ARE FROM THE CROW CREEK TRIBE, BECAUSE FRANKLY I FEEL LIKE GIVING UP. I ALSO FORGOT GENERAL ELECTRIC APPARENTLY IS ALSO LOOKING INTO A JOINT VENTURE WITH THE TRIBAL COUNCIL FOR THE TURBINE WIND MACHINES, APPARENTLY ON THE RESERVATION. WHAT IS THE HOLD UP THERE? P-L-E-A-S-E SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THERE IS A PROBLEM THERE. I JUST DO NOT GET IT. I ONLY HOPE THE TRIBAL COUNCIL WILL SEE THIS ON OYATE, AND REMEMBER THEY ARE ELECTED, AND DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THEIR PEOPLE. FRUSTRATED, DAWNDAY

Sounds like government , dawn day. do these members have anything to gain by turning their backs? do they have too much pride to accept a hand out orchestrated by some of their own relatives? this is sad there is no pride in poverty. we cannot keep letting our great nation deteriorate. Even the elders of old came to accept what was best for the health and well being of their people. Please this is the time for change..

Hey, I know how you feel. When I started tracing the birth mother of my sons mother, I decided to go to the rez and meet her family. In my research I noticed that Shannon was the poorest county in the USA and that Todd was the second poorest. Since I was going anyway I decided to bring a load of clothes and such. I mentioned it during a horse event at the arena and the whole town got behind it. I boxed clothes for 6 weeks and away I went. A 34 foot trailer full. 640 boxes. I took them to Tribal headquarters and than to a warehouse where I got to unload them, too. They said they would announe it on the radio and give them out in two days. I met a great aunt and took her there. When it started there was very few things left. The people that worked there and their friends had gotten first choice. That was not what I had hoped for. I wanted to help the poorest of the poor. Being the unsmart Cajun that I am I decided I could do better. The next year I took them to a great Aunt to pass out. She had a yard sale. Again , not what I wanted. By now I had spend enough time hunting and marking graves of the elders and meeting family, that when I took the next load, I left the trailer at the Motel. I would load the truck down and hunt my own poor people. I am telling you this so you will know that others face problems trying to help, too. Hope you feel better, Ray

Wow thats pretty hard core. but ya know you cant really blame one for trying to make a come up when their down. But the whole community should be more in tune with helping eachother out. this is how to make things better for everyone. But it seems to be instilled in the people or somthing?!! My grandmother hasn't been to the rez since she was a youngster and i can see some of these traits in her and her late sister. kinda weird i love my fam but can't agree with them all all the time? ;lol

AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE IS A PROGRAM FOR THE CHILDREN, BECAUSE THE CHILDREN IS WHERE THE FUTURE LIES FOR THE CROW CREEK TRIBAL PEOPLE. I ONLY HOPE THE TRIBAL COUNCIL WILL SEE THAT, NOT JUST THE HERE AND NOW. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR YOU AND YOURS, DAWNDAY

HERSETH SANDLIN ANNOUNCES $593,867 GRANT FOR TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION IN EDUCATION
Funding will Support Advanced Placement Coursework in 30 Rural and High-Poverty School Districts Across South Dakota
October 1, 2008-Today, Rep. Herseth Sandlin announced that Technology & Innovation in Education (TIE), administered by Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, is the recipient of a U.S. Department of Education Incentive Program Grant in the amount of $593,867. This grant will be used to expand opportunities for students in living in 30 rural and high-poverty districts in South to access and succeed in Advanced Placement coursework.
“With the technology that is available for distance learning, there are limitless opportunities for ambitious young people in South Dakota to excel,” Rep. Herseth Sandlin said. “This funding will help encourage greater student participation and enhance resources available to teachers who support their efforts.”
In collaboration with the South Dakota Department of Education, South Dakota Virtual School, and other partners, TIE will carry out this project to aid rural and high poverty schools in implementing plans to expand their Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings in English language arts, mathematics, and science. In addition to monetary incentives provided to students and teachers for above average performance on AP exams, the project will also provide extensive training and on-site coaching for teachers in grades 7 through 12 to support their implementation of an aligned, rigorous curriculum to prepare students for advanced coursework.

I have located the two graves I have been hunting. Dorothy Arconge Schmidt yellow Cloud-Provincial is buried next to Maggie {Ska} Yellow Cloud behind Grace Station in Soldier Creek, SD . I have also found that one of Dorothy's daughters is living in Wagner. She is over 80 and from what I hear is doing good. Now, I had her last name spelled wrong. It is Gullikson instead of Gulliason. As soon as I can contact her I have a picture of her mother and two of the children in 1936, plus lots more to share. Ain't life good?

