Would anyone know anything about a Sampson James or possibly Jones. Might have been from Sisseton. I am guessing he would have been born late 1800's. I know this is vague but its all I got this hour. Thanks, Sara

According to a friend of mine, the name "Jones" was taken by a branch of the Rouillard family who got tired of having to spell it. Harold Jones was the Episcopal Sufragen Bishop for the Diocese of South Dakota back in the early 70's. wanderer

As for the James name in early Sisseton I only have- Jennie Hegina, wife of Sampson James. They had a child Jane Hegina who was the mother of Etta Taylor. Source- Max Renville's land ownership book. I have nothing for anyone named Jones on any early Sisseton documents. Also, the daughter of James (One Arm Jim) Itewayaka, Lilly, took the last name James while her brothers took the last name Greeley. Those are the only James folks I am aware of, although I do not have access to all the SW censuses. :-(

Federal censuses- 1910 Sampson is married to what looks like Ellen Redday. Maybe someone can snatch a better page off ancestry.com. This one is hard to read- In 1920, he is listed with wife Ella and son Enos- I don't know when he was married to Jennie Hegina, but all of these SD marriages will be on ancestry.com if they were married by ceremony.

Sampson was born c. 1864-66 in SD (Fed. census) He was baptized on 11-27-1887 @ Long Hollow (Iapi Oaye) He married Jane Follows on 1-8-1888 @ Long Hollow (Iapi Oaye) His 1910 census page with Ellen/Ella states this is the second marriage for both BUT I find: James Sampson married Susan Holymedicineroot on 7-27-1902 @ Long Hollow. (Iapi Oaye) AND he was married to Jennie? WHEW!

Well, Sara and Hermin, I think there might be yet ANOTHER wife. I find the following on the Elrod Roll, 1891- Sampson, James, age 28 Mary, wife, 18 Alice, dau, 1 This just seems so odd to me. Maybe this is really a man called James Sampson, or maybe this is an error and is Sara's Sampson James.

May I request assistance from anyone with access to ancestry.com pretty please? Please check later Sisseton Indian censuses (after 1891) and see if there are entries for both Sampson James and James Sampson. Thanks so much!

Is there a dude named James Sampson born about the same time? If not, can was assume that this name was a mistake on the Elrod (First and last names switched?) Thanks for the Indian name for Sampson James#2, as this is the one we are looking for. Please clarify this name- "Robertson finton" ?? Ellen disappears after 1913? BTW, there is also another Sampson James who was Choctaw in OK! :-)

Wow, I have a Fintan Robertson who received a SW land allotment in 1887, age 24, #419. This is the only place where I find this name. How did you find out this is the same dude Hermin?
Would you mind checking the marriage records at ancestry for any marriages for- Sampson James Fintan Robertson James Sampson
Thanks a bunch!
