Deloria descendents

I have been researching my genealogy and have discovered that we are connected to the Deloria Family. Im just anxious to post this, hoping for some feedback here.

My grandmother Lucille Ida Young, born November 2, 1918 at Marty, SD, 4/4 Yankton Sioux. Her Yankton Sioux number is #3121, she had blue eyes, her parents are Sam Young, DOB: 1899, 4/4 Yankton Sioux and DOD: March 29, 1935, place of birth unknown, Yankton Sioux number #3119 and Mary Jane Hero, DOB: 1894 her DOD: Sept. 12, 1924, also 4/4 Yankton Sioux, her Yankton Sioux #1312, place of birth unknown. They were married in 1914, place unknown. Sam Young's, parents John Brigham Young, his Indian name is O(k) or (d)e wicaki meaning "Look for" and the wicaki "asking someone to search for or look. DOB: 1878 and DOD: April 1913, place unknown, his Yankton Sioux number #723, his wife whom he married in 1891, Mary Lousia Mato, DOB: May 1870, DOD: Aug. 4, 1916, also 4/4 Yankton Sioux, her Yankton Sioux number # 1381, her Indian name is "Hetanwakoyewin" meaning (unknown), she also had 3 brothers, John, Thomas and Jesse Mato also one step brother from her mother his name is John Brown, his father was a white man, his children: Silly Brown born 1890, Anthony Brown, born 1896 and died 1899 and Thomas Brown born 1899.
James Thompson from Eli Mato or Anna Deloria, actually Im not sure on this one, but if he was from Eli Mato he would have his last name, so Im puzzled here, but his wife is Lousia Winter and their children: Angelique, Elizabeth, Oliver, Robert and Stephen Thompson.
Mary Lousia Mato's parents were Eli Mato and Anna Deloria Mato. Mary Lousia had one sister that I know of Anna Rumney Deloria, she may have more, whom married a Bruguier, the War Eagle Family. No records of Eli Mato at Yankton, actually been meaning to look in Standing Rock, but have not been able to get up there. I called and they did say they have a Mato, but that I would have to come and look. I do know that "Mato" means bear, Eli Mato died in 1899, his wife Anna Deloria was born May 1845 and she died 1900. Anna Delora's parents are Chief Saswe and Mary "Blackfoot Woman" "Si ha sapa win".


Anna Delora Mato's sibblings are Alice, Sara, Philip, Carrie and Euphrasia.

Mary Lousia Mato had also married Charles Wells, Jeffery Scisson, Edward Chamberlain. Mary Lousia had one child from Jeffery Scisson, Emma Scisson, she married Eli Brockway. Mary Lousia's marriage to Edward Chamberlain, she had another daughter Ceceila Chamberlain, further more from her marriage to John Brigham Young, she had Amos, Alfred, Grace, Joseph, Lucy, Olive, Thomas, Sam, Milton Philip, Edna Young. No children from Charles Wells that I can find.

Re: Standing Rock Census lists
If you can make it to Bismarck (60 miles north of Fort Yates) they have census lists of the Standing Rock Reservation at the ND State Historical Society. The newspaper files also covered obituaries on the reservation so if you have a DOD it could be a research source. There is also an LDS Family Center in Bismarck that has information that you would find useful. They offer free access to databases that normally ask for payment. vmarier

Mato Family

Eli (Anulpa) Mato b. 1842 d. 1899 in Yankton. Married... (on May 6,
1894)

Anna (Tunkanicagewin) Deloria b. 1848 d. 1900

They had the following children:

Mary (Hetonwakiyewin) b. 1869
Louisa b. 1870 d. 1916 (Married John Brigham (Okdewicaki) Young
Annie Rumney b. 1872 (Married Joseph Brugier Jr in 1894)
Thomas b. 1877 d. 1893
John b. 1880 d. 1924
Jesse b 1891 d. 1892 at less than one year of age.

Almost all the records on the Mato family (it seems like) would be with
Yankton. Eli Mato died at the Yankton agency (according to our records)
. Anna died at Greenwood. The exception to this is Mary Mato, who had
one child (at least): Emma, b. Nov 28, 1897 at Oak Creek, Standing
Rock.

Don't have much on the Young family, but here's what I have:

And so then Vine Victor was my grandfather...

Annie Rumney Mato married John Eugene Bruguier who was born 1872 in Iowa.

Together, they bore 5 children; Rufus, Helen, Oliver, Caroline and Sonny. John Eugene Bruguier was the son of Eugene Andrew Bruguier born 1848 at Dakota Territory. The father of Eugene Andrew Bruguier was Theophile Bruguier who married 2 of Wambdi Okicize, Chief War Eagle daughters.

Hello to all, hope you all have a great day.

The Mato Ite Wakan that is referenced here is probably John Holy Face Bear or John Bear. John Bear had married the two granddaughters of Red Iron, Annie and Mary Marlow. However there is another John Bear and he was a Kampeska so I usually double check to be sure as to who is who when dealing with the Bear name on the Sisseton Rez.

NEED HELP CONNECTING TO THE DELORIA FAMILY WITH THE LAMBERT FAMILY,


Yankton 1895 census to find Hopkins and of course they are there on the second from the bottom line, second record in. The problem with these records is there isn't a way to link the extended family members. Theresa is 45 and Phillip Deloria is 43 in the same census but her name was Lambert. Her mother could have been Phillip's older sister I guess since Saswe (Francois Deloria) had several wives, all of whom he had to "give up" except for one. That was the church policy backed by the U.S. military.

The excerpt says that Sully married Saswe's daughter but that would have meant that Phillip, Tipi Sapa, married his sister, Mary, and that wouldn't have happened. Mary's mother was a Sans Arc but I don't know her name or family.

Anyway, Grandma Effie and Ella Deloria were cousins and we always maintained close ties with Vine Sr, Ella and Susie through Effie. At the end of her life she would want to go to Pierre to see Vine often and Ella came to see her.

I edited a book that Ella wrote that is the companion anthropology text book to her novel "Waterlily." It's been out for about a year and is carried by Barnes and Nobel bookstores. That one is "The Dakota Way of Life" by Ella Deloria.