ITS AFTER CHRISTMAS, BUT THIS MESSAGE SHOULD LAST ALL YEAR LONG. ITS A LONG STORY, BUT WORTH THE READ. This is what Christmas is all about... Better bundle up - the goose bumps will freeze you!! I think I need to read this every year at Christmas. Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those who squandered their means and then never had enough for the necessities. But for those who were genuinely in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I learned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving. It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn't been enough money to buy me the rifle that I'd wanted for Christmas. We did the chores early that night for some reason. I just figured Pa wanted a little extra time so we could read in the Bible.
After supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out in front of the fireplace and waited for Pa to get down the old Bible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn't in much of a mood to read Scriptures. But Pa didn't get the Bible, instead he bundled up again and went outside. I couldn't figure it out because we had already done all the chores. I didn't worry about it long though, I was too busy wallowing in self-pity. Soon Pa came back in. It was a cold clear night out and there was ice in his beard. "Come on, Matt," he said. "Bundle up good, it's cold out tonight." I was really upset then. Not only wasn't I getting the rifle for Christmas, now Pa was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We'd already done all the chores, and I couldn't think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this. But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one's feet when he'd told them to do something, so I got up and put my boots back on and got my cap, coat, and mittens. Ma gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I didn't know what.. Outside, I became even more dismayed. There in front of the house was the work team, already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do wasn't going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up this sled unless we were going to haul a big load. Pa was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I wasn't happy. When I was on, Pa pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. "I think we'll put on the high sideboards," he said. "Here, help me." The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high side boards on. After we had exchanged the sideboards, Pa went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood - the wood I'd spent all summer hauling down from the mountain, and then all Fall sawing into block and splitting. What was he doing? Finally I said something. "Pa," I asked, "what are you doing?" You been by the Widow Jensen's lately?" he asked. The Widow Jensen lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I'd been by, but so what? Yeah," I said, "Why?" "I rode by just today," Pa said. "Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They're out of wood, Matt." That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another armload of wood. I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, Pa called a halt to our loading, then we went to the smoke house and Pa took down a big ham and a side of bacon. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the sled and wait. When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand. "What's in the little sack?" I asked. Shoes, they're out of shoes. Little Jakey just had gunny sacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn't be Christmas without a little candy." We rode the two miles to Widow Jensen's pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. We didn't have much by worldly standards. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn't have any money, so why was Pa buying them shoes and candy? Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closer neighbors than us; it shouldn't have been our concern.
We came in from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible, then we took the meat and flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, "Who is it?" "Lucas Miles, Ma'am, and my son, Matt, could we come in for a bit?" Widow Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Widow Jensen fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp. "We brought you a few things, Ma'am," Pa said and set down the sack of flour. I put the meat on the table. Then Pa handed her the sack that had the shoes in it. She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children - sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at Pa like she wanted to say something, but it wouldn't come out. "We brought a load of wood too, Ma'am," Pa said. He turned to me and said, "Matt, go bring in enough to last awhile. Let's get that fire up to size and heat this place up." I wasn't the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and as much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too. In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks with so much gratitude in her heart that she couldn't speak. My heart swelled within me and a joy that I'd never known before, filled my soul. I had given at Christmas many times before, but never when it had made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people I soon had the fire blazing and everyone's spirits soared. The kids started giggling when Pa handed them each a piece of candy and Widow Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn't crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us. "God bless you," she said. "I know the Lord has sent you. The children and I have been praying that he would send one of his angels to spare us." In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in my eyes again. I'd never thought of Pa in those exact terms before, but after Widow Jensen mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than Pa had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for Ma and me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it. Pa insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errand for the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes.
Tears were running down Widow Jensen's face again when we stood up to leave. Pa took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clung to him and didn't want us to go. I could see that they missed their Pa, and I was glad that I still had mine. At the door Pa turned to Widow Jensen and said, "The Mrs. wanted me to invite you and the children over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of us can eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has to eat turkey for too many meals. We'll be by to get you about eleven. It'll be nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn't been little for quite a spell." I was the youngest. My two brothers and two sisters had all married and had moved away. Widow Jensen nodded and said, "Thank you, Brother Miles. I don't have to say, May the Lord bless you, I know for certain that He will." Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn't even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, Pa turned to me and said, "Matt, I want you to know something. Your ma and me have been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn't have quite enough. Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your ma and me were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and I started into town this morning to do just that, but on the way I saw little Jakey out scratching in the woodpile with his feet wrapped in those gunny sacks and I knew what I had to do. Son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand." I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad Pa had done it. Now the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. Pa had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on Widow Jensen's face and the radiant smiles of her three children.
For the rest of my life, whenever I saw any of the Jensens, or split a block of wood, I remembered, and remembering brought back that same joy I felt riding home beside Pa that night. In fact I am living one this Chirstmas. As some of you know I have been going crazy with this Dorothy Arcong Schmidt thing. Well this week of Christmas it has come together. Her daughter I was hunting as Lorraine Gulliason is Lorene Gullikson. I found her number today and called and talked to her. I went though what I have and send her pictures of a mom and a brother and sister she has never seen. She told me the brother Robert I was hunting was in Okla.I decided to try and contact him. There are 17 in the phone book and I was going to call them all. He was the first that answered. Both of them are excited to see what I have and I believe I am more excited than they. To be in your mid 80's and see a picture of the mother you never seen? It has to be a goose bump maker. I just wanted to share this because we all get disgusted sometimes. We have to keep on keepin on. They were both able to add to the missing years so now our story is about finished. Now if I can find the graves of Provincial and Come Stand.

TO INTERESTED PARTIES,
CROW CREEK STILL NEEDS HELP
THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF FT. THOMPSON, CROW CREEK RESERVATION IS IN NEED OF HELP WITH THEIR UTILITIES, AND PAYING FOR THEIR HELP TO KEEP IT OPEN FOR THE KIDS. THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY FUNDING THROUGH THE TRIBE. IF ANY CAN HELP CONTACT: RONDA HAWK AT 605-245-2410. SHE IS TRYING TO KEEP IT GOING BY HERSELF, WITHOUT ANY ASSISTANCE. I'VE ASKED ONE OF THE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, BUT HAVE RUN INTO PROBLEMS THEMSELVES. RONDA, TRIES TO EVEN FEED THE CHILDREN THAT ARE THERE, BECAUSE THAT MIGHT BE THEY'RE ONLY MEAL FOR THE DAY.
THANK YOU,
DAWNDAY
