Jon,
I studied my French-Canadian ancestors for many years. They were from Quebec since 1500s and I have copies of many parish records of births/marriages/deaths. They always used the maiden name of the mother/wife. If it was a birth record, there was the information for the child (name and date), then the names of father, with mother's maiden name. Then there were the four names of the grandparents. Each grandmother's name was listed as her maiden name. This made tracing ancestry in Quebec awesome! I am wondering, if these were Catholic records, or the person writing them catholic, perhaps they used the maiden name?
I know nothing personally on these people, but adding this as a possibility here.

Quote:
"In 1874 Daniel Westerman is born to H. Westerman and Louise Hanyetuwastewin (George Lawrence is half brother of Daniel Westerman-same mom)
In 1889 Mary Myrick and Rev. S.A. Hinman have a daughter: Mary Hinman
In 1892 Mary Hinman and Daniel Westerman have a son-Francis Westerman."
Big JON,
I noted a discrepancy concerning the ages of Mary Hinman and Daniel Westerman.
In 1892, Daniel would have been 18 years old and Mary would have been 3 years old, when Francis is born.
I encounted the much the same problem during my research: My Great-Great Grandmother is reported to have been born in 1843 and her dad reportedly born in 1833. I contend that she was born in 1846. Unfortunately, the Mdewakanton Department of Health and Human Services was not in operation at the time, so I am left with conjecture concerning the date and circumstances of her birth.
This is recorded: She and my Great-Grandmother were incarcerated in the Prison Camp at Fort Snelling. They survived the forced march to and the horrible living conditions at the Crow Creek Concentration Camp; the subsequent migration to Santee; and life on the Santee Sioux Reservation.
Respectfully,
MIKE

YES, THIS IS ALL FROM THE SANTEE FAMILY RECORDS...AND I SEE THE DISCREPANCY...I'M SURE SOME WESTERMANS ARE HAVING SOME DIFFICULTIES...MAYBE THEY CAN COME ON HERE AND PUT US STRAIGHT...
I DO NOTE THAT DANIEL WESTERMAN AND MARY HINMAN RETURNED TO MINNESOTA AND WERE IN BIRCH COOLEY IN 1889(WHERE MARY WESTERMAN IS BORN)...AND I THINK THEY ARE ON THE 1889 BIRCH COOLEY CENSUS
I'D SAY THIS IS A GUIDE AND OTHER DOCUMENTATION SHOULD BE FOUND BY THE FAMILY...I'D GUESS THAT IT IS CORRECT BUT FOR THE DATES...BECAUSE IT WAS WRITTEN BY S.A. HINMAN HIMSELF-(YOU'D THINK HE WOULD WANT TO GET IT RIGHT-IT'S HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER!!)
AND IF YOU ADD 10 YEARS TO MARY HINMAN'S AGE, SHE WOULD BE 13 YRS OLD(POSSIBLE)...(ASSUMING A 10 YEAR DISCREPANCY)...I REMEMBER RUNNING INTO THIS A WHILE BACK(I THINK THAT'S WHY I PUT IT ASIDE FOR NOW)
THANX MIKE...JON

MIKE & BIG JON,
I have noticed many times, in census records particularly, women use their maiden name initial, as their middle initial in marriage. But her Sioux name seems to have been 'Hapan' so may have been the 'H' as well.
1 JUL 1885 Santee Sioux Tribe, Santee Agency, NE 441/ Tawahinkpe Thomas Wakute father m 34 442/ Winyangiwin Nancy Wakute wife f 40 443/ Jannie Wakute dau f 9 444/ Ellen Wakute dau f 4 445/ Willie Wakute son m 1 446/ Hapan Mary Hinman step-dau f 29 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 13 NOV 1891 Birch Cooley Agency, Renville, MN 23/64 Mary Hinman (mixed) f widow 30 /65 Mary Hinman f dau 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 30 June 1891 Santee Sioux Tribe, Santee Agency, NE 855/ Daniel Westerman m man 23 ------------------------------------------------------------------- 30 June 1896 Santee Sioux Tribe, Santee Agency, NE 842/ Daniel Westerman m father 28 843/ Mary H. Westerman f wife 40 844/ Mary Hinman f step-dau 7 845/ Francis Westerman m son 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------- 30 June 1898 Santee Sioux Tribe, Santee Agency, NE 870/ Daniel Westerman m 30 871/ Mary H. Westerman f wife 42 872/ Mary Hinman f step-dau 9 873/ Francis Westerman m son 6 874/ George Westerman m son 2 875/ Westerman m son 4/12 ------------------------------------------------------------------- 30 June 1899 Santee Sioux Tribe, Santee Agency, NE 933/ Daniel Westerman m 31 --space here-- 934/ Mary H. Westerman f wife 43 935/ Mary Hinman f dau 10 936/ Francis Westerman m son 7 937/ George Westerman m son 3 938/ Paul Westerman m son 1
Mary died in 1958, but must have left Daniel, as he is listed in many censuses as a single man. I did not copy them all, as there was one taken nearly every year. in 1931 he was 63, living alone at the Yankton Agency. Francis 39, George 36, and William H. 29 are also on the page, each living alone and 1/4 Sioux blood. I do not know why there was a space between Daniel and Mary H. in the latter censuses, but they were listed as such after the 1899.
Sometimes you can follow a person through these census reports, only using a first name, like Lulu, when it is an unusual one, plus the agency. I am wondering if your Lulu Brass was born Lulu Hillers to Reuben and Julia Hillers. If you follow the name Lulu she is in the home of Reuben Hiller in 1888, and then disappears from that household and a Lulu H. Feather in 1889 and 1890, is wife to Louis Feather. Lulu H. Feather has no husband in 1891, and is listed alone: Lulu H. Feather f woman 20. She is alone in 1892, 1893.
In 1896 a Lulu F. (as in Feather?) Brass age 25, is wife to Willie 'Nagiwangagmani' Brass age 20 appears, no more Lulu H. Feather. There is 'Suana' Maggie Brass age 58 and her daughter Mabel Brass age 6, next door. Lulu and Willie are together in 1897.
In 1898 Lulu F. Hillers appears and no more Lulu Brass: BUT 902/ Nagiwangagmani Willie Brass m 22 -space- 903/ Lulu F. Hillers f 27 -space- 904/ Snana Maggie Brass f 60 905/ Mabel Brass f dau 8
In 1899: 399/ Lulu P. Hillers f 28 (lives alone, no Brass family nearby) In 1900: 414/ Lulu P. Hillers f 29 (lives alone) also in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 (at which time she lives two doors away from Reuben Hillers and his second wife Mary) In 1905: 417/ Reuebn Hillers m husband 53 418/ Mary Hillers f wife 59 -space- 419/ Lulu Hillers f mother 34 420/ Gracie J. Hillers f dau 1 -space- Rebecca L. Hillers f 21 In 1906, 1907 Lulu and Gracie still together. Gracie died after that, as in 1909 Lulu is alone.
30 Jun 1909 Santee Agency, Knox, Ne, Usa 434/ Reuben Hillers husb 57 m 435/ Mary Hillers wife 63 f -space- 436/ Lulu Hillers 38 f -space- 437/ Lavalia E. Hillers 3 f -space- 438/ Mary Hinman 20 f
1909-1926 Lulu Hillers disappears and a Lulu H. SMITH is listed, same age as Lulu Hiller, lives alone, household 919 and thereabouts.
As for John Jewett: 30 Jun 1897 Cheyenne River Agency, Sd 964/ Louis Jewett m 52 965/ Mary Jewett f wife 45 966/ Charles Jewett m son 18 967/ George Jewett m son 8 968/ Joseph Jewett m son 4 969/ Red Owl f m-law 80 -space- 970/ John Jewett m 25 (He is alone 1898, 1899, 1900, next door to Louis and his new wife)
Then (still next door to Lewis) 30 Jun 1901 Cheyenne River Agency, Sd 934/ John Jewett m husb 29 935/ Annie Gray Spotted f wife 21 ------------------------------------------------- 30 Jun 1902 Cheyenne River Agency, Sd 939/ John Jewett m husb 30 940/ Annie Gray Spotted f wife 22 941/ Frank Jewett m son 1 ------------------------------------------------- 1907 census says Louis died 24 Jan 1907. John and his wife Annie Gray Spotted now have children Frank 6, Maggie 3, and Alex born Dec 21, 1906.
Maybe this makes sense, maybe it doesn't, maybe it will belong to someone out there.

Where did you get that Daniel Westerman and George Lawrence were 1/2 brothers?
From ancestry.com a patron lists Daniel Westerman's parents as: Henry Westerman and Louisa/ Susan 'Hapaduzidan' 'Hauyeleinthwin'
Your wife of Lorenzo Lawrence was Louise 'Hanyetuwastewin'

Jimmy! Can you dig up a licence for this marriage-

Hello everyone
I remember reading that when Rev. Hinman was removed from Santee and sent back to Minnesota he marrried a women named Mary and had a daughter named Mary. so this might be why the dates on Mary Hinman differ. Just a thought. Andrew Goodthunder made complaints of Rev Hinman and his wife Snana Or Maggie Brass she had other names too. I started looking through the register of Santee 1902 and the names really started to get confusing but next Maggie Fraziers start poping up so many with different ages. But George Goodthunder Lawerence and Daniel Westerman were half brothers there mother was Hanyetuwastewin she was married to Lorenzo Lawerence. Hanyetuwastewin parents were Andrew GoodThunder and Tawicin. They had three children Alfred Goodthunder, Hanyetuwastewin and Hapastin who died young with out issues. So Andrew Goodthunder was grandfather to George G. Lawerence Daniel Westerman. I belive that Hanyetuwastewin was the wife of little crows brother that Lorenzo lawerence killed and married his widow but George G Lawerence is listed as age 40 years resides Know county Neb and Daniel Westerman as living age 35 residing in Redwood Falls Minn on Tawicin papers at Central Nebraska dated 1902 Then on the 1902 Santee Family Register Hanyetuwastewin is listed as Maggie Bill allotment issued under Maggie Frazier age 43. this would mean she was born about 1859 . Did Hanyetuwastewin have a Jr.or daughter with the name Hanyetuwastewin ?? See how confusing. Ok hope this helps someone.

“In 1884, (Samuel Dutton Hinman) was married at Springfield, Dakota Territory, by the Rev. Chas. Secombe, to Mary Myrick, daughter of Andrew Myrick, a friend who was killed by the Indians in the massacre of 1862 at the lower Sioux Agency.”
